Default OS BGX-1 Glow to Gas Conversion (Yeah!) Thanks Max

ST Engines out of Mexico has new glow to gas conversion and I got one for the BGX-1. Here's what's in the kit.
Here's the original engine.
Here's how it's done.
1. Remove the hub and carb. Keep the"O" ring for the Walbro carb.
2. Remove the glow plug. Kit uses a 1/4-32 spark plug.
3. Remove back plate, drill 1/8 hole and tap for the supplied pressure fitting for the Walbro carb.
4. Install the carb adapter, carb and sensor ring. The instructions show the correct location.
5. Connect the RCEXL ignition.
6. Connect you battery, add prop, gas, and enjoy!
7. I used a Zinger 18x6-10 prop. Here's the proff!

The conversion process is VERY EASY!!! There are less than 12 steps to do it. The "hardest part" was drilling a tapping the 1/8 pressure fitting. I had the honor of being the 1st one to do this in the USA! . Thanks Max. I had to add some flat washers to my pressure fitting as I used the crankcase mount which is thinner than the regular back plate. I informed Max and he's making the necessary adjustments . Having the timing ring preset was also a plus. From start to finish takes less than 30 minutes. After choking the carb and 3 flips it was ready. 2 flips later and it running! Tuning the carb was an adventure, but after reading some posts here on RCU it was easy as well. As you can see in the pics I got it pretty close to where I want it to be. This was my first glow to gas conversion and the conversion kit from Max is awesome. I plan to put this engine in my Team Duster 1/6 Air Tractor A502-B . Thanks Max!

Pretty good timing. I just got a BGX on a plane I recently bought. I was gonna sell the BGX cause I dont need a big glow engine with a comode for a carb. For that price, I may just keep it and buy that conversion kit. I've been watching Max for a couple of years now and am impressed with his work. He's pretty handy and ingeneous.

Edwin,

You'll love this conversion. You end up with a light weight, gas burning power house engine that no longer costs you and arm and a leg to operate! Oh, it sounds sweet too!

I'm sure I'll go for it. Need to catch up on some other finances and house maitenance first. I live rural, with all these fires around us, I want to upgrade the booster pump to my wells water system. 10gal/min aint enough if you have to fight fires. Found a 20gal/min pump and need to get that installed asap. With the BGX converted I wont have to change the engine mount or anything else, sweet.

These conversions are neat, and Max does very nice work. However, the engines were designed for cooler running methanol (glow fuel) and more oil. So keep this in mind when running them on gasoline. Don't advance the timing too far, don't ever run them too lean, use enough good quality oil, and make sure you have a good cooling system setup on your plane. If you keep these things in mind, you probably will have no problems.

Max is doing some very nice work, and it will be interesting to see what he comes up with in the future.

In the Engine Conversions Forum Max converts an OS 120 FS and an ASP 180 FS from glow to gas. If he doesn't have what you're for contact him as he is coming out with new conversion kits. Hope this helps.

I was his first customer and he was outstanding. His conversion performed as advertised for me. My BGX-1 on gas is awesome! I am not aware of any problems from anyone. Hope this helps.

I converted my OS 1.60 to gas 6 months ago using Max's kit. Really happy with the results - turns a 18"x8" Bolly at 7,600 RPM with a Pitts muffler. Use 10% synthetic, 26 degrees advance (conservative) and it is now more reliable and far cheaper to run. Runs HOT though so I have removed the cowl from my spacewalker.
Maybe at a guess 2 or 3 hundred RPM down on methanol. A tuned pipe would more than restore that lost power.
I have just received another kit from Max for a BGX and plan to convert a OS 1.08 and a ST4500.
Well done Max.

My dealing's with Max at ST Engines was not so wonderful.
After paying for the BGX-1 gas conversion kit it took 3 months to recieve it.
He did not respond to repeated email requests for additional info regarding the
order.
I had given up when suddenly I get an email telling me that the kit had been hung up in
customs.
What I have recieved is not up to standard either.

The ignition kit looks new but everything else is used. Probably a return.
The carb looks like it came off of a lawn mower, was rebuilt and shipped out.
It is not legal to sell used parts as new. But what do you want from Mexico.

Very disatisfied and will never do business with Max again.

I do not see this report as being that unusual.

There are many times that cross border customs holds things up. This happens at the Canadian border as well. Things will disappear from the face of the earth for a couple weeks waiting on customs.

Many of the modification write ups on the Internet have utilized rebuilt used carbs or parts taken from other used engines.

Be prepared for possible "not new" parts as this is part of the game when modifying engines.

Also be prepared for customs hang ups anytime you ship something across the border.

Your chances with customs is often better with used/rebuilt parts than new ones.

I waited for several weeks for my BGX kit. The majority of the wait was caused during shipment.

As regards the used, rebuilt, carb, I'd have prefered a new carb, however, I belive the cost of the
conversion kit would have gone up, considerably. All in all, I am happy with what I received.

Hello Max,

I have 2 recommendations for future business for you.

#1 Communicate with your customers. This is probably the most important.
I sent you many, many emails requesting a status on my order and you did not reply.

#2 I was expecting all new parts and was very dissapointed when that was not the case.
You may want to update your web site so as to set appropriate expectations.
There are literally hundreds of Walbro carb models available so using a carb that was scavenged from a
lawn mower seems pretty low tech to me.

From a technical stand point

The hub face is crushed...probably vise damage when the hole was drilled for the magnet.
The adapter plate groove for the re-used o-ring was far to deep and I wound up having
to make a paper gasket between the plate and manifold inlet.

I have set the timing at 28 degrees btds as a start point which was not documented in your instructions.
So far I have not been able to get a start but will continue fidling with the carb.

Regards
ohanapoi
