Losi 8 2.0 RTR is really the only RTR worth considering if you really want to race.. Spektrum radio, starterbox, etc..
If you want something more for bashing, maybe a Hyper 7 because it's so cheap and known for being tough, and then upgrade the servos, and later whatever else. The Hyper is probably less competitive racing, but therefore tougher..

RE: looking to get into 1/8 scale
I'll add:
Mugen
The Car
OFNA (Hong Nor) X2 (truggy)
Kyosho
Out of the box RTR though, Losi for the Spektrum radio. With ANY RTR though, I'd switch out the servos straight away, especially for racing. I would also check all the screws, blue loc-tite the metal to metal ones, change the diff and shock oils out.
If you're planning on racing, head down to your local track and see what everyone is running there, ask questions, get advice, etc. Local parts support is something to consider as well, unless you don't mind waiting for the brown truck.
Good luck and have fun

I'll agree, I had an early RTR buggy, I believe it was the 8ight. Very well built, great engine, everything nice, ended up very competitive on the track too !!

RE: looking to get into 1/8 scale
If you are a electric guy like me than i would probably shoot for the Vorza. A friend of mine has it and it is a kick ass buggy, pretty much out of the box. It is fast with 4 cell and when you want to have a rocket throw 6 cells in there. I just finished up my Associated RC8.2e with a Tekin 2600KV. If you dont mind spending a little more than the Vorza go with the RC 8.2e. Im really enjoying mine so far. It looks and handles really nice!

RE: looking to get into 1/8 scale
Hobao have just released a new Hyper 7. No more e-clips, sealed battery box, new body, proper servos and many smaller updates. Well worth looking at.
(get the Asian/European edition if you can, comes with the new 3 port .21, much better than that crappy Macstar .28)
