Super Tigre Ringed 40
I have read a couple of reviews on the Super Tigre ringed 40 size motor now made in China and I was wondering if anyone here has tried one. Tower has these for $75. I have had a couple of 60 sized ST engines way in the past and thought thet were excellent engines. I was just wondering if the Chinese versions were as good as the Italian made engines.
Here is the engine I am talking about. Thanks for your input.

I have an Italian made and a Chinese made .51, they are identical. ST moved the mfg equipment to China so they are made on the same machines unless they've been replaced with newer stuff.

RE: Super Tigre Ringed 40
G'day Ratshooter. Like you, I had some Italian ST engines some time ago and loved them. More recently I bought a 51 (ringed) which I ran in normally but then had problems with throttling. The problem was the ST plug. Once I put an Enya #3 into it, it became a great engine on 10% nitro. Until recently it was flying a GP big Stick 40. Sadly, I forgot to pull the antenna up and ..... But the engine survived and only needed a bit of a clean and is now running well again.
I have also bought a 40 recently and it is part way through running in and is already running well. A friend has one in a Phoenix Twister and loves it too.
They are excellent value and run really well.
Enjoy

RE: Super Tigre Ringed 40
Thanks for the imput and feedback. I had read one review on this engine including a teardown and the reviewer was impressed with the perfomance and the quality of the work and materials. I read so much I just can't remember where I read it.
I may give tower a call tommorow and get it ordered. I like the idea of a ringed engine. It seems like they were a little easier to break in and a new ring will put them back in like new condition. Not that I get to fly that much that I will wear one out soon. Lol. I wish.
I have a couple of 40 sized planes I am planning on building, a Sweet Stik and one of the Bridi designs called a Loadstar and a 40 is needed for both. This will be the third Loadstar I have built. The first two had Tower plain bearing 40s on them and that was power enough. This will be just a little better.

RE: Super Tigre Ringed 40
The page I posted from tower has a link to Super Tigre. Super Tigre has a link to RC universe and the review I couldn't remember where I had read it. It was right here. Duh! (rolls eyes and slaps forehead). Anyway here is the review if you haven't seen it before. I am for sure getting this engine.

I was wrong about the break in. The article stated that the ringed engine would take a little longer to break in than the typical ABC type of motor.

I've read in a few posts about ringed ST's taking awhile to break-in, which is true though they should be flight-ready in 4 tanks of fuel or so. I ran-in an Italian S90K awhile back and after 3 tanks of fuel, it was ready to roll. Ring was seated, and it was throttling pretty well. Granted, I was using a 16oz tank on a .90, but I still think if ran rich, 3-4 tanks and it should be ready for flight. The trick is getting the midrange just right. After 2 gallons, it should really be singing nicely.

My Chinese G.34 steadily and visibly improved over the span of about 1.5hr running. At that point, it had become a "1-flip" engine to start. It was also very happy running plain 80/20 FAI fuel. Its got about 9 hours on it now and still has the factory plug in it.

Agree that ST's are great engines and that the Chinese made ST's are just fine. Yes, full break-in takes longer with a ringed piston, but they can be broken in while flying after a 2-3 tanks. I would not hesitate to buy another.

Although the equipment might be the same, the operators and raw materials (metals) are most likely different. Having run and used ST's from Italy over 40 years, they were very precision made and ran very smoothly. I bought 4 of the "new" St 40 GS years ago when they first came out, and the best I would rate them is ok. I'm not saying they were bad, just not the same -

Hi!
As you can see from then test "ratshooter" precented above the Super Tigre .40 only rew 12450rpm with a APC 10x6 prop. The Kyosho GX .40 turn that prop at nearly 14000 rpm using 80/20 fuel (one or two head shims removed and using a Nova Rossi 4 or Merlin glow plug)!
