Greetings to one and all,

I have recently returned to R/C modeling and need help in making a decision on which to purchase. I have been considering an Aero Works Extra 300 at $699.95 nib or a pair of Great Planes Patty Wagstaff Extra 300's at $730.00 nib's. What I am looking for is some comparison opinions. Keep in mind that I do not intend to fly 3D, but rather sport/pattern flying. Also having the top of the line equipment is not necessarily at the top of my short list of priorities. I am also an accomplished builder so ease of assembly is in the same category. I just want to have a 300 that flies well and does not require a great amount of adjusting and maintaining over and above what would be considered normal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Extreme Flight 50cc Extra 300 is also a very nice flying model and is in the same price range as the AW model.

You will probably find the Wagstaff heavier and less aggressive than todays models.

Extreme Flight, Pilot RC, and Aeroworks Extra's are all nice. EF and Pilot are lighter but take a little less abuse than the AW.

If you're looking for scale style flying AW, if you're looking to 3D go with a PRC or EF

Being that you are coming back into the hobby, I would go with the Aeroworks. It is stronger and will take the occasional abuse better. I would be setting it up with a DLE 55 and Hitec 7955TG servos. Would be a great combo. If noise is an issue where you fly then add a canister and maybe a 3 blade prop. Right now Troy Built has the engine listed for 359.95 and that includes an IBEC. They also have the canister for about 110.00.


You are making a great choice with the 300 midwing. The layout is about ideal for R/C and just about all the manufacturers have streched the fuse to make it even better.

I've got the EF Extra with a DLE 55 on it so I'll just say that it's a great flying model. It's very capable of doing whatever you want. more so than I am of flying it.

There are a number of excellent 50CC extra's - take your pick - my son has a Pilot 260 with a DLE 55 and it flies incredible and after three years of hard flying - it is still in great condition with zero build or maintenance issues. IMHO - even if you only want to sport fly... these great 3D planes are a joy to fly - you can set the rates to regular sport fly levels of throw and have a terrific every day flier that fly like a trainer because the wing loadings are so low.

If you want an airframe that will require virtually no maintenance/adjusting and will last a very, very long time, you can't compare composite planes with wood planes. If you are willing to spend a little more, you should look at the Composite-ARF Extra 300 2.1m.
