My top 22 rules of RC
I took a few minutes and wrote down the top 22 most important rules I see in all of RC. Here they are:
1. Obey the rules
2. This is the best hobby there is.
-There is no need to explain this rule. You just live your life by it. If you don’t agree, then somebody else needs your vehicles more than you do.
3. When racing, always hold your line.
-if you swerve randomly from line to line, or take out another vehicle, whether intentional or not, you should be beaten. There are beginner classes for a reason. FOR BEGINNERS.
4. When racing, never yell at marshals.
-You were the one who flipped, got stuck, or screwed up in some other way, not him. If he doesn’t see your vehicle, eventually he will. Deal with it.
5. Always run with your body ON.
-Unless you are testing something (very momentarily), a properly fitting body MUST be securely clipped to the vehicle. Failure to meet this requirement will result in driver being labeled “lazy-douche”.
6. Support your LHS.
-The only time it’s OK to buy online is when the LHS doesn’t have what you need….ever….and they won’t order it for you; or if you don’t have an LHS. Under no circumstances should you EVER go to the LHS to “see it up close” before you order it online. If you order parts online, the worst thing you can do is bring them to the LHS to have them installed. If you do this, you may as well tattoo “unclean” across your forehead.
7. Clean your vehicles.
-Grease on your work truck may be a sign that you are very manly. A greasy RC car says “I love being single.”
8. It never gets easier, you just become faster.
9. Nobody believes that you are sponsored by Monster Energy Drink.
-Don’t get me wrong, theme bodies have their place. But call it that. You are not sponsored.
10. Don’t be a jackass.
-But if you have no choice, be one that makes people laugh. We’re all one big dysfunctional family out here.
11. When out in public with your vehicles, wear clean clothes.
-Usually this is self-explanatory. If you look like a hobo, you give the RC community a bad name. Clean it up a little!
12. Body clips don’t come with zip ties.
-If you must, use clip retainers. But NOT zip ties.
13. Functioning headlights will never be cool
– ever.
14. It’s OK to run your vehicles.
-Though some will say you need to spend all of your time assembling and disassembling, know that it’s OK to plug a battery pack in from time to time. You know…..just to keep things fresh.
15. Don’t refer to people as “noobs.”
-Admit it, you make rookie mistakes from time to time. Refer to rule #9.
16. Be self-sufficient.
-google is your friend. RCU is here, yes, but sometimes you can get an answer without creating seventy six new threads.
17. Short course trucks MUST have short course wheels and tires.
-persons who choose other wheel/tire combinations on a SC truck are subject to public flogging. The same is true for all other categories.
18. If you run your vehicle in a public location, the public will approach you and ask you questions.
-Respond to those questions. Your cooperation with this rule has the ability to create a new enthusiast, or turn them away forever due to your douche-bagetry.
19. Refer back to rule number 6.
-It’s THAT important.
20. If your neighbors don’t like the sound of nitro, it’s not “their problem.”
-It’s a two-way street, try to meet them halfway.
21. What vehicle you buy is YOUR CHOICE.
-making the RC community choose for you, and then blaming them when you don’t like what they chose for you - - that’s a crappy move. If you’re having a really hard time choosing between two vehicles, play eany-meany-miny-mo. You’ll be happy and unsatisfied at the same time no matter what you choose.
22. Enjoy the world’s best hobby.
That's my 22. Have any to add?

about number 5... i'm too broke at the moment to afford a body on my MT... so... am i still a lazy douche or a broke douche?a
i can think of a couple- avoid gobs of nasty electrical tape, use shrink tube.
DO NOT twist your wires together and wrap it in tape! not only is it ugly, your just begging for a run-away.
don't put on stickers of brands you don't use, its just tacky.
dont't use over the counter multi-use spray paint, someone is going to think your not right

RE: My top 22 rules of RC
i have a good hobby shop by me, so i can trust them, they usually match tower prices so usually buying online does not save you much, only Tax.
however, most my cars are either discontinued and not main stream, so parts usually are ordered elsewhere.
I have been to shops where they will rob you with a smile on their face, don't blindly believe everyone at your shop, if the shop sucks and its the only one around, buy online, let em' go out of business and maybe a new owner will take the wheel.
oh yes and- no matter where you buy one, when you buy a traxxas, you ARE getting ripped off.

#21 should be listed twice haha
Oh and btw, chances are your LHS owners are fellow enthusiasts. That business? It's theirs. Not supporting them, at least in the U.S., well, refer back to a couple other rules.

If a marshal isn't doing his job, I'm going to yell at him. He took it upon himself to volunteer, he better be on his feet. We have a marshal at my local track who is probably the laziest person ever.

What burns me is the guy who drove the last heat and now he's required to marshall the next race, but he shows no enthusiasm and stands in the middle of the field on his phone. When your car goes nuts up, he finally lazily walks over to it after about 15 seconds of not realizing you're in trouble. I like when some random kid shows up and wants to be part of the RC action so we tell him, "go help flip all the crashed cars and put them back on the track." It makes their day and they will actually sprint over to a crashed car!

