Ron I agree! My father and uncle were both there, my dad flew control-line at that time but my uncle Jerry (Worth) was flying pattern. I started flying R/C one year later in '73

Thanks for posting the video. It was really great to see Kirkland's Mustang X flying. I bought the plans when they were published in 71-73 and intended to build one. Somewhere in a move the plans were lost and a couple or three of years ago I got another set and finally built the plane. I've flown it in a couple of Classic events including Rusty's Classic TOC in Chicago this year.

Great video and very neat shot of Jim taking off and the gear retracting. In 72 was there anyone else not flying retracts besides Phil?

Ralph was flaying his Fliteglass Gladiator design in the early 70s but I don’t recognize what he is flying in the video.

Ray, did the Warlock have a landing gear arrangement like a B-52 bomber? A nose gear, a main gear, and two wing tip gears?

Phil was a holdout when it came to tapered wings too. Initially, he didn't think they were worth the added building complexity.

Yep, Warlock had tandem gear. I have a Warlord, nice looking in the air, but not the best pattern competition model. Fuselage is a bit narrow for good KE, the swept rudder has 'other effects' but the thing rolls really well and has a wide speed range. Wins on looks, but Superstar and Atlas are much better for competition.

Anybody have any idea where I might find the maneuvers flown at the Nats and the World Championships?  I fly SPA so I'm mostly curious as to what they flew in the middle 70's.  I've seen lists of the champions somewhere, just not the patterns they flew.

The 1959-1975 AMA Rule Books are available through a link on the SPA home page (www.seniorpattern.com). It is about half way down, just after the link to the First SPA Contest. The FAI sequences are also shown in addition to all the AMA classes.

Jim Wilmont is the designer/pilot. He lived in the Denver area at the time, I flew with Jim quite a bit. He was a very good pilot and really enjoyed doing the 'unusual' with his planes. The tandem gear design had it's advantages (weight) and disadvantages (ground handling). The Warlord and Warlock were very small fuselages to reduce drag and increase speed tho at the time neither seemed much faster than anything else in the air. Denver is at 5200+ feel in elevation so everything was pretty fast, needed to be to stay in the air!!!

Hey Chris,
I remember Jerry W. for his fantastic airframe finishes, in particular the Mach1 he was flying in the mid seventies; do you recall that one? It was beautifully painted, looked like glass. He was a very capable competitor as I recall too, certainly didn't know he was your uncle.
