Old rc plane anyone know?
This is a large old plane with a 74 inch wingspan. The fuselage and wings are a light balsa frame covered with about 1/8 inch thick styrofoam. It has a lot of plastic also especially the edging around the wings. Anyone with a good guess to the maker and age of this airplane. Im hoping the styrofoam is a good clue.

A manufacturer called EZ/Pilot used to marked a series of ARFs similar to that in construction. I don't remember that particular model, though.

"Looks like it's loosely based on the planform of a Citabria (full scale) "
Trim pattern says Decathalon. Same thing as a Citabria on steroids.

Tail feather and wing tip outlines don't look Citabria/Decathelon to me, more Cub like. But, Hobby Lobby and Indy did market some ARFs that had a thin pre printed foam skin over balsa structure. I have the .46 size P-51. I may have the RC magazines of that era and will try to find if other planes were offered in that construction.

Here are some review words from RC Groups for the Mustang I have. It looks like it was Hobby Shack, not Hobby Lobby. Still don't know about the "Cub" though.

The EZ Mustang was the first ARF fighter I had, bought it in 1988. Hobby People sold them (was Hobby Shack back then) for $249. They had a blue-colored paint scheme, a "Dallas Doll" version with natural aluminum finish, and a Reno racer modified P-51 called "Dago Red". EZs were made by OK Models in Japan. OK also made the same P-51 as the Dallas Doll version and sold it through Indy Models under the name Lion Models. I had one of those, too, and they were exactly the same plane as the EZs except they sold for $199.
I even wrote an article at the time for Scale RC Modeler magazine showing how to add flaps to the plane.
Quality was superb- this was back when ARFs were made in Japan and not by slave labor in China. Of course, now we get cheaper ARFs from China and the quality is actually pretty good.
The wingspan should be 56 inches and they fly on a .45 engine but fly better on a .65 engine"

And a little more construction detail:
"...The fuselage has an inner wood frame with wood formers and the wings have wood ribs and spars. It is all covered with a triple-layer-laminated skin with highly detailed graphics and a fuelproof, clear mylar outer layer. Plastic is used in several places such as the top half of the fuselage, wing fairings, wing tips, one-piece cowl, and vertical stabilizer root cover...."

I was thinking something along the cub or declathon line. It supprised me there are no wing struts on a large plane like this. Its rreally well built. Im currently doing a little cosmetic and mechanic work preparing it for flight.

Right. Thinking a little more, the Citabria/Decathalon were square cut, not rounded.
