Electric powered airframes just don't make it when it comes to audio quality.

That's why I only fly 4-strokes.

Lately I have been selecting an engine for it's sound & then researching a plane to fly it in.

Imay convert mine to electric when I put the floats on but only if Iwant to fly off a particular lake in the area. No fuel motors of any kind allowed. There's other lakes though. Ido love my DLE. Flew for a straight 35minutes having a ball.

35 min is amazing! There are companies that sell sound systems with a single speaker ties into the throttle movement. They sound amazingly real!
Based on Bobs report another 6 oz wouldnt matter to this plane......

My wheel springs are SUPER tight! i cant imagine them streching out too fast.......Those springs and the dubro 6 inch inflatables should provide a good cushion.
I also increased the tail wheel to a 2 inch one. MUCH better scale and performance combined witht he 6 inch fronts.

Made a rail system to glide the battery tray in and out. Making a custom strap for the lipos using a snap and magnets under the front seat.
Velcro sucks after awhile and i get all that black fuzz all over.

I also needed to get some cub yellow paint as the inside and around the windows looks like garbage.....
Like the fact that its easy to get my hands in and around the plane.....

I habe an almost identical setup as Bob with the exception of lipo packs. My 10s setup uses 2 high power 5s5000 45-90c nanotechs.
Im praying that im not over 80 amps using the 18x10. the 19x10 is a bit large for my power setup and if the math is correct, the 18x10 is almost exacty
1/4 scale from the full size : )

Bob, how is the back of your battery tray held down?? Im going to do the same thumb screws for the front like you but are you sliding the tray under a ledge of sorts in the back??

Yes the tray slides under a ledge...go back to page 50 and you can see how it works...the platform is glued in place...makes battery changes a snap ....I've done this on a few of my planes and my Christen Eagle came with the same type setup...works great!

My power numbers are 66 amps and 2600 watts. Plane is a porky 18.5 pounds. Makes for 140 watts per pound. Not too shabby. 2 questions. 1. Can I shorten these LONG nylon wing bolts??? And 2, my cg is a bit nose heavy. If I add 28g of tail weight I'm right on the 4.5 mark. Without it I'm at 4 1/8 to 4 1/4. How are you all with the cg? Plane is BIG! Biggest hurdle is moving it around to avoid hangar rash......

Thought I'd update you cub lovers on my conversion. This is my H9 previously on a 26cc gasser with a gemini hanging off the front. I've converted it to ignition and plan (eventually) on converting it to gas. It swings a 17-6 @ 8300 on 5% nitro and idles slow enough to read the prop manufacturer! Housed entirely inside a Dave Patrick super cub cowel. Home grown mufflers get the sticky stuff out of the engine compartment too.

Just use these...screw the stud into the wing with a little thread lock and these will make life so much easier....I use them on ALL my planes?

The bolts that came with my PNP version are only about 1 inch long (25mm). they are plenty long enough. you want to make sure at least 5 or 6 threads protrude when they are tight so in case they get loose they don't come come out too quickly.

I did a stupid thing once ( ok, i've done a lot of stupid things ) I was talking with people while assembling my plane at a float fly a couple years ago and I forgot to put in one of the wing bolts. I put a flight in on the plane and it was great! then I looked at my table and noticed a wing bolt. UGH! I then put it in and flew three more great flights off the water that day.

The wing was held on by the wing strut and did not even separate from the fuselage at all. Of course that first flight I did not do any loops or rolls just a few water touch and go's.

Lucky me

How long did you make the threads extend??? Don't tell me as long as the stock bolts.......

I believe I explained that the bolt are 1 inch long. or if you are cutting some longer ones to the correct length then measure the thicknesses of the fuse and the wing and cut the bolt about 5 or 6 threads longer than that thickness.

sorry if I did not make that clear .

oh I probably need to mention that you must add together the two thicknesses of the wing and fuse at the location where the bolt hole is and cut the bolt at least that measurement plus another 1/4 inch

Ok......first off my wing bolts are 2.5 inches!!! lol No wonder i have carple tunnel syndrom!
Cut them back to 1 inch and i still have 1/4 inch past the inside nut.....

Thanks all! Tomorrows the maiden! Hope it flies as good as it looks!
Hey one last thing, how slow can you get for landing? Dont want to tip stall on approach : (

With the 106" wingspan it will float for a long ways. On my maiden I had a dead stick at about 300' altitude because of idle set too low and had a 3200' runway. I flew it south dead stick for about 1/8th of a mile and turned around to line up on the runway with about 100' altitude and it finally touched down about 1/8th mile north which is over a quarter of a mile dead stick. It is a floater guaranted....

Heres the maiden! handles like a dream......tiny bit of pull to the left on lift off but I guess thats expected.......
6 inch tires not only make the look but make the landings smooth as silk! I can now keep the stock springs.....
almost 19 pounds but flies much lighter. my guess is that it will easily handle a 10mph wind.....

Nice job with the maiden! I like the area where you are flying...very nice. I just brought my cub kit home from work today to start assembly. I pulled alot of good info off of this thread, Thanks to all who contributed.

Hidaven, I thought I could keep the stock landing gear springs also. I used robart gear on my previous 100" J-3 w/o-rings. I had a deadstick on my new J-3 and set it down a little harder than I wanted and bounced a couple of feet back into the air. This bounce was on the right gear. It stretched the chinese spring 1/2 " and ruined it. I tried to find a replacement spring at the hardware store but with no luck. I converted it over to the 4/40 bolt/o-ring style as mentioned earlier in this forum and it works awesome as I am used to. If you bounce it just ever so much to hard, the china spring is done as you will find out. I have attached some pic's of how another flyer in this forum did his. I did mine similarly, only used shorter bolts. I then re-installed the factory bungee covers.

Congrats on your maiden, it looked awesome!!! I'll bet you are happy now. Did it float as I had stated above? Mine weighs 16 1/2 #'s so yours is a little heavier because of the electric's.

Does anyone have a picture of how they have their throttle linkage ran and servo mounted with the DLE-30 ??

Didn't float much at all.....probably the extra 2 pounds......I'll keep the o rings in mind if the springs stretch . Great plane
