If not for the fact that I've always felt that a warbird demands a 4-stroke, I would have chosen the gas route in an instant. As it is, I'm installing an O.S. FS-95V 4-stroke glow in mine.

Question is how often do you maintain your two cycle weed wacker or leaf blower?
I personally use it every other day in the summer with one pull start with plenty of abuse and neglect.
In the winter they just sit there year after year and in the spring they start like new.
No internal rust like glow engine are prone to to speak of.

Yeah, I agree with the care and maintenance of my "Big Lots" weed wacker, because I've got $65.00 invested in it and I use about 20 times a year! But, if I'm to lazy to shoot a couple of drops of after run oil (marvels mystery oil) in my 4 stroke, then shame on me! Gassers are nice especially in short moment/nose war-birds! Especially if you got a big round hold to fill! I've had them in the past and they were great and now they are so cheap! I prefer the sound of four strokes and I don't fly enough to worry about the cost of glow, because I'm lucky if I get through two gallons a season!
What's nice about this airframe, is that it lends itself to all kinds of power options!

hi guys sorry about causing some problems on here. anyway i found a tail retract from tower that i see a few of you are using will order it dont know how to install it but when it comes im sure i will work it out if not i will ask for advice as this is only my second plane ive built. but i love it.

I will let you know that my weed wacker was built as a model airplane engine, can't get them at the depot yet! I had a Saito 150 in my P 47 until I kept having bearing failure. So after throwing $450 away I decided to try gas. Like I said to each his own and some are hardcore glow, and some are gas, whatever works for the modeler is the right choice, glow, gas, electric, they are all good. Just don't show up a a competition for glow only, or electric with a gasser, bad educate!

I can tell you this, I have & love all type of model engines, but right now I am snatching up 4 cycle glow engines left and right! The deals you can get right now on glow engines are great (due to the small gasser craze I'm sure)! I got a Saito .82 run 1 season for $50, 2 magnum .91 FS:1 for $60 and the other for $75. The $60 one was new![X(] Low nitro fuel doesn't really cost that much to me, and when it does I will mix my own with no nitro! My TP P-47 has a Saito 1.25 currently, which is way too big. I may just Slap the Magnum .91 in there to see how it does... at 1/6th the price of the Saito it will be even sweeter.
By the way, these razor back conversions I am seeing on here are great!!! I would love to do one and paint it silver. I would also go gas on a painted/glassed P-47... more paint to choose from.

I worked all day on my Jug, got all the control surfaces sanded and ready for hinges and details. I was successful in creating a scale hinge line on the ruder and will be able to do a pull pull as I first wanted to do. I am using the carbon fiber pocket like on my chippy build, I have added a new material to that process. The carbon fiber works great on fairly strait runs but on the raidiouse of the bottom part of the fuselage at the ruder I used very thin ply and layered it to a acheeve the pocket, it came out pretty sharp. I also got a lot of work done on the stabilizer and will be doing a hidden torque rod for that. Being this is an ARF it is a little challenging on some parts and easier on other because I don't have to spend a lot of time building. This will pretty much be like a kit build in a way. I was feeling regret that I did not get the kit version but now I am glade because I just did not want to start from scratch and I really want the bubble top!
I hade to increase the stabilizer 7/8" to line up with the ruder, and I added 1/2" to the ruder for the hinge points. Once I get the stab done the wing should go quickly, pretty strait forward with the pocket and the hinge line.

I brained stormed last night to figure out how I would do the Pull Pull connection to the ruder being it is partially concealed in the fuse, it also came out pretty sharp too!

I have fond that my desire to "tinker" is a disease that is slowly consuming me 
but I am just going for solidly built, stand back scale, reliable, and fun, and by no means accurate scall, mine is a fantasy plane with a mix of all kinds of P 47s!

That is the engine I went with. I was going to go with a dle20 and still might later. The 115 will probably be overpowered but that is ok for me. I am use to rediculous power... If I go nitro it will always be a saito 4 stroke or ys 4 stroke. I will probably put a perry pump on her and toss the muffler to the side and use a 90 degree exhuast adapter with some straight pipe. I'll fit a pressure fitting on the 90 degree adapter. I'll try a graupner 14-7 3 blade

My first task was to cut the hinges out of the flaps, then glue in new blocks. I added balsa to the LE of the ailerons, and elevator to bring them back to square. Tape was used to mask off the areas I did not want to sand. Next start to round the LE with PVC that I cut in half and used sand paper with adhesive on it, works great. Standard hinge point installation, cut a slot for the hinge and they are ready to go.

The ruder is proving to be the hardest with it's uneven shape. I added some balsa to the LE. I then secured two 3/4 " Sullivan control horns together to creat the pull pull horn for the ruder. I don't like to use standard horn and push rod on the exterior if I can avoid them! (tinker disease). I cut in the scale hinge blocks and spaced them in a some what accurate position, but not scale. Just putting them in the general location! They add a lot to the the look and detail. I came up with a system using two short threaded rods with clevises. At the end I bent them to creat a loop eye for the pull pull wire. There is a small block with a pice of tubing for the rod to aline threw, then a space to allow the connection to move freely before the tubing for the wire resumes again. I cut a small access hatch under the stab and by shear luck there is a hatch in the general location on the full scale so I will detail it in. The hinge pocket was achieved using 1/4 carbine fiber strips and some thin ply. Minor adjustments will continue as things come together.
On the stab I added close to an inch of material to bring the hinge line back to the ruder hinge line. This required adding some sheathing to the top of both side to make the stab thicker as it extended back to the elevator. I had to cut a slot in the back of the fuse to open the stab slot so that the stab and ruder lined up. With the hatch I will be able to apply a good coat of epoxy to the stab when I glue it in and I added some small blocks to the top and bottom of the inside back at the end to provide strength when I glue in the stab. The elevator torque rod will be at the end of the fuse and I slotted the end to allow free movement. In the LE of the rude down at the bottom where it is fat I will hollow it out to allow the torque arm free movement when the elevator is in full up and the ruder is in full deflected position, if not for the fat bottom portion of the ruder I would not be able to a heave this.

I completed the ruder and the hinge pocket, here are some pics
Step one is to clamp a piece of balsa to the TE and I like to use wax paper. Next clamp the CF piece to the scrap balsa and apply thin CA. Then cut and lay in a small square stock and clamp and glue it in with CA. That’s pretty much all there is to it!
I started to work on the stab and masked it of for sanding after I completed the hinge pocket!

Here is a look at the ruder linkage.
I glued in a piece of balsa with a plastic sleeve for the push rod.
The push rods will be connected to the pull pull.
The stab is all completed and covered in putty; I have started on the fuselage while I wait for the stab to dry. I used a set of DLE30 stand offs, worked great.

Thanks ultimate2, the motor instal is temporary, I used washers to see how the motor will work with the cowl and the dummy insert. I will glue in 3/4" birch ply blocks so that I will have no washers, stronger that way! I started doing the wing hinge line.
