Hurrikane Build Thread
One of the more popular wood Q-500 kits is the Hurrikane.
The fuselage kit and and landing gear are available through Super T RC:

I typically build a couple models at the same time.
I am also building a Venom fuselage. This is a HurriKane with wing cut outs for a Viper wing.
The plywood doubler is attached with wood glue.

I vacuum bagged the doubler to the fuselage side.
This is strictly optional, but it insures the parts are held together until the glue drys.
Some twine was routed around the parts. The bag was joined with latex caulking.

The saddle for the tail on the Venom is not correct, and will end up causing you to need a LOT of up trim to get it to fly correctly. I checked all of this using my 3D CAD capabilities and have coordinated it with Dan Kane. He agreed with my analysis. You will need to lower the leading edge of the stab about 3-32" to 1/8" to get the saddle to line up at 0 deg. I attach a .pdf of the tail saddle. The black outline is the fuselage "as cut", and the purple line is what is needed to get the tail to sit at 0 deg aoa. Several fliers in this area have built Venom's from the Super T kits, and all have had issues with the tail angle. I am not sure if Super T has corrected this in the current batch, but you should check before you glue things together. Also, the outline shown is the intersection of the V-tail with the OUTER surface of the fuselage side and thus you must bevel the inner edge of the fuselage side to allow the tail to sit correctly.

Its odd, I had someone tell me the same about the Snaker.
Checking the CAD, it looks correct, wonder if it has something to do with the airfoil, or inconsistancy of the Viper wings?

Draw a cross section at the LE/TE junction at the fuselage and you'll be able to accurately determine the required cutout in the fuselage sides. Yes, when it looks wrong it is in fact correct because of the increase in width of the fuselage at the LE.Its not difficult to draw. Every kit that I have checked has been incorrect, not by much but enough to warrant resolving.TH, NZ

The way that I did it was to create a 3D model of the fuselage side (3/16") thick by projecting the top and side views from Dan's HurriKane drawing. That gave me a solid object shaped with the proper curvature and placed correctly in space. I then drew the V-tail with a 4-digit symmetrical airfoil that was 1/4" thick at the root and maintained the same PERCENTAGE thickness from root to tip as the V-tail chord decreases. I then placed the V-tail on the fuselage model, at the correct height, resting on the stab platform and made sure that the stab angle of attack was zero. I then "intersected" these two solid objects and got the magenta tracing that I posted above. Yes, it does look kinda funny, but as mentioned, it's because of the changing width of the fuselage and the change in chord of the stab. The stab intersection really doesn't have anything to do with the wing section since it is maintained at 0 deg aoa on both variants (HurriKane/Venom, & Seeker/Snaker) There probably will be trim changes however because the 66-012 is symmetrical and the S8064 is cambered and produces some lift at zero deg aoa.
Anyway, since I'm a relative newbie, I figure that this is at least one way that I can help out.
Dave: If you want, I can use your Seeker drawing to perform the same check, I'd be happy to do it.

It is a simple trig function for those without a cad program or the time to draft it.
Measure the width of the fuselage at the leading edge (LE) and trailing edge (TE) of the V-tail.
Take the V-tail angle, divide it by 2 and subtract from 90. This the the angle of the V-tail above the horizontal plane. We will call this angle alpha in degrees.
So the difference in height of the leading edge and trailing edge is as follows:
The height difference on the fuselage side = [(LE-TE)/2] x Tangent (alpha)
This is the amount the TE must be lower than the LE on the fuselage side when the wing is mounted and at zero-zero.

I built 4 HurriKanes and a seeker. Wing saddles and tail were all correct. Of course I did use my set of tools to assure every thing was right.

The construction will continue in a few days.
I've built several "V" tailed models in the last couple years.
You should always measure the wing and tail to insure things are straight. Use an incidence meter to level the wing. Then use a string level on the tail to confirm it is level.
The Hurrikane and Venom are quality fuselages and I don't expect any significant issues.
I better get back to work.

Things were slow around the house so I framed up a couple fuselages tonight.
I began by printing off the instructions from the Super T web site. Tonight's work covered pages 1 to 4.

After breaking the parts free you dampen the sides with a damp cloth. The water activates the Gorilla Glue.
A thin bead of glue is placed around the edges. Parts are inserted in the laser cut slots.
The parts fit very well.
The instructions recommend furniture clamps holding parts together. I didn't have any so I used some rubber bands instead.

The first fuselage took me about 1 1/2 hours to frame up.
I set it out of the way to dry.
The second was done basically the same way. This time it took about 1/2 hour to do the same steps.

yes, the calculation is correst as stated and is as quick as drawing it.....if everything is accurate and you still require elevator trim check the position of the CG THNZ

Yes Gary and I had previously discussed this. And Yes there was a slight change when I converted the tail from the HurriKane to the Venom due the changed shape of the fuselage at the rear. (I knew this but accepted it as I didn't think it would make a big difference, as I would never set a tail without checking it's incidence relative to the wing.) I am not 100% sure what that dimension change is, but I don't remember it to be as large as 1/8". The drawings and cut files were updated. New Kits should be accurate. The Snaker was drawn after, this change was noted. Therefore, from what I remember I incorporated this into Snaker.
Out of all the models I have built, any of the 4, I never had an incidence problem. Please check your incidence when securing the tail.

I totally agree with DK, ALWAYS install tail with an incidence meter. I see this so much with high performance electric stuff people just screw/glue the tail on and complain when it needs trim?

Tape the motor mount to the fuselage and drill holes for the blind nuts.
If you use the large hub blind nuts, you will have to cut some of the blind off.
These were pushed into the firewall with a pliers.
