Hi all , I maidened my version 2 of the extra yesterday.
I made some drooped wing tips out of block balsa that added 100mm to the wing span
& fitted up my RCV91cd engine for power.
Only had to use the 4.8V battery pack on the engine mount to balance at 85mm.
Take off was VERY FAST at half throttle & it required three clicks of down elevator for thumbs free level flight.
After a low pass I went verticle at full throttle & Whoow, the climb was out of sight and actually ended up in a hover, hanging
on the Prop so it is possible to get this thing in a hover however it didn,t have the power to pull out of the hover so I
had to drop out & she didn't like that, luckily I had plenty of height to recover.
I misjudged the approach speed on the landing & I ended up coming in alittle to hot & ended up tipping on her back further down the strip.
A couple of light scratches on the top of the cowl & rudder was all the damage , but the way the RCV hauled her around esp in the
verticle suprised/shocked all of us ,all in all very very impressed & she flew very straight and true with the 2% down & right thrust of the engine.
All up weight came out at 3500g not to bad considering the weight of the 91cd ,just hope she doesn't quit in the air on me , even with the extra
100mm wing span I dont think she glide very well !!.
All the best Steff.

Something we all probably have to do at some stage in this great hobby of ours REPAIRS !.I had a bad landing experience yesterday , came in way to fast & didn't bleed the speed off in time ,then had a mental episode & botched the flair ( as in NO FLAIR ) SHE BOUNCED & THEN DROPPED A WING, managed to get the wings level before she hit again but one wing tip dug in & over she went.
a little damage to the top of the rudder some scratches on the cowl & canopy and messed up one of my drooped wing tips.
So out with the tools & iron & now we are back to flying status.
I have to say the RCV91cd is a great engine combo for this plane ,more power than you require , A am flying around half throttle most of the time but when you want to go verticle or throw her around it's nice to have all that power there, & high speed low passes [X(].
Steff.

Hi,

I've had one of these CMPro Extras for about 3 years now and I like it. I've always had it balanced just in front of the Fibreglass spar, I have recently redone the cockpit and I also still run an OS 61 FSR (About 25 years old engine) which is more than enough grunt for normal aero's, I'm not very good at 3D stuff...

Does anybody know where I can purchase a replacement canopy? Ak-models doesn't sell replacements and Nitro planes is out of stock and don't know when they will be getting any in.

Thanks!

How bad is the damage?

There are usually different things that can be done.

One easy suggestion:

If it's fractured or even cracked, tape the pieces in place from the top, using masking tape, trying to retain the original form.

Apply CA to glue the fractured pieces back together carefully.

Then you could optionally apply fiberglass and epoxy on the inside to make the canopy stronger, finally lightly sand and prime the outside a dark color.

If you want to presever the transparency and the cracks are not too bad, I've resorted to the first steps, then I apply striping tape to hide the cracks, by making the striping appear to be part of the canopy itself.... e.g. establishing symetrical stripes.... etc.

You can also often get a canopy for a similiar but different plane ( preferably something larger ) and using a heat gun form it to your plane... but this takes some experience to get it right.

Just got home & had a look & the canopy is new & has not been used because I used the old canopy on the new extra, see pic,s.
Also have put some cessna gear/struts on her to see how she lands with a wider track, so far seems to work fine.
Also included a link to a vid I put on utube with the first one that I lost & the replacement, dont think I have posted it on this forum yet ?.
All the best Steff.

You will have to greatly re-inforce the firewall. The existing firewall is designed for non-vibrating electric motors and will not withstand the force of a glow engine's vibration.

I would also add epoxy to all of the internal structures to reinforce those, along with their adhesion to the plastic.

Ooops I responded to the wrong thread! I was talking about the EP extra... my bad!

My recomendation would be a 60 sized 2 Stroke, the 46 may be a little underpowered.

That's true it will be underpowered ! You may be disappointed and you will have to put a lot of lead.
Previously i put a 55ax and it wasn't enough for my side ; not enough fun ! Then with a 70surpass aerobatics were far much better !

I was wondering what would be a better power plant for this aircraft. An ASP61A 2 cycle or a ASP FS80AR 4 cycle.
