The velenions are far from being a top contender in the esc market but being the 1st waterproof esc for 10th scale , they are not that bad. They did have there problems when they 1st came out but this new hpi/castle esc is much worse at the moment than the velenions. The velenions as of right now handle heat way better. I personally don't run one anymore nor the hpi esc. For now I'll stick with my mmm & mmp.

FINALLY got to run my second hand Flux XS today for the first time.
I was running on a Gens Ace 5000mah 2s 40C.
Before I ran it I checked out the antenna thing and saw that it was very close to the drive shaft. I just took off the antenna tube cap, pulled the wire tight and put the cap back on so I didn't have to worry about a loose wire.
I was very surprised at how well she ran. VERY FAST on 2s. Definitely could not run on full throttle for long without losing control. This truck definitely does not need 3s unless your trying to set a speed record on straight runs. Motor, esc and battery were barely warm. I must say it was a HOOT!! I was driving in a fairly small space, can't wait to open her up in a larger space.

I finally got my savage flux xs today. I am a little dissapointed. It burnt the speed control in 10 minutes! I am using a 5000mah 3s 25c onyx. Should i go down to a 2s? Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Sorry to hear that. You should have ran a 2s, some of the guys on here are running 3s after they change the settings on the ESC. Go back through the thread and you will find the info.

Finally got my XS back out after putting the rear diff back together with the parts HPI sent under warranty. Ran it on 3S on an asphalt parking lot after toning down the ESC quite a bit as mentioned in some earlier posts and I can't believe how much power this thing has, it is doing standing backflips and then some!
I checked the motor and ESC afer a couple minutes and they wer both at about 110 so I beat on it for a bit until I heard a clicking sound coming from the front diff. At that point the ESC was at about 140 and the motor at 180 (little hot for my comfort). Took the front diff apart and here is what I found. I'm guessing HPI will come out with HD ring gears after a bit which don't have the recesses on the back which look like a huge weak spot (like MT2 HD gears and Savage gears).

Funny but i thought a 3s would be too much but the guy at the local hobby store assured me that it would be fine.

Sbird,
I know it's a little late now, but always read the threads first. You can't trust most guys at your LHS. They just want to sell stuff.

guess so! learned my lesson! will a 2s be reliable on the speed control? I am thinking about getting a mamba max pro esc as a replacement that way i can run until the replacement comes from hpi.

3s is fine, don't always believe what you read in a thread.

I don't know why people think its a load issue since there is no evidence to support that and a production fault can't be ruled out considering many are running find on 3s.   The settings weren't changed to save the ESC but bring the truck into control and save the driveline a little bit since the truck is a handful on 3s.

I think the overloading idea came from f5's amperage data but then we were all assuming it was an SV2 that had a (assumed) limit of 100 amps.  If it is a different creation, be it a disguised mamba max pro or something inspired by it instead, then we can't assume anything from the load data other than the truck is a pig on current under a heavy load.  Remember its called the Vapor Pro to distinguish it from the Vapor and it may be more than the case that is different.

When i went back to the lhs they felt bad for me and put in a used vlx3 so i could run it and it lasted about 2 laps down the block and poof out came a cloud of smoke. I am just trying to find a setup that will be reliable and durable. It was almost to fast with the 3s. very hard to control and i have been playing with these for about 20 years so i know how to drive. Granted the technology is changing very often but i would scrifice a little speed for reliability. Just wondering is a 2s and a mama pro would work better for the heat issue.

I am just concerned about putting another $130 esc in it and having it go up in a puff of smoke too. I already have 2s packs so i am set there.

There is no heat issue that I know of.  I run a mamba max pro and SCT motor and its been great.  I would go with the stock setup and if it goes get it replaced.  Remember there are still a bunch of people running these without problems.

Ok, my XS just arrived and I want to order 2s batteries. What should I get? I am too lazy to fish through 54 pages and I would like to place an order ASAP. Thanks

Time for an update,
Have approx 100 batteries through the XS (modified) and she's holding up fairly well. I am on my second set of drive cups (yanked from XS #1) and finally broke one yesterday. In a rush to replace it I scoured the HPI parts at work and found A549 axle that could work with some finessing.
In order to use the A549 axles you need to drill the drive hexes out with a .196" drill bit or #9 and use the stock drive pin. While it was apart I changed the bearings to Traxxas #5116 sealed bearings.

T9....Here's pics of the wheelie bar.

Used the stock mounting locations for the trx bar...fixed it to the back skid plate

removed the bumper and used 2 zip ties to the bumper support.

Not a super clean job....but effective.
