Clearcoat and Stain ?
I "acquired" a rather nicely crafted balsa covered unfinished plane at the Auction at the club's swap meet a few weeks ago. It's so meticulously constructed... I really hate to cover it. Has anyone just stained and clear coated a plane ? If so... what did you use ? I am going to use a power 10 eflite motor in it. Just to give you an idea on the size. As I said.. even the wings are sheeted balsa. I want to keep it light but make it sharp and durable. I am not the "glass and epoxy" type... I surely don't wanna ruin this plane experimenting on it.

The problem with trying to stain a completed airframe, is that the glue used will have seeped into the grain of the wood at the glue joints, and NOT take stain, like the rest of it will.

Just look at it close and you can tell if the glue is going to be a problem. Being electric you don't really need a clear coat. I would try one of the Minwax combo stain and poly. For just a good clear coat clear dope is good. You can thin t to keep th wight down. One of the joys of electric is the ease of not having to worry about the nitro on the finish.
