Just received my new Rascal 110. The box was not crushed and all the contents look good so far. Beside the addition of flaps SIG has went to Robart style hinges which I'm glad to see because I switched all of mine to this style of hinge when the CA hinges started giving away on the old Rascal. I do not like that the hinges are pre-installed and glued in. The limit of travel is minimal. The wheel pants now do not have the seam line that was visable on the old Rascal. The quality still looks as good as the original Rascal 110. Only time will tell as I get deeper into the build but so far the first impressions are good.

Hey Zippi!

Can you tell me what the width is on the cowl? I am wanting to run a Laser V-Twin Inverted.

Thx

Perry

I'm a bit confused where you say the limit of travel is minimal? Do you mean the amount of control throw you can achieve is minimal?

Also, if a person wanted to remove batteries for charging, is there a hatch in the fuse?

PTS,

The ID of the cowl in the middle is 5".

bladebender,

There is no mention of electric setup in the manual or the manual update.

JeffinTD,

Since all the control surfaces are pre-installed and glued your stuck with what you get. If I could have glued the hinges in myself I would have set the control surface out a little futher to gain a little more throw. From experience with my last Rascal 110 you need all the throw you can get if you want to fly a little 3D. There is no hatch in the fuse.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose if it were a major issue, a person could cut out the factory hinge points and install the hinges of their choice, but that would be a pain.

Hopefully it will 3D ok.

I'm really tempted to order one today. Not sure if I would go EP or DLE30 or what. 4 stroke 36 Saito...

Hmmm....

JeffinTD,

Either way you go it will be a nice flying plane. This morning I broke out the heating iron and gun and started tightening up all the covering. It really didn't need it but I like to go over all the seams just to make sure the covering is down good and tight. While tightening up the covering you get a good chance to look at and feel the wood and once again I have to say that this plane is built solid. I think my next step will be to add the black pin stripping to the fuse.

Hey Zippi-

Appears to me-kinda hard to tell-that not only are the hinges pre mounted but so are the control horns.

Can you confirm?

Sig did what they thought was right to use hinge points, where they failed is they had the factory glue them in. You would think anyone droping this kind of jing for this ARF would have a firm grasp in hinge installation, allowing the owner to do his thing the way he wants, why did'nt they just leave them un-glued, crips, c/a hinges would be prefered over too tight points, easier to change over!

I'd have used the removeable pin heavy duty hinges, pinned in place, but we all have our preferences.

Do the flaps have any up movement, are they hinged in the middle or lower edge of the flap?
I was wondering about having an aileron - flap mix for 3d.

phakur,

All the control surfaces are pre-hinged (glued) except the rudder. The hinges are glued into the vertical fin but not the rudder.

CellTech,

Box says made in China

Didg,

These are Fowler flaps. Down only.

If I can bug you guys with another question: What servos would a person use in something like this?

I've had good luck with Hobbico, and was looking at cs-70, an analog metal geared double ball bearing servo. 133 in/oz and .20 sec @ 6v. Basically equivalent to hitec 645mg.

Thoughts? Would probably run dual li-fe...

I will be running Hitec HS-5645MG Digital on all control surfaces except the flaps. HS-645MG for the flaps.

I have not been this excited about a plane in a long time. The Rascal has great potential. I am going to build a Red/White Version.

Engine - Laser 240V
Prop - 18x8 Mejzlik
Spinner - True Turn
Servos - HITEC 5645MG
Wheels - PSP MFG
Control Hardware - Central Hobbies CF w/ 4-40 Ends

I fired off an e-mail to my guy at LHS to get me one in red, with the same servos.

I'll probably run the AR9110 powersafe RX and two li-fe. Overkill I'm sure, but I think I'd like to have two isolated batteries on something this size.

Anyhoo, I'm really struggling with engine choice. A four stroke gas I think would really be neat on this plane, but the Syssa appears to be a nice engine, as is the dle30... for around half the cash.

Kind of leaning toward Saito FG36. Basically a gas version of their 220.

Anyone have any thoughts? I'd like adequate power to hover and to pull floats, though the floats would likely be pretty light (seaplane supply foam cores sheeted and glassed).
