RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I would definitely recommend the brushless over the brushed version, there is no comparison in power and speed. I have a Mini Revo and Mini Rally and bought both used so you can save alot that way. I've had no issues with rust. Just do routine maintenance and there shouldn't be any problems. I am not sure of the exact ride height difference of the rally and slash. But I do know the rally sits much lower, possibly 1/2" or more. As the tire/wheel diameter are smaller and also the shock springs are smaller. I have seen on another forum someone used hpi cup body on a mini rally with very little fender trimming. It was a Porsche body, so it is possible. Other than that the slash bodies will work on the rally. Also Pro-line makes a Ford Focus body now.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
KBusch, I'm hoping you didnt over pay in getting the system at your LHS, when eBay has them for cheaper and brand new with castle warranty - if you did, don't worry. Chalk this one up as a lesson learned.
Now on to your real question: the castle system you purchased is a better system than your stock, but that depends on if you know how to set it up properly. Gearing and battery output is crucial, as I have had to learn valuable lessons in those departments... The castle set up gives you additional options for tuning with the castle link system such as throttle and motor brake curves along with punch control to name a few. You have to take into consideration the added weight of your system, the battery output and the gearing before you assume you wasted money on a castle system. The stock VXL system is actually a great system for the casual, no hassle rc driver. As long as you abide by the instructions from Traxxas, your rc will be plenty fast. If you must go faster, then you need to get smart with your castle software and start trying out gear combinations and some good lipos. There are a few on here that are very smart and knowledgeable of the castle systems. One thing I'd like to point out about the castle setup, you will notice cooler temps.
if you are trying to fincd a top speed forxf your benchmark I recommend a radar gun to clock your speed or you can do the old school trick of measuring out a set distance and have a stop watch handy. That method will give you feet traveled per second and the rest is just math.
Have fun experimenting.
Joe

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
TheDriftingNarwhal - I don't think rusting is an issue unless you get it real wet and don't dry it. It does sit lower because there are spacers in the shocks that limit travel. The issue of brush vs, brushless is a personal one. if you think you're going to like the additional speed later you might as well go brushless now. If you're just out having fun and not racing it won't make a lot of difference. Bodies are little difficult. Eventually, I think that Traxxas will have more of its bodies available. Proline and Protoform make bodies for the car. It's 180mm wide so most of the M-chassis bodies don't work. McAllister makes an 18th scale COT Impala,#258, works according to another forum I follow.

Ok so last sunday I bought my Kyle Busch. I must say I love it. But yesterday I decided I wanted more speed, so I hit up my LHS and bought the 1/10th castle sct 3800kv set up. I was told it would be a lot faster then the stock brushless system. Well Im kind of disappointed it really doesnt seem any faster, I have a brushess 1/16 Slash that looks just as fast if not faster then the Kyle Busch with the SCT, I used the same pinion off of the Slashes stock VXL system.
What do you guys think I should try?
ORIGINAL: KBusch
Yeah I think the stock pinion in the 1/16 Slash is a 31-32t. And the spur im running isa 45T. Should I try a bigger pinion and leave the 45T spur?
Im starting the LHSmislead me in to buying something that wasnt what I was looking for.

I'm also pretty sure what the guy at your local hobby shop meant was that the castle BL system he sold you shoulld be faster than the stock brushed system it came with - but ultimately, it comes down to knowing what you're buying (which means doing some research before laying out your cash) instead of relying on what some kid behind the counter is telling you just to sell parts.

I've been considering buying a Mini, and have a few questions.
How does it hold up against rust?
What are the ride height differences between the mini slash and mini rally?
Is there any way to fit M-Chassis or Cup racer bodies on it?
Are there any other good bodies besides the Team Blugroove Porsche?
It the brushless worth it? I would try to buy one used anyway but nonetheless?
Thats all, thanks!

As far as your rust concerns go, all traxxass manuals (that are also available on that site) have a maintenance section (pg. 19) that warns about "extended wet usage." Frankly, you need to consider that while most hobby grade RC cars and trucks have a lot of plastic parts (and most traxxass models offer a bit of waterproof protection, for the electronics ONLY) that no RC is totally waterproof as they make use of a lot of metal parts - and ALL metal rusts.
Body-selection wise is what led to me selling my own. After buying it a year ago, and additional models coming out since then, IMHO traxxass dropped the ball bigtime about coming out with replacement bodies. While the aftermarket, Proline/Protofprm (same company), has finally come out with a body, there are really few if any bodies that are already out there that fit (but this is because traxxass chose to make a scale that previously didn't exist). After months and months I got tired of looking at the ragedy beat up stock body, and rtr paint, and after months and months of teasers and promises (and new rtr models) the release of the replacement bodies kept getting pushed back repeatedly so I dumped my highly modified Rally and will never buy another traxxass product. While I tend to think that traxxass does a good job of supplying new cars, to rtr customers, I think they do a piss poor job of satisfying their old customers that want to keep up their cars' appearance.
Brushless is WAY better than Brushed, longer runtime, faster speeds, less maintenance.
Sure, buy used - there are a ton of the Rally's out there looking for good homes.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
if you check RC Tech,Hobby Talk, or here you won't find a lot of rally's for sale. It was a very popular class at the local parking lot races, sometimes out numbering the SC trucks. For me the the thing that made the biggest change was the Hot Racing sway bar set. It allowed me drive the car more like a touring car. The Hot Racing sway bar set is too expensive for what it is, but it works. My biggest problem with my rally is leaking shocks.

