WOW, I asked a question about converting my C47 almost 2 years ago! I read your review and even though its too late for me I would like to see some pictures of your model. I finally settled on OS Engines and my model is still around and looks great.

I've had this model for some time. I'm finally starting on it. I'm going to use two DLE 20's and Lado gear. Here are some pictures of mounting the engines. They are too long for the cowling. I have to cut out an opening in the firewall for the carbs. I made a prototype firewall out of plastic to make sure that everything would fit. I didn't want to cut anything prematurely.

Both engines installed and the gear works. I built a plywood ring to internally mount the cowlings. No screws on the outside. There is a You Tube video on this model with twin 20 gas motors on it.

I've reached a major milestone. The wing is complete. The four flap servos, two aileron servos, two engine servos and the two Twin Sync magnetic pick-ups are installed and operational. I ended up changing the main gear a little. The main gear strut is attached to the actuator with two 4-40 screws that are threaded into the struts about .125". This bolt presses on a .25" steel shaft that has a small counter sink hole in it. I stripped two of the 4 bolts, trying to get things tighten up with no slop. I ended up cutting a slot and squeezing the strut to the .25" axle using a bolt and nut. Now it is solid as a rock. I can get you a picture or drawing if anyone is interested. I have attached a few pics.

I'm building my DC-3 as a gun ship. I had Zotz decals make a few sets of decals in the correct sizes for this plane. They normally make them in 1/48th scale. I have a few sets extra, if anyone is interested.

Robbie9859901, I am also thinking of buying one of these planes. Are you using the ESM landing gear and I would like to see your mods on the landing gear if possible.I would also like for you to let me know when the maiden will be and if possible take a video. I want to see how scale it flies with the twin twenty's as far as full speed and cruise flying. I flew this plane as an engineer in Danang, Vietnam in 72&73.I was in a squadron called 362 Tews. Tews standing for tactical electronic warfare search.I love these old Gooney Birds.
Thanks, Steve Mullis

Robbie, I've been working on mine for quite a while now. Off & on for a little over a year. Work keeps me busy. Anyway I'm also doing mine as an AC-47. Here's a few pic's of mine. I was a flt. engineer on one in Nam 67-68

I'm using the ESM gear with the electric Lado retrac servos. No air. I hope this picture shows up well. You can see where the stock set screws go to hold the gear leg to the shaft. I cut a slot in the gear leg and drilled a hole to put in the bolt as shown. The gear leg is now solid on the actuating shaft. I'm sure that the .20's will be too much at full throttle, but that is what throttles are for. Scale takeoff and cruising will be at reduced throttle.

I'm balancing my ESM DC-3 and I'm glad to get the proper 25% or 4" from leading edge. Only one question, My Giant scale balancer seems to set the plane on it inverted better than rightside up. Which way did you guys balance your planes?
Thanks to all in this thread for the info!

Pirate Kevin, Hello, Being a model builder for over 45 years, you always balance a low wing plane inverted. If the wing is below the horizional center line of the fuse always balance the plane inverted. Also balance the plane with the gear retracted. Steve Mullis

Ditto what Steve said. When you get it balanced please let me know how much weight..if any, you needed in the nose. I've heard it takes a LOT in the nose for proper balance. Thanks Mike

Thanks for the info. I'll have to re balance it, I did it with the gear down. I didnt weigh the bird shot but it's has to be 1 3/4 to 2 pounds
I'll rebalance and weigh how much it is. I put the CG right at 25% which is right at 4 inches

The weight you needed sounds about right for this bird. It needs quite a bit from what I've found in a cuople of other threads on RCU. If you haven't found them. here's a link to them. Not too much more info but every little bit helps.

Hi everyone,
I'm building one of these also, Mine was a DELTA being converted to a WW2 C47, going slow but I need to have it done in time for Ames Iowa multifly Sept. 8th & 9th. I'm done painting and I'm now assembling. It shouldn't take to much longer. Hey AncientCityFlyer how's it going? I got to thank you for your help, I noticed on your bird that you cut one of the doors out. I cut both doors out had a hell of a time getting them to fit back in and they still don't fit perfect. I plan on dropping paratroopers but I'll see how thing balance out. I'll try to take some pictures and get them on here.
Bill

I'm installing the retracts now and they seem too long. The plane seem's too high, dose anybody know what the distance is between the ground and the bottom of the wing on a real DC3?

As I recall ( long time ago) it seems the distance from the tip of the prop blade pointing straight down to the ground was about 42". Can't swear by it though. Mike

It does sit a little higher than scale but not much I can do about it for now. I looked into elec. retracts through Ladro ( I think) and it would be about $500.00 for a pair.

I got my lado retracts here: http://www.lado-tech.net/en/content/6-dealers
I believe that they were about $250 for the pair. There are pictures in the previous posts.

I am about to start a DC3 build.
Was planning on fitting OS91fs for power, but now thinking
about using NGH GT17 two-stroke Petrol Model Aircraft Engines.
They are pumped and I can use smaller tanks, with 13x8 props.
