RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
She is coming along, seemed to have slowed down some, due to work and other activities.
Worked on the eyelets on the bottom of the fuselage. I used solar tex, ironed two pieces together, marked the centre line as well as the location for the eyelets.
eyelets are in and the solar tex is attached to the bottom. Ran some black lacing through, will look good against the turquoise colour.

Hi Craig
From reading some past threads I understand you have busa sopwith pup!
I just bought a framed up busa sopwith pup for 85 dollars[X(]. The cowl looks like a lobster pot and is small in diameter and looks ugly. I don't think it came with the busa kit and was wonding if the busa cowl is scale and has the right lines. Should i go with a mick reeves cowl ?
Thanks tom

Thats a good question Tom
I found with the Balsa USA cowl, it was fine for my Pup.
It looked pretty good, and was happy how it turned out.

Nice detailing. Thanks for the pictures to help me finish detailing my gtm cockpit. I'm having trouble finding a 1/3 scale full body pilot to fit...have you ordered one? Also I highly recommend the Ziroli dummy engine. It is heavy so don't order the full engine just four cylinders.

Tom
I have my complete pup build on here, think its on page 10 right now.
I have not gotten a pilot yet, will need to track one down for sure before I secure the seatbelts so they are a proper fit.
I have changed a few things within the cockpit, and am proceeding slow.
Rudder is half painted, still need to cover and paint the ailerons, getting close.
The engine looks great.........will do something like that after I have flown it for a bit, always something to do.
What are you using for power, and how is the performance?
Craig.

Thanks Del, its your fault I have this kit and its a good thing, thanks.
More progress, painted the bottom of the fuse, made the bottom wing cover, it is also painted and drying at the moment.
Put in the black lacing between the eyelets.
The "To Do List" is getting smaller and smaller

Del,
Have been following this thread for the last two weeks, enjoying it way too much. Keep up the great work.
I have a couple of questions
Where do you get your covering material you used on the DR-1? Can't find it anywhere.
Also has anyone tried bamboo for the Ailerons? I am building Protor's JN-4 Jenny and he used bamboo for the wing tips and Elev, and Rudd.

Howdy Ray,
Thank you, glad you're enjoying the thread.
I used the Nelsons Lite-Fab, I heard that he retired so don't know if any of his things are still available. (Maybe someone out there knows)??
Now I have also heard that the Lite-Fab is the same thing as Solar Tex and other iron on fabrics, all made the same place??
I have never used Bamboo for control surfaces (I have the Proctor DVII kit that has the bamboo in it also, but I haven't built it yet),
so I couldn't tell you how it will work out. I really like laminating those parts.
If anyone out there has used bamboo for these things, how did it work out?? Main thing, how well does it hold it's shape, is it pretty much
warpage free??
Del

Del,
Thanks for the quick answer. I have used Solortex and stits, found stits labor intenstive and toxic using poly-tone and tac.
Pocket book will hold me to the 1/4 scale DR-1 when it comes out in early summer. ( Glenn told me his target is early summer last week.)
I have really enjoyed this thread and your work is top grade.

Del,
It's me again just was seeing if there was a way to get away from the metal Ail tips.
Also has anybody ever balanced the flight controls on these models? I am a retired Aircraft Mechanic and have worked on some of these fab covered aircraft. ( That's where I got to work with Stits.)

Do yourself a favor and throw that bamboo away!
They will warp like no tomorrow, trust me. I have proctor planes hanging, the surfaces are a mess that the bamboo was used on. Go to Home Depot, they have 2 and 4 ft. bass wood stock, rip it thin and use that to laminate with. I will be using either bass or maple strips on the 1/2 scale. you can cut what ever size you need and it's very cheap!

RE: Glenn Torrence (GTM) 1/3 Scale Dr.1 Build Along
It has been a while since I have posted on this thread.
With the passing of Del on the weekend, have felt kind of uneasy to post on his thread that he started. I know with his love of Fokkers, he would want the thread to carry on.
The rest of my build will be in honor of Del, who started me on this project and has been a great help along the way.
Thanks Del for all your assistance and inspiration.
I ordered a pilot form Jim Reeves, and had it in a week. He looks pretty good, and happy with him.
I had to put him in the cockpit, and beside the plane for a few pics.
As of late, the ailerons have been covered, turqouis has been painted, and it still needs on more coat of olive streaking. Then the white can be applied, followed by the black iron crosses.
I will post more as I progress.

I agree, Del would want this thread to continue. A great way to honor him.
Del and Miss Mary with the Dr1 at the 2008 Hoosier Dawn Patrol.
He was a gentleman and truly good guy. He will be missed.
His memorial service is Thursday at 6:00 PM, just N of Cincinnati. If anyone would like details, feel free to PM me.

Iron crosses are on the top wing.
Still need to do the white on the aileron, then I can finish the small black portion.

Inner portion of the ailerons are now painted white.
Will let it cure for several days then apply the remaining black for the iron crosses.

Hi Greg,
I like what you are doing by keeping this thread going.
Your build is out standing, I only knew Del for a short time and talked to him twice, threw this thread. As I told him, I was enjoying it way too much and will keep on enjoying it
Keep up the good work.
