Default OS 33cc gas engine

Has anyone user / reviewed this engine yet? It is 120g heavier than the DLE 30 but has marginally more displacement

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBCKA&P=7

It was supposed to come out in August but has been delayed to October

I have not ran this engine yet. But have seen this thing run (very impressive and sounds great) Aaron Bates who is a team pilot for 3dhobbyshop had one at are field the other day mounted on a 74 inch edge. This thing pulled it around like a rag doll.. Also comes with a pitts muffler and has a very nice sound to it..

$140 X 3payments = a PTE36R at $280= more power/bang for the buck.

MTK has reviewed this engine here on RCU. DO a search. The engine is superior to the DLE 30 or any other mass producted 30-38cc on the market.

Is the OS 33 made in China or Japan or Korea? Brian

Does it have a standard reliable ignition, or some one-off specialty created for OS that will cost more than the engine to replace when it dies?

Ignition module: $89.99
Sensor: 33.99 (must be a really, really good one)
total: $123.98

See, only about double the cost of "normal".

Thats one reason I don't buy OS products look at replacement parts and you will see they cost quite a bit more than other engine makes. Here is an example,
O.S. Carburetor GT33 169.00, O.S. Crankcase GT33 84.99
Carburetor Complete DLE-30cc 34.99, DLE Engines Cylinder DLE-30cc 39.99 as you can see parts for the OS run quite a bit more than DLE.

The CDI for the OS is very good, but no better than the RCExcl CDI modules I have used in the past. The 33 puts out a lot of HP, turning large loads, larger than most any other 30cc class engine I've played with, especially on a tuned pipe....The 30cc class engines I have evaluated are the SAP180HP, ZDZ40F3A, Mintor 38cc and am in process of evaluating the PTE36R and DLE30, and a friend is evaluating the RCGF32

One item of note on the 33GT is it will start far easier with a starter such as the Dynatron on 24 volts. The stock CDI requires a minimum starting rpm to fire, a built in "safety" feature (don't ask me what the safety feature is all about, I don't get that) It has more compression than the others so make sure the engine is wet and the prop is moved back before engaging the Dynatron; it will need a running start in other words. Good luck with it...

There was a learning curve with mine and I had an early break in the backplate that Hobbyservices repaired on warranty. But now, after some 10 hours of operation, I love the absolute brute power of this thing, its great mid range response and large popeller hauls (how about a 20x10 at 7300 rpm? On pipe tho.... expect a 500 rpm drop on muffler alone)

Needing a starter is a turn off for me.

I have two of the OS GT33 engines. I have always started them by hand. Mine have not needed a starter. The trick is to flip the prop from mid way between cylinder compression. This way the prop is moving past the hall sensor with sufficient RPM.

OS recommends a starter in their instructions, but don't misconstrue the starter comment...It doesn't absolutely have to have one to get going. I start it by hand often, but I use the starter to get going quickly...

Nevertheless, the engine is not as simple to start by hand as my SAP180HP or my DLE's are, at least not yet

I have seen where some people have had problems starting the engine but it just came down to procedure. MAY MTK know the thread but there was a couple of different threads on it. i will see i can find them for you.

I would think that if the engine is choked, it will start. Most I read had a problem with it running backward. Anyway, I have a DLE20 running now and first time in the day I start it on the field, I always use a starter till it pops and subsequently, it will start by hand every time

The OS GT33 is a ringed engine with a liner. That would be 'safer' that the DLEs which have no liner. So, God forbid, should you run it lean and wear the liner, cost of replacement will be lower- in the DLE you replace the whole engine casting

Also, for the same reason the OS would produce more grunt

I read in some thread that the ignition module on the OS is custom-made by Rcexcl, the starting speed was OS' requirement. I would think that a Rcexcl module would work just fine

All of these replacement cases are, ofcourse, if you mess with the engine, think MTX will agree

stop spreading this myth ameyam. Youd do not replace the whole engine casting with a DLE, just the cylinder casting. Your crankcase is unaffected.
Also you really have to run that engine very lean and for quite some time to do serious irreversible damage to a petrol engine. The fuel has alower solvency then alcohol so it still provides some protection.

I have never heard of anyone killing a gasoline engine through running it lean

Well, the cylinder for a DLE 30 from Tower is $39.95. And the OS 33 cylinder liner is $67.99 if you actually were able to destroy one.
