I like the way my mech retracts work. I did mine the same way Mike did his but I used wire in place of the ny rods. I also got some good information from the Dymond F8F Bearcat ARF forum (see like below) starting at post #40.

That's how I've done my retracts since the 90's, I read an article in a magazine that described the process. My reasons for wanting to try the electric retracts is saving weight, costof the extra servoand the aggrevation of set-up.

I'm really going out on a limb. I got a set of electrics from Hobby King!

They arrived withing a week which was impressive, not to see if they will hold up. I'm going to set the plane up so that if they crap out, I can switch over to mine!

I have a JBA15G that I might use. The stock carb is to big for it, but I have a smaller one to try. If not I did purchase a slightly used Super Tigre .90 gas conversion. They are both close in size so either should work fine.

Okay you have my curiosity up. Might get a US60 but what engine do most of you power it with? And I assume no standard either trike or taildragger. And are kits currently available?

Thanks,

Personally, I think the best engine for the 60 is the new OS 75AX

I prefer the taildragger setup with retracts. (Can't do retracts with a trike)

Kits are available and they are giving free shipping right now:

Any way of finding out how many US60 kits Tower has sold since they spooled up production again? They are still making them, a good sign.

I altered my original landing gear setup on my US40, and did it the same way from the get-go when I built my US60. The US40 showed me that the blocks in the wings were weak points. I like taildraggers, but I got tired of the blocks popping loose. What I did was inset a piece of ply on the bottom nose block just in front of the wing, and bolted a dural gear to it. It's proven to be rock solid, enduring even the roughest of landings, and it handles great on the runway.

I hate to confess I'm not the brightest bulb in the room but would someone please explain to me what a "dural gear" is and how it helps control during rough landings. I have built 2 60US and don't recall their mentioning a "dural gear"anywhere in construction. Futher in the last 35 years I have built numerous kits and never had a recommendation to install a "dural gear" much less suggeting it be bolted to the nose block. On both of my US60s I rounded the top, bottom and sides of the noise block, recalling it was composed of 4 separate pieces of balsa to be rounded for a 2" spinner. Both of these birds were tail draggers with manuel retracts. Sorry to be so dumb but maybe it just comes with age and curiosity.

"Dural" is a generic term for a tempered aluminum alloy. It doesn't bend as easily as other aluminum alloys

These are the gear I got:

Dural gear is your standard tempered sheet aluminum landing gear blank, the sort sold by GP and others...just choose the appropriate size for your bird. It's easiest, of course, to do this during the original construction but it can be done anytime. How I installed the ply plate is as follows (sorry I don't have a pic or illustration handy): Make a ply plate to suit your chosen gear, leaving a bit extra on either side for sanding and filling. Drill holes and install blind nuts for mounting the gear to the plate. After you've gotten the bottom balsa nose block all shaped nice and pretty like the instructions say, grab your razor saw and prepare to make a mess . Cut a notch in the bottom nose block so that the mounting plate will fit flush against the wing hole along it's back edge and the front edge is flush with the nose block. Epoxy it into place. Sand the sides of the mounting block so that it blends in with the nose and it's all nice 'n' pretty. Sand, fill, and cover as usual. Mount the gear to the plate, with the angled side of the gear facing forward. This puts the wheel position at very nearly the same position as the stock wing-mounted ones, except that it has a bit narrower stance. I promise you it's much stronger that wing-mounted wire gear.

Thanks for the info. I have had several planes over the years with this type of gear, just never heard it referred to as a dural gear. In fact I modified an old 60 size Sky Rader for this type gear instead of the standard wire gears. See, you never get to old to learn something. And to think, all this time I thought I knew it all and there was just nothing more to learn.

HK has about the worst reputation in the industry. Buying anything from them is a crap-shoot. Their stuff is cheap, but if anything is wrong with you order, or if anything breaks, just figure you lost the bet because their customer service is like that commercial with the guy named "Peggy"

Ihave returned a couple of things recently, and they had me send them to their warehouse in Washington state. Then, within a week or so I saw a store credit appear on my account.

Pros: Cheap return postage, quick response.

Cons: You only get a store credit, and you do not get theshipping or the return postagerefunded.

Still not the best customer service, but a vast improvement over the old "send it back to China" system.

It helps, when you get a lipo at least you have a place to send it now.

I like the carved balsa cowl. I threw the plastic thing that came with 40+ in the garbage as soon as I opened the box.

It's almost midnight on the east coast, santa should be by anytime now.

Merry Christmas to all and to all, a good night.
