RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
My rudder mod pics might be of some use to others, I cut mine to the black lines but would probably go with the red lines if doing it again, I did'nt have a plan so was'nt sure exactly where the ribs were inside. (Measurements on the right are from edge of fin).
I cut out a square in the rudder, the length of my control horn, and the width of the ball link + the thickness of the two horns.
I then cut two wooden blocks that size with their height the same as between the two skins so when I dropped them in I could push them to either side so giving me a "wall" to glue my control horns too. (sorry forgot to take pic)
After the two blocks were glued in place (glue set) I glued in the two horns with another block wedged between the two, the piece of top skin I cut out I was able to trim down and re-glue in place. Could'nt get a good match for the paint but passable enough.

Some other simple mods, stop screw to the main legs so they are not as straight when going into wheel well and prevent them catching on hinges, door frame etc.
Fitted a little magnet to the main doors inline with the wing attachment screws, great for holding doors close when in storage and maybe help in flight but bit worried might be two strong for rams to push open.
I presently have the screw in such a way when you tighten the bolts the magnet is too far away but when you loosen them off for wing removal they now catch on the magnets. Will experiment later with washers under bolt head to see if they could also be used for holding doors closed in flight.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
This L39 also was being fitted with a full lighting kit, It came from Globaljet but had no instructions or markings to say who made it, it was apparently for an JL L39 but came with two red anti collision lights, and nothing for the fin.
Owner not being fussed about exact scale I just fitted the red anti collision lights on top and bottom of fuselage, landing lights in tips were the correct size and shape but the wooden ring supplied was too small so I cut another pair on my CNC and ended up a snug fit with it held in place with small screws.
Nav lights were a bit fiddly nothing much to glue too but worked out ok, strobe lights flash way too fast, whole thing has made me think I need to start producing my own system.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Was not happy with the aileron rod position it is too far into the aileron and not on the hinge line so actually makes an arc up & down rather than just turn.
Along with that the screws had been drilled wrong and were right on the edge of the alum insert, (red circle in first pic) so I decided to glue in a hardwood block which brought the alum rod more in line with the hinge line and then added another block to the outside to sandwich it in, and glued the whole lot in with Hysol.
Much better job, the rod now rotates as it should. (pic was taken before I cleaned up excess glue!)

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Hi Guys,
Just started cleaning up & reworking my L39 ready for some nice weather. ( after a year + layup )
Am I right in thinking you need plus 100psi for retracts to lift the mains?
I remember putting plus 100 psi in when first set up but even after stripping & relubing cylinders etc still need 110 plus to get up & locked.
Is this the same for all L39's?
All the best.
John

Final install pics.
Model came out at 14.5Kg with two full body pilots fitted, I have the CG set at 155mm for now, ECU battery is in the Nose. Nothing at all in the turbine bay, kept as much forward as I could.

Looking good Seamus, I stuffed two 5000mah Nimh's right up in the nose, moved the pump and uat right forward and got away with no lead, must weigh it one of these days.

Hi John,
Dunno what's going on here I replied to you yesterday but it hasn't appeared.
Good to hear from you, using 120psi but still having the odd problem getting nosegear up, have to be very quick on t/off.
Gear doors still blowing open a bit sometimes.
Jav is great thanks, still in one piece and flies well, did you see it in a recent scale model magazine?
Best regards,
Gary.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Hi Gary,
Good to hear the Javelin is still going O.K. I really liked that plane so smooth to fly.
Decided to get my L39 back in the air but thought 100 plus psi was a bit high, nice to know it is the same for all of them.
More powerful cylinders might be the solution?
Will give it a go again with the stock units & see how it gets on.
I remember with mine that the doors on closing use to push up the mains for final lock & they would come down with 35 lbs psi.
Shows hoe heavy the legs and tyres are. Maybe worth getting lighter tyres?
All the best for now,
John
p.s. Anybody tried putting a spring in the cylinder to help with pushing the legs up or is this a no no.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Hello,
the problem with the doors is the attachment point of the air-cylinder.
Take a new one, more away from the axis of rotation of the hinges and all will be good.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
presumably they have a longer stroke?
I took a pair ultraprecision out of my personal stock.
The cylinders are thicker (11,1mm) and have more power and I had to limited the stroke with a collar.

They're the same as I used, Gary...
1.25" stroke - is slightly too long but I restricted the stroke with a small piece of tube over the shaft.

RE: What do you think about JETLEGEND L39?
Took a few weeks since it was finished but the L39 flew over the weekend and went great.
CG seems nice at about 155mm, the Merlin 140 is just perfect for this model at 14.5kg.
Only has a tiny bit of down trim with full flap and slows down well, never used the airbrake jet, the lighting kit looks well in the air and really suits a model like this with the lights on the tips.
Some gear door issues to sort but we were very pleased how the first flights went.
