G'day Rossco
the motor that I used is a rcgf 15cc using a 15x4w apc prop flys great at that
I cut virtuly nothing out of the cowel I had to cut the engine mount box back 20mm but that was not a problem
the cog was set at the main spar and I found this to be spot on I mounted my rud and ele servos down the back
and then I didn't have to add any weight made hatches underneath for access to my rx and rud and ele servos
here are some pics if you need any more info let me know
cheers John

Hi John thanks for the photos, sure is a neat instillation. Tell me how much extra power do you have available for general flying as I am trying to gauge weather I go DL 20 or 30 cc motor for aerotowing up to 4 meters. My electric 6S setup works well but turn around time with batteries is the biggest problem.
Thanks again Rossco.

Hi Rossco I would say you should be ok with a 15cc I only fly around at 1/2 throttle
at full power you will climb vertical with a fine pitch prop keep your pitch fine you get better climb
and a bit slower forward speed

So, it's been asked before, but I have not seen it confirmed to have been done. Anyone out there that did install a flat twin in this bird? I am doubting between a Saito 60 or a Saito 90.

Go for the twin .90 it has about the same power as a single cylinder Saito .72, which is adequate for the Pawnee.

Do you have more detail pictures of your gear? Did you build a spring system also? Do you have drawings, or even better, produce a few since the weather is wet anyway [8D]

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Guys, I just had one of the most terrifying flights with my one year old Piper Pawnee. Mine is equipped with a OS 70 4S and to tell you the truth, since the beginning I've found that it will fly nicely ONLY if wind speed is very low, but flying it at speeds faster than 5-8 MPH it becomes very erratic and twitchy. Yesterday I had about 8 MPH winds, clear sky. I took off and from that moment the nightmare began, flying up and down, from one side to another, etc. I had to land immediately and no apparent problems were found. CG is good, controls are as per instructions, etc. Am I the only one having issues with this rather nice and excellent construction quality plane?
Thanks

Thanks John; I remember I had some issues with the CG at the beginning and yes, I had to put some weight in the front. I willl check that out again. At times I feel that it is under powered, or maybe the propeller size / pitch not the correct one. As said before, if wind conditions are perfect, no down elevator is required to think that it is tail heavy for instance.

I use a 13-6 Evolution prop and have just enough (barely) power to pull out of inverted to half an outside loop. My plane is 3 years old and is a bit heavier from multiple repairs to the fuselage mid-section from bad landings early on.

Very strange. I fly my Pawnee when it's too windy to fly anything else. It is so stable in the wind. I fly electric and mine is on the heavy side with the CG at 2.75" In my opinion, you also need to prop it up some. I am using a Power 60 which - I think - is close to what you are using, and a 16 x 10 prop. Again, I fly electric and really don't know if it translates.

My Pawnee (OS .46) is also fine in the wind with plenty of power, and one of the easiest landing planes I have. I'm wondering if you have CoG problems. Too far back and it can be fine under good conditions, and a light touch on the controls, but will tend to pitch and yaw badly when excessive control/overcorrection is needed (eg in windy conditions). Flaps will normally make it worse. Try an inch forward to see if this helps.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Thanks for your suggestions. I came back to my workshop and made an inspection of what could happen and I found the CG to be quite head heavy. Had to move the battery and a bit more of weight to the back and now it is just as the book says (3 1/8 "). Also, checking on the propeller size, it was actually too small ( 12 x 6) so I am changing for a 13 x 8. I hope this will help me to really appreciate the nice manners of this plane.

