Like all things that are good and are bought in quantity the price of jets are coming down, technology is improving easing reliability and performance
You can't beat the smell of a running jet engine and to be in the presence of such power from a small package

Jet's don't cost $20k. A reliable engine can be had for $1800. You are right on one point... "GAS" is the way to go... but unfortunately for you... you seem to only fly Glow. (messy, nasty excuse for a fuel)

Ha! You think jet engines are expensive. That price is nothing compared to a beautiful woman. Now, that's expensive! If it flys, floats or ... well, you know the rest.

Besides the initial cost of a turbine engine, it should go in for inspection/overhaul every 25 hours. That will usually cost a minimum of $500. Right there, the operating cost is $20 an hour. That's not counting your investment in the turbine. Then add the fuel cost of $4~$5 per every 8 minute flight. Do the math. Basically, hookers are cheaper.

Engines on average are "serviced" every 25 hours, but some go as high as 40 hours. An average flight will use about 10 minutes of run time on the engine, this includes starting and a complete flight.

Thats about 150 flights between services on average. Some may get 300 flights some may only get 100.

You can buy used jet engines for $1,000 or less sometimes, and new ones can be had for $1600.

In terms of burning money, some people have it to burn. Others choose to spend it on RC jet engines, instead of buying a bigger house, or buying a fancy car. Anyone who makes 30K and has no life can afford these things. It just depends on who you are and what you want to spend your money on.

You would be suprised how much money buying a new car can waste, or eating out at McDs all the time. Its all about priorities.

I recently purchased two jet engines and airframes, all the fixins to go with them. I also drive a 1998 toyota carolla that has the exhause wired up to it to keep it from falling off. I have a family of 5, and my wife does not work. We live in a 160K house. I makeway over30Ka year. So can I afford jet engines? not really, but I choose to have them instead of buying a new car or bigger house. In my area it does not make sense to do these things as our taxes are high. A new car and new house means much more of money will go to taxes. My car gets beat up in the harsh weather,so whats the point as long as it runs and gets me to where I want to go.

So once again it is all about priorities for some people.

In terms of gas being the way to go, I prefere electric over Gas.

I like your response Skydv. I live in an expensive house, my wife drive a Mercedes. She is a dentist and owns the practice. Before we got married, I had a $115k house for just me and the cat. But I keep cars for at least 10 years. I have a truck and an Audi A4 that are 12 years old now. I have no debt. I was able to do these things because my priorities were to stay out of debt and make good use of the money I did have. I've never made half my wifes salary, yet, she is broke and in debt because of poor priorities. She thinks RC planes are expensive, but so are the multiple trips she took to Europe, Mexico, the far East, the expensive house and the Mercedes. All of which were done before we got married. I have tried to curb her spending and get her debts paid off. But I refuse to get out of RC! I have been in it since 1975. It
"recharges" my batteries and probably keeps me from becoming a serial killer! Just kidding.

So its not really how much you make, its how much you spend on stuff that doesnt last, like trips and cars. I've never spent more than $2500 on a plane, but have many. I'm getting into jets just now. Yes its expensive but everything is relative.

Sorry to be so wordy but this thread has hit a nerve with me. Like you said, its all about priorities.

Everyone have fun in the hobby, its the best!

Wow is right. I've just read 3 of the most ridiculous posts....... ever.

... talk of hookers, houses and cars from fools spewing their income and propery values. Some people have no filter when they speak. [8D]
