RE: L-19 Bird Dog?
Leisure RC Models carried a 72" short kit at one time, but now this looks questionable. If that size is preferable you might contact them directly at:

RE: L-19 Bird Dog?
I will be starting a build of the new Hostetler L-19 in the next few days. Purchased plans from Wendell at the Joe Nall. Also purchased a laser cut full kit from National Balsa. On first inspection the National Balsa kit looks very good.
Hostetler's L-19 is 116 inch span... he says 20-22 lbs... just right! Specs 38 - 62cc and shows G-62 on the plans.

RE: L-19 Bird Dog?
After study of the Hostetler plan I find that it will need changes in at least two areas to meet my needs. Since I already have the plan and the full kit I will have to do it. The first, and easiest change is a re-work of the flap hinges / mechanism. Wendell definitely went with a sport scale, easy to build design here but it negates one of the neatest features on the dog, Fowler flaps.
Secondly, and likewise, for ease of building he took some liberties with the forward fuselage. Building to his design will result in a box structure in the lower cockpit and huge, non-scale bulkheads in the upper cabin area. This ruins one of the most distinctive features of the Bird Dog, the big open cabin area. This won't do. Re-work here is a little more complicated. I think I will have to build a jig for the front half of the fuse and attach the rear half, from the window back, as built from plans.

I have built and flown both the 1/4 and 1/5 scale L-19's from Vailly aviation and can highly recomend them. PCK has a full kit for either and the build is very easy, especially if you purchase the photo pack that shows some of the difficult parts of construction.

Did your National Balsa kit come with instructions? I too ordered a set of plans from Hostetler and am planning on ordering a full-wood kit from National Balsa in the near future. The plans are huge, so I was wondering on where to get a set of instructions. Keep us posted on your progress and good luck with your build.

No instructions come the the kit. This is standard. You just have to go by the plans and Wendell Hostetler is available if you cannot figure something out.
I will be starting with the fuselage sometime soon. This is the hardest part because of the modifications I want to make (discussed above). I will post pictures, etc. Not sure when I will get started but hope to just after the Nall, so late May.

Thanks for the info. Please keep your build thread going! It will be very helpful for future and not so experienced builders like myself. Pictures "say a thousand words" too. Gook luck and I look forward to seeing the pictures. Many Thanks!

RE: L-19 Bird Dog?
I just bought a 1/5th scale Bird Dog and it looks a build from Vailly plans, i'll be looking to get a cowl for it, but I need to know exact lenghts for both wing struts and also what size wheels should be on this model?
