I was thinking, If we continue to have problems with this ESC and gearing down is the only option to keep it from overheating I wonder if we can pressure HPI into sending people the option spur and pinion for free? They should have to fix the problem right?

I was bored, So I put my Firestorm beside my XS and hooked up the motor from the xs to the mamba in my storm and ran it on a stand for 5 minutes with the throttle trim turned up. Kinda like a slow break in, Anyhow seemed to work well maybe a little noisy.

I set mine up today and had a good chance to see the truck apart.It has my spektrum receiver, castle mamba max pro and SCT 3800 motor (not the SCT mmax pro combo) and a HS-5685MG high torque and high voltage servo. No changes to the chassis. The battery is charging. Its a thunderpower 4300 65/130C hard case and it fits perfectly.
I had to remove the motor because it had one of the motor mount bolts put in on an angle which messed up the threads in the endbell. The motor was holding from one bolt and had a loose pinion with no loctite. The SCT motor was put in since I plan on sending the original motor back to HPI.
I think its a solid truck and like the general look and construction of it. I feel it is terribly overgeared. I am verifying the gearing and will put it in a calculator. I think the larger spur gear and the shorter end of the gearing chart is a must on 3s. From what I know of this motor and ESC combo in 2wd short course and stadium trucks, this truck will likely make it run hot. I will take temperatures when its driven. Its only about 40F here though.
Negatives are the motor plate setup having fixed holes and lack of camber adjustment and the optional spur gear (or any optional or standard parts) is available. Its a bit more work than normal to get at the motor and pinion but acceptable.
I'm going to look into turnbuckles for it and get at adjustments.
It looks great on 2s and its probably the right battery for it but I want to go 3s and access slightly higher speeds. I agree with red to set it up to 40-45 mph, have fun with it and let it run cool.

I ran 3 packs of 3s through mine back to back, I saw temps of 130* on the esc 150* on the motor, this is with the body on. I ran one pack of 2s, 110* on the esc and motor. But man is it weak sauce now going back to 2s. I also set my esc up with 40% punch control, timing on low, so it really is better suited for 3s now. Also note its 75* out side today.

Boredom struck today and pulled the tranny out to try and install a 26 tooth pinion. All went well after I found where to modify the stock plate, top right hole opened up
here it is installed, just a little work with a dremel was all I needed and enough space was left to allow proper mesh

Thanks used photobucket and updated my previous post.
Sure wish I had a 24 tooth to try out but the 26 will do for now, all I need is a clear day to try her out but we are expecting rain through tuesday
I did make a template of the plate and will probably make a new one with a slot so I can experiment with different pinions

What size is the shaft on this motor? Still waiting on my XS but I want to order some pinions to have them onhand to experiment. I know it's a 48P but not sure about the shaft size.

Thanks foxy. I didn't want any problems from the start and figured I was going to set it up that way in the long run so why not do it right away. Its been raining so I havn't had a chance to drive it yet.
Red - have you considered swapping your FS and savage XS ESCs? It seems that you have the one for heavier loads on the lighter truck.

The only thing I am not fond of is how the wires on the motor went. For some reason I couldn't align the motor like the factory one that puts the wires out on the top. The first mod I will get is the slotted motor plate. I want the wires up. If temps are good I will keep the SCT motor in it and sell the stock electronics.

There isn't that I know of. I thought it was close to the SCT 3800 but they are different length cans.

Sorry, that was meant for Peloche who was looking for an equivalent 4000kv vektor in castle. I don't know of any waterproof ESCs besides the velineon system from traxxas.
