Default S MAxx Runs Backwards?

Posting this for a friend (I'm a plane guy). He just did some work on his gas S Mazz (no reverse gear installed) and now it only goes backwards. Any thoughts?

Either the engine is running in reverse (wont be running very good if this is true) or one of the one-way clutches (aka one-way bearings) can be installed backwards.

Where would these bearings/clutches be found?

Or the diffs are installed upside down.  I did that on my Revo the first time I reassembled it.

SMaxx has only 1 diff (rear), it is installed upside down.

If the engine were running backwards the OWB in the transmission would not allow it to move at all.

I didnt think about that or the diff being upside down. I thought most models with diffs external to the transmission couldnt usually be installed upside down... Maybe I'm wrong..

All Maxx trucks (T/E/S) have diffs that can be easily be installed upside down.

It is a very common mistake with those models.

Even the Revo models have diffs that can be istalled incorrectly, they have an UP stamped on the diff housing and it still happens

Yes it does!  When I did it, I looked for the up markings, aligned it properly, then put it down for a second to grab another part.  Inverted it without realizing it, and presto, reverse gearing!

Here's the kit to make it 4X4 part#5191X.

Also check diff installation of the front. The other common mistake is to flip it and the wheels spin in opposite directions.