I had no idea of such a bulletin Harry, thanks!!. I'll get back to the workshop again tonight and repeat the check up. Travelling for a few days abroad and after that, weather permitting here in Aberdeen Scotland, another test flight again.
Thanks

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Just thought I would get this thread back towards the front, currently bashing one of my Pawnees and installing a 26cc gasser in it so I can tow some bigger banners than we're towing with the Super Tiger 90 plane.
I started off by gutting almost everything aft of the engine box where it extends into the fuselage then cut the engine box off forward of the firewall and made a new one with 3 degrees of right and 3 degrees down thrust to mount the engine to. Next I made a new tray for a Fiji bottle fuel tank then moved the radio and BEC/regulator to a new tray under the cockpit and finally moved the rudder and elevator servos to the back of the plane. Iwill also be mounting the batteries in the tail but that's where I have had them since day one.
This particular airframe has about 300 flights on it to date and other than replacing the landing gear at least a dozen times, 1 wingtip, 1 wing tube, and 1 elevator half it has held up really well. I got tired of the gear ripping out everytime I caught a hole in the grass or dropped it in hard so the belly from the wing tube forward is 1/4" aircraft ply and the gear is an aluminum set I found in the bargain bin at the LHS.
Here's some pictures of the build, the switches for the radio and ignition our now under the instrument panel inside the plane accessed through the hatch. I was going to run a servo for the choke but decided to save that channel for smoke and instead ran a manual choke pull.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Just finishing my winter build. Piper Pawnee 40 but looks more like a 60.
I made several modifications that I will share with you in pictures.
Modified engine mount to fit YS FZ115S four stroke engine.
Mounted rudder servo in rear of fuse.
Added two tow hooks. One on top for sailplanes. One underneath for banners.
Modified 1/3 and 1/5 scale Piper Cub landing gear for stability and a similar look to scale Pawnee gear.
Replaced fuel tank with 16oz. Also added 24oz. tank for longer flights and towing service.
Installed a Spektrum Telemetry System to monitor: Airspeed, Engine RPM, engine temp., Onboard voltage, Radio frequency glitches.
Final Dry Weight: 12 Lbs.

Steve, what a great job you have done with your Pawnee. I like the magazines he will read during his journeys!!. I would like to know more information about the telemetry system please.....
Thanks
Thanks

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
The telemetry module is from Spektrum: www.horizonhobby.com/browse/productgrid/telemetry-10001025
Small light weight module. Plenty of sensors to measure just about anything you want.
The newer Spektrum transmitters have telemetry receivers build in. You can just scroll to the telemetry window while you are testing or in the air.

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
It's really cool to see that folks are still having fun with their Pawnees. Some of the mods that are being done are great and innovative.
I also spent some of the cold weather months working on my Pawnee.
My mods are geared more toward appearance than function, since I'm happy with the way mine flys and performs. Obviously, I went to a more scale color choice, added some scale lighting, and 'scaled out' my pilot a little more. I also swapped in a TT black anodized spinner.
I still need to finish things up a bit and add a landing light (controlled from my radio), and check my setup and CG to be sure that it's ready to go.
Here's to another fun and successful flying season.
Cheers! BH

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
very nice BH51, i never liked the Hanger 9 original colour scheme and yet to find a Pawnee with this scheme. The original Piper schemes are the best. I need to pull my finger out and repair mine after a cart wheel incident due to a strong cross wind gust. Tore the nose off. Will be a good time to strenghthen the area up also. The Pawnee is my favourite of all my RC aircraft followed by my ST models DG1000, then again i am a glider pilot and have been around Pawnees all my life as they are used as full sized glider tow planes so am probably a bit biased there.

Very very nice BH!
Is it a complete re-cover or did you peel off all that wasn't white and add your own trim?
(I'm not too familiar with the model and have no idea if/what can be peeled off and what is an actual covering).

RE: Hangar 9 40 Size Piper Pawnee!!!
Thanks for the nice words guys. I still have a few things to finish up before it's ready to go, but I'm looking forward to getting in some more flights on this one.
PP235, I've got a soft spot for the Pawnee also. I really like AG planes.
flyallday, I saw the TBM offering a while back. Looks like it'll be a nice plane.
EF, I peeled of everything that wasn't white. I think that it was pipierpawnee235 that did a nice tutorial on the mods a while back in this thread.
It wasn't a huge job, but does require some work. Well worth it IMHO.
Here's a few pics from my changes.
Cheers!
