I don't think any gas engine would fit inside the cowl. Maybe an RCV, but that's it.

The Saito would look fine hanging out the bottom if you mount it inverted. Otherwise you need to go electric. That's why I went electric and not gas on mine.

ORIGINAL: hyflyer9

would you say a 32cc 2 stroke gas or the Saito Sg 36 220 4 stroke Gas engine would be a good match for this plane
Thanks
I would say a 32 would be good. I have a few flights on mine with a DLE-30, and it's plenty. I'm going to get another cowl to cut because I'm thinking of trying to get a 55cc in there. I've attached some photos of my plane & engine. The 30 doesn't stick out as much as I thought it was going too. I bought a j-tech muffler for it, but all for not. I can't use it because of the nose gear.

This is the Engine I am thinking of an Aerovate 32cc I also have the 26cc in my ESM P47 and the muffler is only 1 5/8 inch wide and 4.0 inch long . Now i am not sure what size the dle 30cc is for dimensions and i am not sure what the ESM P39 has for room under the cowl but I will sure give my best try to get it in there without having to cut it up to much . I have also made a small mod to the muffler i cut the exhaust stack short to 1.0 inch and then added a copper elbow to aim back tward the cylinder and another copper elbow to turn it a little to the rear and down . I also added a Photo ofmy top flight P39 and ESM P47

You might have to add some weight in the tail if you go too large on the engine. I had to add about 1/2 lb. of weight to get mine balanced. It's a great flyer and would be fine with a 30 or 32 engine. It won't be a rocket, but will be pleanty fast and very scale.

Hoping to see more P-39 video sometime soon Jmohn.
The little we've seen thus far looks great.

On a side note, I told the guys in my club about your RC bowing video I saw and we'd love to know more about it ie: details, rules, where you got the ball etc.
You can answer via PM or something as to not clutter this thread.
Thanks !

We do a "fun fly" every year and it's a blast! We have some crazy and fun events like:

Bowling: you tie a plastic bowling ball to a long (10-15 foot) string to a rubber band under your plane (works best between the gear) and try and know down the pins. Who ever gets the most in a minute or two (set a time) wins that event.
Cut the ballons: you try and fly your plane through a bunch of balloons tied to a stake and cut as many free as you can in the set time. This one event is responsible for destroying more planes each year than all the others combined, but it's so fun to watch
Take off and land: you roll a die and you must take off, do as many loops as the die says, then land. Who ever does this the fastest wins.
Spot landing: you must take off and declair a landing and try and land the closest to the cent mark on the runway. We have a big circle on ours.
Bomb drop: you carry a bomb in a coffee cup on your plane and try and drop a bomb the closest to the center of the runway. We use Kleenex with flour inside for our bombs. You only get one shot at this.

These are the best ones, but there are more too. I won this last year, but could not defend my title as I had another committment that weekend.

I get people mad because I use an electric plane and it's so much easier to control because of the throttle response and how light it is. I can land on a dime and do the other events so much easier with electric because of this. But, they can go electric too

Make sure you use an "expendable" plane as we lose about half each year in these events. I used a Hanger 9 Cub last year and was going to use my little Hyperion CAP 580 this year as I sold the Cub. I think a Cub or other high wing is about the best plane for this event as it's a stable plane and easy to control.

No video guys... sorry ... I have been traveling a lot for work and haven't had time to fly anything. I may get some time next weekend. I did extend the nose gear on the P-39 a little as it was leaping off the runway because the AOA was too negative and it needed a lot of elevator to get it up before the end of the runway

Should be much better now. It flys great and landings are easy. I will try and post some video next time it's in the air.

BTW - got a Maxford SPAD 13 on the work table now. It's beautiful and very well made. Hard to believe how nice it is for the price.

AM PLEASED TO HEAR THE QUALITY OF THE SPAD IS GOOD.
JMOHN...YOU ALWAYS END UP WITH ALL THE PLANES I WANT...I COVET YOUR HANGAR!! BE SURE TO START A HREAD ON THAT ONE.

If a 30 works, would my Evolution 26cc? I fly scale, don't need vertical.

What's the weight of the Evo 26 ? That's a strong engine but isn't it pretty heavy for the amount of power it puts out ?
I just picked up one of these big girls... I may do it in the scame scheme I painted my Top Flite P-39 in: The Russian "White 34"
I'm putting a PTE36cc in mine.

