Bob,
I had the Robart gear on my 1/4 Cub and they performed very well. They use O-rings for the suspension and you can purchase extra ones at the local hardware store. The gear will soften a rough landing.
The mounting on these is alot different from the supplied gear and you need to adjust the mounting blocks in the fuse accordingly.
Hope this helps!!

Thought I would document the covering of the rudder, since it was too windy to fly today... Because of the tight curves involved, it requires you to be patient and make small gentle pulls with the iron following right behind going several times around the perimiter of the rudder. You can see how much I drew it around on one side before I trimmed it off. You can also see how I trimmed it by removing the tang of the single edge razor which allowed the razor to sit flush with the surface of the rudder. It wasn't hard just be patient and work slowly. The iron was set at 240 degrees for the first pass, the final pass was around 280 degrees.

Looks nice there VJ. Golly, now I'm starting to lean back toward the Solartex. After all, this is my first build, I don't want something too hard.

Looks good VJ,
I just came home from flying. I visited a local club that I am thinking about joining. I flew the Cub but there was a bit too much of a crosswind for me to want to fly the DRI. They had a nice 650ft grass strip with another 2,000 ft of runoff onto a full size airstrip. I think I can manage ot get a plane down in that distance. The guys at the club seemed very nice.
Later!!

Joining a club is good for you. It will make you want to fly more if you enjoy the company of people that share the same interest as you do.Sounds like they have a nice set-up.What's the name of the club?I could't fly here the wind was gusting pretty badly. Goodluck on your new club!

I agree, clubs are really great! I've found a lot of help flying there. The only thing is it would be really nice to live closer; a 50 minute drive one way is a bit discouraging with the price of gas now. My wife is already commuting a good 90 minutes a day and right now she's not getting paid for it. She's doing her externship to become a medical assistant. Once she starts working though... oh yeah, I'll be able to afford this hobby!!!
Back to the covering, gosh guys, I appreciate all the advice and all, but I think I've got to go with the Solartex. I don't want my first big build to be too difficult. Perhaps on the next one.
Take care,
David

Last of the covering - horizontal stabilizer. Since the covering had to follow the contour of the fuselage side (which is slightly curved) I had a bit of difficulty getting an acceptable cut/fit. This is how I solved the problem. I took some 1/4" 3m blue vinyl striping tape and with the covering up against the fuse side I simply had the tape follow the contour of the fuselage sticking to the covering. I then brought it over to the cutting board and secured the fabric/tape to the board and cut it with a razor. The tape acted as a edge that I could easily follow with great results!
I couldn't resist putting the wing on top to get a feel of what it is becoming. I am very happy with the results thus far. Now I have to wait for the pinked tape to arrive so I can rib stitch....Can painting be that far away?

Painting is not far off. The rib tape goes quicker than you would think. Rib stitching will go quick too, if you plan to add them. It's worth the extra effort.

The blocks can still be setup for Robart but will require you to do some cutting and grinding out pockets on the inside of the cabin area. I did this on a Sig 1/4 scale cub and then sheeted then covered the inside of the cabin in fabric to cover the holes I made. I did not do any cutting or grinding to the out side of the fus.

Yeah hurry up and wait
I just finished doing a little maintenance to my 1/3 Cub in preperation for the Bluegrass Fly-In Saturday. Maybe I can get Cubman on the sticks for a while.
Enjoy the downtime as you will be busy when all the stuff arrives.

VJ, what influenced your choice in rib stitching. I'm pretty sure PinkIt has the stitching done with Solartex. Just curious.
Take care,
David

Thanks a lot SDP. Red and white paint. I am going to go with the traditional starburst pattern on the wing and tail but I am going to do something different on the fuse. Still working out the details...

David,
Pink-It has the tapes but does not have the stitching. You need to put down the stitches then apply the tape over the stitches. The link that VJ posted is also the source I use for my stitches.

David, I chose Pink-it tapefor a few reasons, one being that the tape is made out of Solartex, the same covering that's on my Cub.The pinkshad a more scale look than other options. I am also usingthe rib tapeto hide a few seams that are on the fuse as well.

Take a little breather and relax, Vincent. Your gonna need the rest to get prepared for all the excitement in painting. I finally finished mine yesterday and now it's my time to rest.