As far as your "leaking shocks" complaint - sure the stock plastic POS ones leak, all plastic shocks leak compared to alloy models. Then again all shocks leak and need to be refilled/maintained, but there are quite a few aftermarket options that leak less than the stockers.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
The Hobbytown in my area holds parking lot races from May through Sept. for all classes. SC trucks are the most popular class, and the mod SCT and 4WD SCT run in the open off road class. Tamiya Minis are one of the most popular cars and classes in the world. I have an M05 and I had a lot of fun racing it at the same parking lot races. They are great. I have had plastic shocks from HPI and Tamiya that don't leak nearly as much as these do. The shocks on the Slash tend to leak a little and the shock caps may be the issue on both the Slash and Rally. I am going to get some alloy shocks. I haven't decided whether I will get the Traxxas or the after market brand found on Ebay and some other sites.

I've been racing my rally on carpet. It's a lot of fun. I've been using Tamiya 24mm type "A" tires front and rear, Hot Racing stiffest sway bars front and rear, black springs and 100 wt shock oil and the car drives well.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
anyone with problems stripping servo gears?
there's an easy 5 min. fix, no extra parts or money, tool came with the truck... my second set of servo gears has lasted a long time now, and still going... probably will outlast the servo... LOL
video is uploading to youtube right now, video is of a MERV but same steering setup... on youtube my channel/name is axelsfolks

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I've been told by my local hobby shop that the newer servos in the 1/16 scale Traxxas vehicles are not as a good as the servos that came with the 1/16 scale servos that came with the original 1/16 Revos and Slashes. My rally car is a 1/16 Slash converted to a rally car. I've had no trouble with it.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
That might be true. I've had my Merv for almost 4 years now and the original servo is still going strong. A friend of mine just got a Mini Summit for Xmas and the servo has already gone out. Traxxas is sending him a new one but it was only ran a few times.

I talked to the guys at the hobby shop did not recommend replacing a 1/16 scale Traxxas servo with another Traxxas servo, based on their experience.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Hi...
I'm new to brushless, first time I saw one of this 1/16 I fall in love (I have some 1/8 nitro)...so I bought one (Kyle B...jus because it was a bit cheaper)...
After reading th 14 pages I have some questions....Hope you could help me with some advice...
1) I just bought a savage XS...I read that the vapor pro isn't very good for the XS, so I bought MMP and a CC motor, so I have the motor and the electronics of the savage...if I use this in the KB truck would be an upgrade?
2) I use the truck on asphalt and concrete, I would like to know what I could do to improve the handling and stability (already have high grip tires)...shocks?
3) I use this truck on asphalt and concrete, what parts should I start looking to make it a bit stronger?
Is there any news about matt proyect???....
Thanks!!!!!!

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
Some racers run the 1/16 scale rally cars in practice mode and they do very well. Outside I run black springs in the front, brown springs in the rear, 60 wt. oil in the front, 50 wt. oil in the rear, Hot Racing sway bars front and rear, HPI x-patterns all around, and I keep a battery in both battery boxes to balance the car. I only connect one battery. I also run a smaller pinion.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I bought a rally rolling chassis, and tried to buy a Mustang body but they were none avail or ridiculously over priced with shipping.
But I found something else really good. Along with wheels from my TC4, I got this. Just too bad I was in too much of a hurry to paint and mount the body. I will try to get another one soon.

I use small two cell lipos made for this size of the car without any problem. I only use one battery at a time. Although, I keep a battery on each side of the car for balance. I run HPI X-Patterns in parking lot racing and HPI carpet Advans on carpet.

I'm using a Mtroniks Monster ESC with a KMS 380/30 motor. Two 2s lipos in series. The ESC is just zip tied to the motor. Not a good long term set up, but O.K. for a few speed runs.

RE: OFFICIAL TRAXXAS RALLY VXL THREAD!!!!!
I just won one of these Traxxas 1/16 Ken Block rally cars from a contest at a local convenience store.
Once I got home and got it opened
I didn't realize until now that it was brushed version and didn't have 2.4 radio. I was still happy because it was free but knew I would be spending money on upgrades.
I just ordered Traxxas Link 2.4GHZ radio, VXL-3M system, motor plate, gear cover, 2 WinMax 2S 2200 50c batteries, parallel connector, GTR shocks, and finally a carbon wing for the Gymkhana body. Lol, so free isn't exactly free but I'm still happy.
What other upgrades do you suggest?

If you like drifting you can run the stock tires. if you want to race it you may need different tires. They also make two different springs sets for it and that will help the handling. You may want to experiment with shock oil and gearing, because it's out of control fast with the brushless system.

I just bought 2 packs of 3S lipo...seems that there is a problem, @ full throttle, the esc seems to be very erratic...it starts changing betweeen full throttle and mid throttle...any reason for this? (Im 100% sure that the esc is at lipo mode....)
Anyone having the same problem?
Thanks!!!
