Tony,
Yes this is the 82 model. I finished 7th I believe just behind Don Lowe who was stoked at 6th but upset he didn't make the finals. Tony I flew in the 80 TOC and actually flew Deans 88" Laser with the Cline drive and on OS 90 (my pic with Leo Loudenslauger). The reason I flew Deans airplane is that one week before the TOC our 88" Laser crashed while practicing at home (battery). Dad & I drove nearly all night after work one evening to Springfield and picked up Deans airplane because he wasn't flying in the TOC that year. I believe he had Air Force job commitments and couldn't go so he kindly loaned me his airplane. Don't remember where I finished right off hand. Then in 84 I wasn't flying anymore so Dean took my big Laser as a back up. So now 29 years later it's back in the air with electric. It's really a nice flying airplane I just haven't got the combination figured out yet for a long enough powerful enough flight. Hopefully I'll get it. Great sharing memories with you Tony.

OK, now I remember! After you mentioned it I can now remember Don placing 6th in 82.
I loved the Lasers! A friend of mine, Frank Faber helped me build two of them for the 82 TOC. I actually flew one of those in the 84 one also. Funny how details can fade with time! Wish I had saved all my old models like you have. Sure would be fun now!

Great to hear from you. I haven't got an all up weight yet...I need a scale to handle it however with a 10s set up 5000mah batteries I believe it weighs the same or a little less than the orginal Tarten set up with fuel. Should be around 18.5 lbs RTF. I'm very new to electric and I'm learning the hard way. I flew it with a 22/10 APC and liked the performance but could only get about 4 1/2 min flight time...not enough. I went to a 19/8 Zoar and could get about 5 1/2 min and I really didn't like the performance. Needs more pull. So now I have a 12s 5800 MAH ready to go just waiting on weather to try it. I learned a little more battery is a lot heavier...almost 2lb heavier! I believe I'm going to have to keep the smaller prop. It's pulling 95 amps. With a larger prop like an APC 21/8 it went over 120amps and the controller shuts down. I really think you need the larger speed control, swing a bigger prop but man I just don't know how much battery you need. I'm running out of funds if you know what I mean! I could use advice since I'm new to this electric set up.

I bought a Tartan Twin for mine then sold it when I put the plane in storage. I just pulled it out of mothballs a few weeks ago and dusted it off. I was thinking it wouldn't be good for 3d with the small control surfaces, but I am just going to use it for IMAC so it's okay.

It looks GREAT! I believe you have the best size airplane and the right power set up. I'm new to this electric thing as you know and I think I didn't go big enough on my speed control and batteries. When I discover my errors I just keep spending money to try & fix it...the school of hard knocks.LOL! Keep me posted and I'll try and do the same. Look forward to seeing you in Chicago.

I haven't flown my Laser yet but I'm hoping the same setup I use in the Integral will work. I'll try a 21 X 14 APC first and see how it does. I should be able to get it ready by Thursday when George & I usually get together to fly. I also have a 20.5 X 14 APC. May take a little less prop due to the additional weight compared to the Integral, We'll see.

Your Laser looks great, nice job. At 13-1/2lbs your Integral setup should be good. I just finished a 78" Extreme Flight Extra 300 that weighs 12-1/2lbs and with a Scorpion 5525-225 putting out 3000 watts, it has plenty of power.

Thanks for the info, I really like your choice of the Rimfire 50cc, it looks like a good match for the bigger Laser. I think your move to 12s will make a big difference. It will lower the peak amps, but I think you still need the CC ICE 120HV to handle it and the motor specs call for a 120 ESC. Also, look to a bigger prop, either 24/10 or 26/10. Electrics like bigger props, a hard lesson I had to learn when I switched to "E". Not sure what you flying style is, but another lesson I had to learn was throttle management. If your setup has over 200 watts per pound, you should be flying at 1/2 to 2/3 throttle most of the time. Very different from the old nitro days where we were full throttle from takeoff to landing. That will lower the battery usage and extend your flight times dramatically. I was talking with some pretty smart electric guys at dinner last night and they think 12s, 5800mah batteries should be good for nearly 10 minutes if you are manage the throttle.

I have seen Dave's Laser up close-it is going to be a very sweet plane. I've already predicted that it will become his favorite every day flyer. After looking thru this thread, I've decided that I ought to build the IM TOC Laser kit that I've had for the last 5 years. IM didn't produce any written instructions, just an exploded diagram view of all the parts. I've got a jig to build the wing, but I can't figure out how to build the fuse-I'm used to building fuses flat on a building board. I don't think a building board will work here and I'm guessing some sort of jig is necessary. Anybody built one and can give me some insight how to build this fuse? Alternatively, I guess I could impose on my buddy Burton to build the fuse for me. He's a building machine.......

It's finally finished. Hope to fly first time in the next couple of days, as soon as the wind lays down here. If it flies OK then I got to get in practice flights of the TOC sequence for the Chicago contest this month. Time's getting short!

Gotta love the Bud Light colors. Have you checked with the CD to make sure a clear canopy is not required? TOC did and IMAC requires clear canopies and according to the rulebook are supposed to dock you points for not having a pilot figure and panel. Although I have never seen it enforced but I would check on the canopy. I have always loved the Laser. Currently I am building two 33% versions. One may be up for sale when frame up is complete.

First two flights this AM. Needed a little right aileron trim, nothing else to fly straight and level. I have some aileron differential issues to work out, need more aileron throw and less elevator, need a little incidence adjustment on the wings to take the trim out and I need to move the CG just slightly forward with battery placement. Didn't work on anythine else for trim today. Once I get these things done I'll work on other trim stuff. Has plenty of power and is going to be a very nice plane to fly. I'm happy!

The TOC I attended had Hanno Prettner winning with a huge Dalotel powered by a twin gear driven unit. Dave Brown placed second with Wayne's Laser powered by a Tartan twin. Dave's anti-rotation pin had a problem that caused his incidence to change on that one wing. Its a tribute to his piloting skill that he was able to place at all.
Let me know if this is your year and I'll get you copies of the picture(s) you want.
Now my motive. I've been scouring the forums looking for the cowl, pants and canopy to fit Wayne's 98.25" wing span Laser. Fibreglass specialties produces them for the smaller version that Dean flew; they don't fit the 98.25". Do you know where I can purchase them for the 98" model?
I've also come across a 120" span Laser by Jack Strickland. The plans, cowl etc. were produced by [email protected] but he's never responded to my emails. I'd build this version if I could get the plans, cowl etc. Do you know of another source?
