RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build
Maybe someone can help me here, I am buiding the 1/6 pup and ran into a snag, the die cut false ribs are considerably smaller than the full length ribs, what I mean is that with the wing on the building board the ribs touch the plans and the false ribs dont , also they are smaller all the way around, these are called 1/16 ribs, there are some false ribs that are exactly the same size but are used else where, any ideas be would helpful. thanks ...dan

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build
Dan,
This part of the build had me scratching my head also. I'm guessing that the 1/6 scale builds like the quarter scale pup.
The smaller false ribs you are talking about aren't really false ribs. They are the forward parts of ribs that are meant to go were the small section of sheeting is applied on the inner edge of both left and right sides of the wing, at the point were the left and right wing panels are joined to the center section. When you use the smaller ribs under the sheeting the sheeting comes up flush with the other ribs that are not sheeted. Bare with me here, I am working from memory. If you sort through all the rib pieses I think you will find that there are 18 ribs that are 3/16" smaller in profile then the rest. This allows for 3/32 sheeeting on both sides. Of these there are 8 for the upper wing, and 10 for the lower wing. I think there are 16 that are stamped out in 3 sections each. Leading edge, center section, and trailing edge. There are also two complete ribs that have that same smaller profile, they go in the center section of the lower wing, because the section is also sheeted.
I think if you lay all the rib pieses from both wings out on the bench and do an inventory it may start to make sense. I guess the biggest thing to realize is that there are ribs that are sheeted over and there are ribs that are not. If the wing is to come out a uniform thickness, some of the ribs need to be shorter in profile. I know I didn't figure this out until I had glued some parts in the wrong position and I had to go back and correct the mistake.
Hope this helps,
Dale

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build
Dale is absolutely correct. These smaller ribs are in place to compensate for sheeting (Make sure you center them for top and bottom sheeting.) Also, if the "false" ribs are a bit too small in length (front to back), you may need to shim slightly with a bit of scrap to fit against the leading edge. In addition to this, on my 1/4 scale, I sanded these ribs a bit and adjusted the shape so the sheeting would fit perfectly, making the wing thickness uniform with the sheeting in place. Very easy to do with a sanding block.

Hi Ewan, if you want to post pics don't use the fast reply at the bottom of the screen, use the reply button in the top right of the post window, there is a reply, quote, fwd and a yellow circle there.
(When you are reading this it will be in the top right of this box)
Once you are in the bigger reply window, at the bottom is two options, use the "click here to upload images and files"
Also don't try to post pics that are too large, you can open up pics in paint and resize them down to 200kb or so.
Regards Mark
PS I'm starting the fuse now.
I have a dremel under the tree that will come in handy, woohoo

The beautiful white Sopwith I believe is a full-sized replica. BEAUTIFUL!! If that is a model on Yellerchamp's message, that is a fine rendition! Check out the following pics:

That looks like the pup from the point cook museum here in Vic Australia, it's about an hour away.
I have been meaning to go there for a while.

Beautiful rendition of a great plane - one of our guys as a 1/3 scale - not sure if its Balsa USA or not - I am enjoying the build and building right along - trying to make mine look like the reeves kit - lighting up the tips and center section - not to scale but having fun

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build
Hey Guys, I have a question regarding the "N" Strut alignment. The instructions refer to using a large square to ensure that the N Struts are vertical. Should these be vertical to the building board, or vertical (square) to the wings. With the dihedral, I'm not completely sure here. Some help is appreciated.
Thanks!

Hey Kevin,
With the wings parallel to one another and wing tips equal distant from the board, I held the n-struts square to the building board.

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build
Thanks! That is what I was planning but wanted to verify. Will have to move the location of the strut on the bottom wing to make it vertical to the building surface. I also leveled the wings and ensured that they are perfectly parallel, with 0-1% positive incidence. Everything actually came out perfect without the need for any shimming. "Better to be lucky than good."
Thanks!

Ewan,
I always try to keep servos around the center of gravity. Then I can move radios, and batteries and such for balance. High or low is a matter of how easily I can get to them.

Ewan, All my servos are mounted just ahead of the cockpit area also, similar to senrak. Happy New Year! BTW, my Pup got to stretch his wings last Saturday; lets start the new year off right!

THANKS GUYS FOR THE INFO.
SENRAK IN THE PIC YOU POSTED THAT IS WHERE I INSTALLED THEM TO DAY, BEFORE I EVEN READ THIS. I ALSO GOT THE KELEO
EXHAUST FROM MISSES CLAUSE AND GOT THAT ALL MOUNTED ON RADIAL.
CANDO, MUST BE NICE TO BE FLYING. WE NORMILLY FLY OF A FROZEN LAKE IN THE WINTER, BUT NOTHING IS FROZEN YET.
CRAZY WEATHER THIS YEAR.

SENRAK, IWAS THINKING ABOUT YOUR PIC TODAY AND WENT BACK AND CHEQUED AND I SEE ONE SERVO THAT IS FOR THE
THROTTLE AND TWO BESIDE. DOES THAT MEAN YOU ARE ONLY USING ONE FOR THE ELEVATOR? THE REASON I ASK IS THERE
WAS A BIG DISCUSSION ON RCSB ABOUT USING TWO, EVEN THOUGH THE ELEVATOR IS ALL ONE. I AM USING TWO SERVOS WITH
ONE HOOKED UP TO A REVERSER, ON A TIGER MOTH THAT IS JUST A LITTLE BIGGER.
I WAS GOING TO DO THE SAME THING AND ONE FOR THE RUDDER. I WAS JUST WONDERING WHAT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE DONE.
ALSO DOES ANYONE THINK THIS IS OVERKILL??

RE: Balsa USA 1/4 Sopwith Pup build
Ewan, I'm using one 60 oz servo for the elevator with no problems. I've done many loops and a few snap rolls, etc with no hint of any trouble. You don't need fancy digital servos or high torque servos for this WWI machine. Of course, if you do a lot of 3D flying, that's a different matter!

Ewan,
I am using 108oz, analog servos with steel gears. They are probably overkill. I have re-inforsed the dowel rod connection between the two elevator halves with a u-shaped piece of piano wire because I have had elevater halves break apart in flight. It's not a pretty site. Using this method has worked fine for me and I don't need the extra servo and pushrod, or the reverser.
