Default How far do you travel?

How far does everyone travel to get to their club? I'm on my way back into this hobby and the closest field is 40+ minutes away.
To me that seems a little far and that is going to potentially keep me from getting back to flying. []

35-40 minutes, 22 miles. Worse at rush hour, so I gave that up. Unless you fly "park fliers" in a local park, model airplanes and civilization are rather incompatible.

I belong to two clubs, both about 10 or 15 minutes from home. One of them is almost co-located with my place of work. From time to time, I'll fly at both clubs on the same day.

Good luck,

Yeah thats where I looked, unfortunately its not very accurate. The one in Cape Coral is indeed 25 miles from my house but a 50 minute drive according to GPS. But with snow birds and all that it would be at least an hour.
Buckingham, last I heard they lost their field.
Punta Gorda is actually 47 miles and about an hour north
Port Charlotte is further than punta gorda so didnt bother looking up the route on that one.
Naples one doesnt allow anything but electric I guess.

Such a shame [:@]

Hey Bob. I guess I am very lucky, as I have a runway cut into my pasture. It takes about 3 min to get there. I also belong to a club, and it takes about an hour to get from home to the field. I know this will sound crazy to some, but I do more flying at the club field than at home. There IS more to this sport/hobby than just the flying.

I have one field 17 miles from the house that I don't care for and one 27 miles that I like to fly at. When I was in Calif. I lived on a mountain and had to drive an hour and fifteen minutes to get to, a nice field, or 35 minutes to a not so nice field. I packed a lunch and made a day of it. I went flying three days a week. Today I still pack a lunch and get at the field during the summer at sun rise and leave about 11. This time of year I can get there early and stay all day.
If your a one or two flight a day kind of guy you may want to give those park fliers a thought.

My club used to be 7 miles away but was relocated due to road construction. It is now 20 miles away and even though there is 2 other closer I wouldn't dream of leaving my current one for them.

My flying site is within 175 feet of my shop, pic below. Have another that's about 7 miles away. The nearest formal club is about 15 miles.

36 miles. About an hour's drive in good traffic, longer in bad traffic. So like was said, I dont bother. There are others closer but their flight box is a bit small for the planes I like to fly.

That sort of depends on if I want to fly with people or not. The club I used to belong to is right at 55 miles each way. When I fly as a guest with my brother and brother in law, it is right at 150 miles each way [X(][X(][X(]

Now, if I just want to fly, I walk out of my garage and fly. My 350 foot runway is about 50 feet from the work bench.

I fly out of two clubs, one of them is 40 mins drive (asphalt runway) through highway, the other one is 25 mins (grass runway) through country roads.
So it all depends on my moods that day, if Im not in the mood of cleaning dirt out of the planes I will drive a little more.

It's the people that will make it worth while. You spend a lot more time in the pit area then flying. The club that is only 17 miles from my house I don't like the people very much or all the rules that aren't followed. It doesn't take me any longer time wise to go the extra 10 miles. Here in the Vegas area once you get on the freeway it's a drag race. It's the surface streets that take the time. At 27 miles it's right off the freeway. Very good group of people.

That is sometimes based on a club officers house which can throw thing off by a long shot! So I never go by what AMA says, I get the name of the club and go to their website if they have one.

My club is almost exactly 20 miles and I can make it in about 45 to 50 minutes if traffic cooperates. There is a club about 12 miles away but they don't fly during the week on a regular basis. Our club fly's Monday, Thursday and Saturday, we usually have 10 to 15 pilots there all of these days with Sat usually a few more. Most of us get together for lunch at a local fast food place and the fly a couple of turns after lunch.

With gas at it's current price and being on a fixed income I have had to cut my flying from twice a week to just once which is either Monday or Thursday based on weather etc. I have always [since retirement] kept weekend for the family and camping.

When I was in Antioch,TN (Nashville) I was about 5 miles from my club, 2 exits south on the hwy and 1 mile off of the exit. It was about a 5-10 min drive. Now since I moved to Marietta, Ga there are two field within 20 miles. One field is North, and the other is south in Atlanta. There are also a few other fields within about 30-40 miles. The funny thing is that all the fields are about 30 min away.

It's 23 miles to the County Parks and Rec field with a paved runway; about 30 minutes. Our alternate field is 32 miles or 40 miutes and that is behind the track at Lowes' Motor Speedway. Neat place to fly but closed during the races for obvious reasons.

Eleven miles one way for my local field. I also belong to a club about 150 miles away (so I have a place to fly when I go visit my daughters).
