RE: Great Planes RV-4 .60
Sounds like you're not going to have any trouble at all. Just remember that the ring in a DLE is very hard, so it takes a long time to seat. 4-5 gallons is not unusual for FULL break-in. Fortunately, as soon as you get the needles set after it's first start, you can fly the snot out of it. Break-in is best done in the air. Better cooling, for one thing and a hell of a lot more fun, too!

RE: Great Planes RV-4 .60
Hey Gang!!
Boy I tell ya all this seems to be one of the most popular threads on RC Universe..lol. Granted I havent searched every one of em but it sure seems to be popular..
Is funny that I just start a thread to ask a question about My, at the time new plane, it would blow up to be an AWESOME "Everything about RV-4" Go to section..lol.
I know I have been able to find out so much more about My RV-4 from just lookin around on this thread...

RE: Great Planes RV-4 .60
i found out that the zenoah G20 has 14.3 lbs of thrust with a 16x6 APC prop and a DLE 30 has 16.5 lbs of thrust with a 18x8 prop, with the muffler mod and 100 octane gas I am hopping I can get close to that

Please don't waste your money on 100 octane gas in a DLE. Their compression isn't high enough to exploit anything much above 89 octane. Don't put much faith in static thrust numbers, either. This RV-4 won't be judged by how well it pulls out of a hover. It's not that kind of plane. "Sport" planes spend their lives at higher average airspeeds that have different prop requirements than 3D. Many say that the optimum 3D prop for the DLE30 is a 19-8. For speed with a relatively clean airframe, a 16-12 to 16-14 works well. This RV is somewhere inbetween. IMO a 17-10 would be a good balance between speed and climb. This plane has LOTS of prop clearance so at least that's not an issue. The hot rod RV-4's at our field (there are at least 4) are in the 120-130+ mph range. At this point there haven't been any structural problems YET. I don't think you could push one much further with the stock tail surfaces, though. Early on a few people had problems with horizontal tails parting company with the rest of the airplane with predictable results. GP even replaced a few that were shown to have sub-standard wood in the tails. Were I to build another one, I would replace the stock horizontal tail with one made from a solid balsa sheet. It would be stronger and also heavier, which is needed with a larger engine anyway. I've never heard of a problem with the vertical fin or rudder, so they may be OK as is. Blasting around at three digit-speeds requires prudent handling. By that I mean SMOOTH. A stick-banger's relationship with this kind of hot rod will be a short one.

RE: Great Planes RV-4 .60
well instead of getting a DLE I am going to build up the Zenoah to liven it up a little, I already open the muffler up found a bigger card and found a machine shop to have the head shaved, the price for everything will be under 100 dollars

RE: Great Planes RV-4 .60
well got everything done on the little G 20, went with a walbro 257 carb DLE 30 muffler and shaved the head down. Now I can turn a 16x8 prop at 9300 RPM, just waiting for a good day to take up in the air

RE: Great Planes RV-4 .60
Guys:
Need some input. Finishing up my RV-4 and I'm finding a pretty significant misalignment with the stripes between the fuselage and the cowl (see photos, the silver stripe's the issue). Anyone else have a similar experience? Looking to determine if I should just live with it or arrange to have the cowl replaced. If this is common, I'll just live with it as I don't want to go through the trouble to get a replacement that's got the same problems.

On mine I came forward a inch from the pointed end of the cowl and drilled it out and put a plastic 1/8 bolt and nut on inside to keep vibration down, didnt want it to move and scar the monokote works good and you cant see it unless you are looking for it.

it looks like it needs to go forward and the front of the cowl needs to go up
