Default FW: F-35B Cool Vid

A friend sent me this E-mail. Thought I would share.
Joe Lewis

This video is fresh (for the public). It was made just six weeks ago in the Atlantic, just off Newport News (Hampton Roads), Virginia .
These are the latest sea trials of the F-35B on the USS Wasp. They were very successful, with 74 VL's and STO's in a three week period. The media and the program critics had predicted that we would burn holes in the deck and wash sailors overboard. Neither of which happened. You will notice a sailor standing on the bow of the ship as the jet rotates. That was an intentional part of the sea trials.
The USS Wasp is an amphibious assault ship designed to embark a Marine Expeditionary Unit. It is capable of simultaneously supporting rotary and fixed wing STOVL aircraft and amphibious landing craft operations. For this test deployment the USS Wasp was outfitted with special instrumentation to support and measure the unique operating environment as the F-35B conducted short takeoffs and vertical landings.

What a neat video. That thing has to have some serious rams to hold that top door in place coming up to speed.

Great video. One question I have.....is there and issue with lack of rear visibility out of the canopy with this jet? It seems to go against the grain of the design of jets like the F15 and F16 in that respect.

COOL !!! many thanks for show us.

The most curious thing is the down stabs in the take off.

Great video, it's a noticeably more stable hover than the Harrier. You might be surprised how much is English. Elevon pitch down is probably needed to counteract the upper barn door

Probably like the P-51, the D model will have a bubble canopy

Hello

Very nice but what about the reliability of this kind of "precious" bird in operationnal campaign ?
And while the plane goes down vertically, if a failure occurs, it could be dramatic for the boat.......

But definitely impressive to watch !!!!

and..... with this kind of bird, you have to take off with an airbrake opened !!

Thats the exact first thing that came to mind for me too... Do our brains always try to figure out failure points? LOL

Actually the lift fan door actuators have turned out to be undersized and will more than likely be retrofitted. But yes the aerodynamic forces are quite a handful!

The shape and scope of warfare – worldwide – just changed.
I don't think so. The Marines want VTOL capability, but it takes a lot of thrust, extra engine for the vertical takeoff and landing, etc., etc. End result is that combat payload and range all suffer. The B model will not have the same capability in those areas as the non-VTOL models. Some folks (USMC obviously) still think the Marines need VTOL - I'm not so sure. For what it's worth.

Gus

I am sure if they sustained combat damage they would not return to the ship but seek a more conventional landing
on the nearest runway out of the combat zone. Very nice video thanks for posting it...

Unreal and you are not seeing the half of it. I'v seen both the F-35 and the F-22 demo and it has to be seen to realize the potential.

I don't necessarily disagree with your conclusion, but the F-35B does only have one engine, not two...

No. The helmet provides auxiliary visibility to the pilot, via strategically positioned cameras. However on the F15 and F16 you cant really see that much behind you anyway. The ejection seat blocks your view.

I believe STOVL transition is engaged at about 150kts (from what I can remember from the Sim) I would think the door can take up to 250kts, though it should never see that speed.

Not sure if the principle is the same. The Harrier generated so much noise, the earth gravity pushed it away... Plus, since it had to carry all the noise, payload suffered...:-)
