Hello Don
Managed to get a flight in last night, flew pretty nice, in between clouds and some wind.
I hope to be out again Sunday morning.

Got three good flights in on the tripe today.
Couple attempts with the take off. I find that wind is your friend and once you add power keeping it on helps with ground control.
Landings were good, one out of the three today did nose over due to letting off on the elevator.
Pictures and a video to follow.

Craig.

Congrats. I saw your plane last year at WBOD. You called for me when I flew my green tripe. I crashed mine at the WBOTR now I need another one. See, they are not too bad to fly. I loved mine. Looking forward to the pics.

Second video, after a few attempts, dealing with power/ torque took off and flew around.
Screwed the landing, have to remember to keep the elevator locked after touchdown to prevent nosing over.
Nothing worse than another engine idling in the back ground, errrrr, lol
Thanks for the videos Brad

Hi Craig
Really enjoyed the photos and video of the Dr.1, I really have to make an effort to catch up to you some time and see it fly.
Cheers Don

Your video was a pleasure to watch. Just goes to show how well engineered this kit really is. Fly’s like full scale minus the rotary engine torque effects and looks great. I’ve have had many dr1 kits that extend the firewall or cowl out and use an oversized rudder. You know in the past many people say the more scale the more difficult to fly. Well this kit proves that all wrong. FYI I told you about the longer the run out on landing the more prone to ground tip. If I had a grass field like yours I would be flying every day. A good strong head winds helps landing. One other thing. If you go dead stick you better have altitude because the glide ratio of this plane is like a piano.

What is the specified C.G. point of the Glen Torrance 1/3 Scale DR-1?

I searched the thread and did not find it, nor on the GT site. I did not see ability to DL and view the Manual.

I don't believe Glenn has his manuels on line. You'll have to contact him if you want one.

Why can't we down load pictures after a certain point in this build-along? I study them all to help me with my Fokker project.

I am another one who was so enthralled with Deljons build I ordered a kit from Glenn. I actually started building my gtm 1/3 scale DR1 back in January 2009. By September I decide to take a short break from it.

Nearly 4 yrs later I decided to restart ( August 2013). I am amazed to now find myself close to finished, weather permitting maiden flight next month . Will try and post a picture shortly. It feels really weird not to have tons of things still to do !

Make sure you land it on grass. Weight and engine, size prop? Elevator is sensitive. Rudder is a delight...you can turn with rudder and feed opposite aileron to keep level its amazing. BTW if your not used to rudder have someone else fly it.

Have a zenoah 74cc twin, not weighed it yet but around 35lbs. Prop, got to find it, put it somewhere 'safe' 4 yrs ago. Think it's 24x10.
i'm well into rudder so no worries

Another fuzzy pic. It's going to be the Jacobs black colour scheme, not the fire/smoke puffing devil but the plain one with white cross on fuse. Partly because it's easier to do, partly because I,v had a 1/4 scale dr1 in the puffing devil, partly I think simple is actually more impressive, just my opinion

Sorry for the question, But I was looking for a 1/3 scale Balsa USA tripe build to do a fun step by step/side by side compare of the two kits. I thought you folks might know of one. I have my eye on this bird and just thought it might by cool to look at them both at the same time. Not to see if one was better than the other. But just to see how they differ.. Any thoughts?

Omg there is no comparison between a GTM and balsa usa kit. None what's so ever! GTM is like building a scaled down replica. Balsa usa in my opinion is like building a scaled up Guillows model.

I dont want to start a hissing match and I whole heartedly agree that there is very little similarity betweem A GTM and A BUSA kit in any scale and I have built both, but to compare a BUSA kit to a Gullows kit is wrong on every level. BUSA kits are as good as you can get for "sport" scale, they are well cut and designed and the materials are of excellent quality, Gullows, well, not so much. Dave Johnson had a hand in putting the BUSA prototype for the 1/3 Dr-1 together and I believe the outline is fairly correct. Dave will let me know if I'm wrong.lol
