Hi Hombre, guessing your intermediate flyer or more. Completely stock set up is very easy to fly.
Max airspeed about 35 mph, very stable. It'll lift off around 14-15 mph. Keep it straight ahead, level till about 20 mph. Stall is about 17-18 mph.
Trim out is easy and quick. She'll loop easy and slow, you be amazed how well it holds when going so slow. Rolls are tough all stock, wait till droops are off.
Land it scale or just bring around on a short final and 3 point it. Just watch out not to get too slow, its decieving because it does fly well very slow.
With droops, she will drop a wing, right side usually, but recovers very quickly and not too much alt is lost. With out droops, she just drops the nose, gains speed, recovers, drops nose,.....
Gear are well forward, so she tracks well & hard to nose over on the ground.

Jorgy, thanks. I'm intermediate-plus level.  Figuring the owner didn't balance it right and it was tail heavy. I was just surprised that flaps down was the standard setup. I'm going to raise flaps when I test it again for my buddy. He admitted to me (later) that he didn't balance it at 4.5 inches. I'm going to double check it for him when I get my hands on it again. Hes already got it repaired. I appreciate the info!

no pablum m8.
They did that to keep the speed down & lift up when coupled w/ the droops, the 3 blade is a 10x4 also help ease the throttle management/speed, so you end up w/ slow or just a little faster than slow
You could take the droops off also. Just tape holding them on. Easy to put back with a strip of scotch tape.

When he's ready, knock out the 2oz flywheel on the propshaft, rebalance and stick an 11x7 on her.

funny you should ask about my big p-51 Glenn
I stopped building it because I refused to use the original bryrofoam wings. I just sat there scratching my head for over a year. Then it dawned on my that top flites big p-51 wing is almost the same. So when I went to order it, Tower was out of stock and that was last year. Well, I don't know if it was fate, intuition, or what, but I got an email from tower hobbies today saying that it was in stock! Weird I know. So, I am going to order it and put it on the byron. I heard it is lighter than the foam wing also. So, in a nutshell, I think I may get this bird in the air or at least finished by this fall! It has been a 5 year process!!

Another year , wow summer is here and we actually got an early start on flying this year.
I've been flying P-51 MK 1 alot so far this year , all training gear is off and I added a tuned pipe to the EVO engine , runs great and she's actually gotten a bit faster , I know I should knock off thet weighted collar but I'm not sure I want to add stick on weights ( I don't like the way they look ,)
My problem really is >>> I got a guy in the club who wants to buy either my P-51 or the ARF P-51 MK 1 that I have still NIB .
I know every plane comes with an experation date but I've really grown attached to this plane and if I sell the ARF , I'll have no spare parts ,if the unthinkable happens LOL
BUT maybe its time to move on to other things >> what to do? what to do ?

I'm not sure if I remember this right BUT Going over the plane VERY LIGHTLY with VERY fine steel wool might give you the "effect" you want .
I have never tried it so test it on a spare piece or an inconspicuous spot first -
Let me know if it works like you want it too I got a couple of old war birds that might look good with a "weathered" Look

Tom

PS I'm surprised nobody else has chimed in on this one :-)

I don't think that would be enough to do it. The best you would do with this, is remove the shine a bit.

You could buff it like that to let paint adhere, then paint over it with a gray primer followed by metallic paint, then buff the wear areas.

Scale birds often use paint over metallic covering or small metallic inserts that are buffed out a bit after painting, to make it look like the paint has worn through metal.

If you want to see what i was referring to check out the yellow tail on page 10 of this thread. I was going for something like that. 600 grit sand paper (somewhat damp) is a good way to take the "shine" off of it, for that raw metal effect. The only info i can find on the web is weathering and panel lines for plastic models not flying models.

build a big bonfire and fly through the smoke a couple of hundred times. Then try to land on a flat roof a bunch of times, put snow skiis on it, and then floats and fly it off the water. After 5 years of doing this, and if your plane is still alive it is perfectly naturally weathered although it may need to be rebuilt lol!! There are a few guys on this thread that can vouch for that huh?
With all kidding aside, your plane should look great after you do some scale weathering on it. Good luck!

HAHA! good times...that may take a while though! I saw a thread saying to sand it, take regular store bought black chalk, scrape it with a razor brush it on in the right spots and spray flat clear over it. Still doesnt explain panel lines and rivets but its one step closer

Okay for reasons (medical) that I won't get into, I've been forced to re-learn how to fly my RC models. I've started with my foamies and now have one of the MK II PTS (red tail) Mustangs as the next step and I'm wondering about the CG setting. The newer ones say 3 3/4" in the manual and that has required some lead on the nose. I converted the thing to an 1100mah A123 since it came with a dead and unrecoverable NiMH and it may be a bit lighter than what it had, but I've got three ounces on the nose and it just barely brings the thing into the back of the acceptible 3 1/2" to 4" range.

Anybody got some input on whether or not these things are coming out tailheavy or suggestions for where the CG 'oughta be based on experience?

Thanks guys.

Mine came right on the money. I relocated the battery to the servo tray area since i like mine to be evened out. Most people like their warbirds a little on the nose heavy side though. It comes in ,with flaps down, like a kite. Just floats nice and level.<input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"></input><input jscode="leoInternalChangeDone()" onclick="if(typeof(jsCall)=='function'){jsCall();}else{setT imeout('jsCall()',500);}" id="jsProxy" type="hidden"/>

I'm looking for a fuselage for mine if anyone has one laying around. Mine got stepped on and the tail crushed when someone jumped out of my bed and forgot it was there, LOL
