Best all around 40 size engine
I have been out of things quite a few years, what is considered the best 40 size engine to get now? The club I was in years ago, the ASP was what everyone used, but I don't see them advertised anymore.

In keeping around the .40~.46 size of the class, the best bang for the buck is definitely Sanye engines - Magnum/ASP/SC.
Longevity wise, Enya and Fox.
Better quality, but same performance as Sanye, OS 46FX.
Honestly, the major chinese manufacturers have been increasing the quality of their products over time, while keeping a decent price for the budgeted modeller.

I prefer the Fox .45 engines myself too. Great engines, barring a bad crash or something, they last forever and seemingly never wear out.
They are made in the USA too.
The new carburetors Fox uses are great, especially for newbies getting started.
The engines run great with 5% to 10% nitromethane fuel using a blend of synthetic and castor oil. Just put on a 11x6 prop and you are in business.
Plus parts are available if you ever need them. Fox doesn't make throwaway engines like many other manufacturers do. And they have a good warranty repair system too.
If you need a small .40 size engine Fox has one of them too. It is slightly larger than a .32 or .36 engine but not by much. It makes for a good hop-up engine for more performance out of a .25 to 32 size plane.
Fox has a cool upgrade program where if you trade in a clunker engine, any brand, you can get a new Fox engine for 50% off of the retail price. That makes all of the engines priced attractively then. Also if you returned a engine for repair and the costs exceed 50% of the price of a new engine, they'll offer to replace it with a new engine instead for the 50% price. But wearing out a Fox engine is a very long process as you can get manymany hours of fun out of them over many years.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
I got back into the hobby a couple of years ago.
Had O.S. .40s, .45s and .61 Sfs. Had been pickled for 15 years. Started right up and still using them.
However, I bought a K&B .18 fro Randy Linsalato at MECOA. Stared and the first flip and took two tanks to break it in. Strong performer.
As most of you know, Fox and MECOA manufacture these engines as a side business now. They need to keep there equipment working on other manufacturing jobs to justify staying open.
I can see a time in the near future that there will be no more american made engines.
Buy american.
YES, let's keep supporting China.............they are very very poor and need money for their Nuclear cause.................
in keeping with the topic though, the BEST .40 in it's class today is made by Dub Jett,

If you want something similar to the ASP, get a magnum .46XLS from hobbypeople.

There is no arguement that the Jett is head and shoulders above everything else available,........but when the OP mentions that he is looking for a ASP, he just wants a inexpensive sport engine and is probably not in the Jett market. Like trying to sell him a ZR-1 vette when what he really wants a chevette..........
I'm suprised some chi-com company has not yet made an attempt to copy Jett engines yet, or maybe they have and can't get past 17k rpm without exploding.

I would say Fox .45 followed by the OS .46 AX and then the Magnum .46 XLS. I paid $47.99 for the Magnum 3 years ago when on sale and it has performed great in an Escapade for the last 3 flight seasons. But the Fox is a better engine with a great new carb design and even better service.

I have only dealt with tower hobbies, do they sell Fox engines? Do the modern ASP engines run as well as they did 15 years ago?

Not worse than 15 years ago, that's for sure[8D].
Since you're in the US, get a Magnum, same engine as ASP. Lets say Magnum is Sanye's brand for the US, while ASP is for everywhere else

I like American and buy it when I can, but I am a Thunder Tiger fan because of cost and dependability. They make a great engine that is dependable and I don't have to wonder if it will start. The only time I ever flew Fox was control line in the 70's and always had starting problems with manual starts. I had one K&B in the early 80's and it never was dependable - would always flame out after a few minutes in the air. Thunder Tiger - never a problem. They consistently start and run until the tank is dry, and won't drain your wallet.

The Chinese engines are machined with CNC machinery............. But So are Fox engines. Their fits and tolerances are as good or better than the Chinese Mfg'd stuff.

To answer what is best, you have to declare what the criteria for best is.
Do you want raw thrust at the expense of weight plus fuel consumption?
Do you want an easy to manage engine that will run on a variety of fuels?
Want dirt cheap to be your criteria?
Many answers in this thread detail "best"... depending on the requirements.

RE: Best all around 40 size engine
My boy is 11 years old and I want to get back into it with him. I am wanting to find a ARF trainer with a decent amount of work that still needs to be done, so that he can experience how the things are put together. So I want an inexpensive (it very likely will be in the dirt a time or two) but easy to start and operate but has enough ump, that if it survives, he can use later on a low wing. I have always wanted a Super Sportster, so that is what I plan to do with maybe a 4 stroke?
