Default Savage Set Up for Racing? Reducing Body Roll?

Hello everyone, I am trying to set up my Savage Flux HP for racing and I wanted some tips? I have RPM arms so I cannot use the HPI sway bars. I have 9000mAh batteries so I use 9lb springs on the back to make up for the extra weight. Whenever I even touch the throttle, the truck immediately back flips or goes on its top and the second I touch the steering, its flips over because of body roll. Any suggetions?

Upon suspension conversion kit. It greatly improves the handling and steering response.

Upon? Did you mean the HPI suspension kit?

Yes. The auto correct on my phone must have messed up my post.

The HPI suspension kit is a nice kit. It really does improved the handling. It lowers the roll center, and adds more caster to the front end. This allows the tires to lean when you turn but they stay upright when going straight.

I took all the clips out to lower the truck but it needs that extra step. I will give that suspension set up a try in the coming weeks. Thanks for the help!

if your running on asphalt, put your clips back in and pull the truck down with tiestraps. the handling is amazing. i pulled my flux down so the skid plate was abouthalf an inch off the ground, proline road rage tires. lots of fun, infact i was able to actually get the truck to top speed!!!. As far as the truck flipping on its lid, well theres nothing you can do about that aside from running weak batteries or the traxxas wheelie bar, that will keep a flux planted

Pull it down with tiestraps? Can you take a picture and show me what you mean? I have an idea of what you mean but if you could kindly take a picture, I would appreciate it.

Yeah, I was looking at those Road Rages and I think that is the best option for the truck. I wish I could throw them on some dish wheels but the desparado 40 series would do just fine. I was going to buy the Traxxas dish wheels with the Traxxas road rage tires, but the Traxxas 17mm hex hub is different than others because it has those spiky things.

Also, you mentioned the Traxxas wheelie bar which I would love to put on the flux since the current wheelie bar does not help with high speed launches at all. Have you figured out a good way to mount that wheelie bar on? Do you have a picture of that?

You make a suspension travel limting strap by using zip ties.

if you shorten the shock length with tie straps or even fule tube in the shocks it makes the savage all stiff. it wont traction roll anymore but the handling will be appalling. what you need to do is buy some truggy shocks, these lower the truck while keeping it soft-ish. they will allow you to tune the shocks way better too, and because it isnt so stiff it wont wheelie as much. i tied a full on truggy conversion on my wheely monster ss4.6 savage, the results were unrivalled.

with proper tires, the handling is anything but appalling. as a general rule of thumb suspention wise for off road you want softer springs, longer travel and lighter damping (rebound and compression). for onroad its generally the opposite with firm springs combined with a shorter travel and firmer damping. this is just a generalization, but you get the idea. a flux pulled down with tiestraps, handles like a gokart, with proper tires it corners so hard it almost looks funny. the trick it to get a nice low ride height, with firm suspention but not to firm or you will lose the ass end while cornering hard, a wee bit of body roll is a good thing, but just a little. i am at work but will post pics of the flux and the wheelie bar when i get home. there was a thread on a wheelie bar, try search func.- cheers i would put money on my flux walking circles around your xss djyjrlz....especially with those shoes she's wearin!!

No no, you were right, I want this for racing on pavement.  Thank you for all of your tips, I will try them on my next run.

The Traxxas wheelie bar would work wonders though if I could get it to work the same way as on the e-revo brushless, hopefully Steed will post pix soon, I am excited to see how its bolted on.

Heres what ive done to my flux, It makes it literally un-rollable

Axial beadlock rims
Proline 40 series bow tie tyres
TCS crawlers XL flux chassis plates (orange)
HPI suspension conversion kit
HPI Stiff springs 11.5 coils (yellow 177gF/mm)
80 weight shock oil
front and rear sway bars
Hitec 7980 steering servo (6.0v torque: 38kg speed: .20sec)
Integy universal shock towers

Also i have lowered shocks by putting a piece of fuel tubeing over the shock shaft inside the shock body itself. You can change the ride height by the length of tubeing you use. A good and cheap way of lowering you savage. You will have to cut the springs down to suit the length of shock you will have.

You want to get it low, stiff, wide and long for it to be able to handle. This combination works really well, hope this helps.

I had the same problem you are having when i first bought the Savage. It handled horribly. Leaned like crazy and flipped on the slightest turn.

My savage today handles totally different. I first upgraded to the HPI suspension conversion, I got RPM arms all around, I made my own holes for the stabilizer bars and its holding up just fine. I got a new steering servo. I got the longer, wider Wheel hubs and put smaller hpi wheels/rims. The bigger tires dont help imo.
I also got the HPI big bore shocks and filled it with 40wt oil.

The truck handles totally different now. The biggest improvement is in how it turns. I would really have to try to flip it now. The upgrades where worth it.

Hope this helps.

Yeah lowering it does a lot but it sounds like all of you really like the Savage Suspension Kit so maybe I will look into getting that.  It is a little pricey but it sounds like it really works.  I have stiffer springs already, 9 lb. in the front and 10 lb in the back but I definitely need some work in the tire department, I will probably go with Proline Road Rage just for a little added run life over bow ties.

Thank you to everyone for all this help!  I really appreciate it. :-D

Yep it is worth it. I wouldnt go back to a regular setup. I havent seen any body that OWNS one say that it wasnt worth it. Most people that knock it dont own it and dont see the advantage of it.
