RE: BVM F-4 build
I ran out of time posting yesterday before I had to do other things so here are the last pics of the nose door repair on the "C" model or short nose.
pic #1 shows the tape line on the new door for the hinge side. Once again when cutting these cut slowly and outside of the line, take your time, and lap them in.
pic #2 shows the door all cut and the final lapping beginning to come to life. Now we will hinge the door per the instructions and add the poly ply door stops. I go around the entire perimeter when I add the stops.
pic#3 shows the doors alll fixed. A much nicer fit than originally. All that is needed is a light coat of K-36 primer and it will be as good as new. Big keys is taek your time. There is nothing that cannot be fixed if you take a moment to look at it and asses the situation.
For those who might be wondering about the large rectangled hole in the aft door and what it is foro. I would like to know myseld, but it is present on all short nose Phantoms. Anyone out there have an idea?
Next update will be all about installing the inlet cheek cowls on the fuselage. After this I will follow with intake installation, bypass/tailpipe/exhaust nozzle installation. Then we will mount wings. Going to be a busy December. Double Ugly's are coming together!!!!

Hey john here's a picture i found of the aft nose gear door. Now the question is did that door and the inner doors for the mains close arfter the gear was extended like the f=100 does? If thats the case my guess would that opening in the door is to clear the gear strut scissor arm you see in the picture.

Buck, I need a real answer. Not some po-dunk airline pilot know it all stating what he thinks it might have been. What the heck. You have been out of the military for about 2 years and already you have turned into a weak heart, limp dick, woosie who drives a bus for a living.
Still remember a time at tthe Fresno jet Rally many years ago when this young dumb ass Marine said he would never fly cattle cars or buses. What happened there? Decide you need a new Fry Eagle ref-4 phrantom??? so you take job to pay bills???
Hey if you ever fly into Midway and are here for a short bit, drive on down!!

Craig,
Well said about the single seat mentality. "Were my tapes on? Nope...whew!"
Buck-seriously, I'm with John on this one. Firebreather to a whiskey delta just like that! Next thing you'll be calling every child a snowflake and all that. When are you back in Vegas? I gotta a new Ultra Flash you gotta fly!
Dave

Nice work on the doors John. I agree that working slow, and removing very small amounts of material, is the key to getting a good fit.
Question. What tool/saw did you use to cut the curved main gear doors? I use the good old Xacto saw blade with the back removed, but this wont cut round a curve. Any other tool I know of leaves too big a gap.
Thanks
Roger

The heated #11 blade deal does not work on carbon. The carbon in the wing just laughs at it. I use the #13 saw blade from excel available from Micro Mark. These used to be made by X-acto about 20 years ago, but have since been bought by Excel.

This blade fits inside a #1 handle and works great. I used about 5 blades per gear door on each wing. So 20 in total. Figure another 2 per servo cover on each wing so another 8 will finish it up. This small saw blade is pretty incredible and once you use them you won't know how you lived withot them.

Thanks Bob. I have heard of using a heated knife to cut fibreglass. Haven't tried it myself. Would this help with a curve??
The challenge with BVM gear doors, is making a nice thin neat cuts in the fibreglass/carbon skin. The cut out piece becomes the door, so a fine gap is preferred, so the doors close nice and tight (like Johns above).
I can make nice straight cuts with xacto blades, but a curve eludes me.. The xacto blades are nice and thin, but the blade is too wise to allow for a curve.
Roger
Ahh, Thanks John.. This is not the big wide Xacto saw that BVM reccomends. Its spomething different.. I will see If they send internationally.

John,
How do you eat up those blades so fast, I'm still using the same five or ten I ordered years ago. You can also dress up the edges with scotch tape, CA and kicker, I like to put a little thin CA on all my door edges just to dress them up.

The nose of the blade goes quickly in the carbon. I would bet if you got sme new ones you would go....holy crap, I should have ordered new ones years ago.
As sson as they quit cutting easily I stop and change. A main door should not take more than 15 minuntes to cut out.