The 26GX manual says 3.8 hp at 9,000. Weighs 2.75 lbs with muffler and ignition. Swings an 18x6 @ 8,700 rpm. Bought it from a friend who flew it one time in a big cub.

Have you flown your Maxford Spad. I did today with poor results. Very tail heavy at their 3 5/8" specs. Will contact them tomorrow. Need lots of replacement parts. I suspect that the CG should be moved forward to about 2 1/2" to start.

Partsmax,
That's a bummer about your SPAD...I had looked at that plane.
BACK to the ESM P-39 and use of a 26cc there however in SPOTTER's question.
I believe that engine is probably a bit underpowered for this bird.
I've flown several 70"WS ESM warbirds wih a 26CC and it is marginal for those planes.
a 26cc engine in a big cub is very different flying/ performance than a 26cc in a big warbird.
I'd recommend a min of 30CC's

Spotter:
As I previously mentioned I'd go with a min of 30+CC's say the DLE/ DLA/ MDS/ PTE/ AGAPE/ RCGF type.
With gasoline, I try and look at the power to engine weight issue (then ask yourself, do I need extra weight in the nose or does it need to be lighter up front?) I also try and add up the overall weight of what the plane will be in order to keep the wing loading as light as possible =better performance and engine won't have to work as hard .
It's far better to have extra power from a bigger engine that is not necessary than a plane filled with extra dead weights to counter balance your investment. Usually, the shorter the nose, the more engine weight the better. on a plane like the P-39 which has a prety long nose, you'll want to be carefull about getting heavier engines.
From most things I've read, the DLE's have agreat power for their size.
Here's the info/ Specs on my PTE36cc I'm going to use in the P-39
PTE36R (Pterodactyl)
Displacement: 36cc
Bore x Stroke: 38mm x 32mm
Max. Output: Estimate between 3.8-4.2 h.p
RPM Range: 1300-9500 rpm
Weight: 2lb 4oz Overall weight with muffler & EI
Propeller: 18x8 18x10 19x8 19x10 20x8 20x10
Compare this lighter weight and output compared to the weight of the 26GT

Don't get me wrong the 26GT is an excellent engine (I have an MVVS26=same thing) but it may not be the best choice for the ESM P-39.
Just my 2cents

Patsmax,

Bummer about your Spad ! I will keep mine nose heavy as recommended by you. Maybe start at 2.5 inches like you said. At lease if it's nose heave it will still fly decent.

I fly an evo 26 in an ESM Dauntless at 16 3/4 lbs and it flies good and is VERY fast with a 16x8 APC 2 blade. I think I would at least step up to the 35 cc, the 26 would fly it I'm sure but you would be working it pretty hard. Maybe look at the DLE 30, the guys at our field have had good luck with those too.

Thanks for everyone's input on my Evo 26cc. Keeping it simpler, I ordered instead the 81 inch Aichi D3A1 VAL for 26cc or 120AX. First observations, it'll take a lot of nose weight, don't use the hardware (excuses to go to the hobby shop), the wing is a big dark green surfboard.

I've got the Pteradactle36 in mine now (finally) and has a special muffler made to fit in the cowl and to straddle the nose wheel.
My bird has been sanded painted and is very close to being ready to rumble !

I think I'm too impatient...I just disn't want to paint the camo I guess.

Any more videos ?
I'm a lil' worried about overheating or superheating the air before it goes in the carb with the way she's set up, I may have to make a special ram-air breather for it.

You're really going to like the VAL. Junk all that nonsense re pull-pull on the rudder and elevator back in the taiul and go w/ pushrods. Mine has the OS120AX which is plenty of power, JR Sport 126MG servos all around except for the throttle. The specs for it weight added, balance point, total weight etc are over in my shop but if you're interested (or have any other questions) PM me and I'll get them for you. Airplane flies just great. You're right about the wing! One look at that thing and it's really clear that airplane was designed to lift boimbs.
A few pics attached.

I have the ESM 80" P39 and i don't much like the pull pull systems what would be a good push rod set up for the elevator and rudder for this plane .

For the VAL I had to do some of my own engineering (imagine that on an ESM/KMP airplane!), cutting a new hatch and through the rear former. Then I used Dave Brown pushrods. I think they're fiberglass but can't remember. Once I figured out where I wanted everything to go, actually doing it was pretty easy. The Dave Brown pushrods are really easy to use and are pretty light.
