Default Four-Star 60 Kit Build

This is my 4* 60 with a RCV 91CD 4-stroke rotary valve glow engine. It is a great flying plane and it shows up late in the evening.

Wow, I like it!! Question, I have never been around the RCV engines. They don't show up often. I built one plane for a customer and talked him into giving the other type RCV a try. He had to have the engine fit completely in the cowl of his Hell Cat and that was the only engine I had seen that would do the trick. That and it swings a huge prop. Anyway, the plane is a hanger queen so I never saw it fly. What do you think of the RCV. I know they break in way different and the Bee Hive critter required a special starter. I have read a lot about them on the RCV page. Just wondering what you think about them. Would you buy another one?

The RCV ran great, it was the maiden flight. I used a gallon of 10% Cool Power to break it in and on the maiden flights. It is a little heavier than the OS & Saito 4-strokes. That worked out good for me because the 4* was tail heavy. Also, I am using a McDaniel on-board glow starter.
It has a good idle and ran smooth on all three flights.(no dead sticks) It has a 13x6 APC prop now, but I plan to change it to a 14x6 or a 14x7. The weighted prop spinner helps and it sounds just like a normal 4-stroke.

Great looking 4*. I'm currently flying a 4* 40 with an RCV 58 on it. It's been a great performing engine.

Has anybody here shortened the wings by one rib?? I see that some builders are doing that to their Venture 60. That plane is the next design by Bruce Thorpe after he designed the 4* planes. I would love to build a Venture 60 but they are not currently available. I guess I will build the 4* 60 and plan on the shorter wings. What do others think?

Clipping the wing by two bays is the norm. It does help the roll rate but it isn't a huge difference. I couldn't see the thumb nail very well but I think this is a shot of one with two bays removed. It is.

It's fairly common to clip the wings on the 60 size 4 Star. I've flown them both ways and prefer them shortened by 1 bay on each wing. A slightly faster roll rate but the biggest advantage is a lessened tendency to float on landing. Easier to bleed off speed and pinpoint the touchdown IMHO. It still retains it's friendly nature without the need to throttle back and slow down so early in the landing pattern. My current one has this mod as well as a slightly larger rudder. These great planes fly well in stock form but tolerate all sorts of mods we modelers force upon them.