RE: My top 22 rules of RC
number 12 is a bit off, body clips are an arse to get off when they fit properly and zip ties and fuel tube make it so much easier. and clip retainers have never worked for me, if one falls out it normally just gets caught under a tire and then rips the whole lot off... zip ties are where its at for me [&:]

I love it when they throw your car on the wrong part of the trap, so you instantly go like half a lap down.

#10 should be in there like, three times...
for the guy who walks up when youre in your pit and gives you advice on how you should be set up...
for the guy who says "i dont need to practice anymore"
for the guy who keeps the gift certificate from the last win in his wallet to "prove he won"
and what about when your LHS sells kits for more than online and when you ask about price matching they say "go buy it online then"

RE: My top 22 rules of RC
I was sitting here thinking about the most sarcastic things I could think of and came up with this list. It's meant to be fun. If you can't laugh at yourself.....then that's no fun. The LHS stuff is obviously situational. I've lived in areas with awesome hobby shops, and places where my only option is a crappy hole in the wall where the guy is a tool. But my main point is that going to the LHS to see it up close, ask the worker/owner a bunch of questions, then buy it online is a total slap in the face.

RE: My top 22 rules of RC
I' surely a inexperienced racer, but no 3 makes no sense to me. So you are supposed to follow the same line you did on the last lap? So if there is a fastest "line" that everyone is running and you are first, the guy in 2nd should just slow down and stay behind you instead of going around? If he goes around you and "the line" isnt he breaking rule 3 for the guy behind him? I know when I was involved in full scale racing in my youth if someones nose was behind the back of your door the track was yours and the rest was his problem? I know the poster on the wall at the local RC track says "It is your responsibility to pass someone, not their responsibility to move over and let you by" What am I missing? Oh yeah...I WISH there was a beginner class, I'd be running it,lol Todd

I'll be honest I mainly buy online for 2 reasons 1 no tax, and 2 the distance.
Lets see I can order a part online, get it cheaper, and be sure I'm going to get it while paying $2-3 shipping OR I can go drive 20 miles away to my LHS (the closer one doesn't stock anything outside RPM arms for a stampede for ground based, and they charge 5X more than anywhere else) pay $8 in gas, pay 10-15% more than ebay listings, pay tax on top, and have a 95% chance to have to drive back out there in 3-5 days seeing more than likely unless its my pede or savage that broke they won't have the part in stock...
So to get a $10 shipped part off ebay it would cost me around $28 after you figure in gas(for 2 trips seeing most my RC's are not popular ones), tax, and their markup. Now if I'm going to be near it like I was Friday I stop in and buy a few things like I got some paint, and few supplies I've been needing.
Now if its a part I need to fit(like a body, or arm off another model), or look at things that MIGHT work I will usually go there, and buy what I need instead of ordering blind on the net.
As for not trusting the one I go to mainly is pretty good they will tell you if a RC is crap or not even if they stock it. Hell one worker there got me to buy my Jammin X1x even though they didn't carry it, and told me where to get the CNC parts for it cheap off the internet
Now the other hobby shop trusting them is completely retarded. I trusted them when I 1st started with a nitro(which also was my 1st hobby grade RC). If I listened to them without double checking what they said I would have royally trashed my engine. Hell Traxxas topfuel was the best nitro fuel on made to them.... They also sell the same exact bearings for $4.50 that the other LHS I go to sells for $1.50 each (seriously they are the same exact one)
EDIT: fixed one line

RE: My top 22 rules of RC
Number one rule in life and RC.
Don't be a hater.
There's plenty of room in the hobby for monster truck bashers, truggy racers and RTR noobs (I'm more of the former and the latter) as well as nitro and electric enthusiasts. Hell I've come across people who think the whole hobby is a joke as is anyone involved so why should we hate on each other with in the hobby. Just my 2 cents. Oh and Shark I have been ripped off 3 times now, make that 4 times when I finish my latest project.

kenny.... It almost seems like you LIKE getting taken
If you have the money thats fine, but i try to prevent young kids blow all their money on a car that is bested by something 1/3 cheaper.
I was one of those kids that got ripped off, but back then a bandit was only $120... and it was still a joke.

The beauty of the RC hobby (IMO) is that is has many facets and thus can be enjoyed by people of all types and all walks of life. Some of like wrenching more than driving. Others hate working on them and only want to drive.
Some of us spend all our RC time racing....while others purely bash.
Some like MTs, other SCTs, or buggies. And then theres those who love nitros...and those who wont touch them.
And of course there are the scale vehicles....for those who prefer looks over insane performance.
The massive array of RC's models means there is something to enjoy for most anyone.
Thus, its hard to come up with any 1 set of rules for the hobby!!!

RE: My top 22 rules of RC
Nice thread. The cheekiness is subtle. I always like when people make their own lists and see who agrees/disagrees and why. I know practically nothing about the hobby even though I've had pretty much 1 of everything - toys, buggies, monster trucks, nitro, electric, etc. I've never been close to tracks or shops until recently, so I've always been on my own to bash around my property but I'm trying to find my way into the hobby. Good rules, even if they don't all apply to everything (they never do).

You like what you like, that's not a problem with me, the whole world can use more R/c enthusiasts
