gotcha. I have to order the exhaust and prop today sometime. Also have you set up your radio yet. the flaps were a pita. I spent 3 hours working on them last night. But finally got them set right and they move correctly.

While a bit removed from my main point behind this thread, my new 56" Yak54 arrives either today "WOOHOO" - Got it as I needed a low wing tail dragger to get comfortable on before flying the stang - well that and it'll suit my .61 2stroke from my old busted trainer perfectly (the one that got squashed by a book shelf on the Dec 23rd earthquake)!

Good for you kiwibob72,
You are going to love the yak, They fly so nice,
You may not want to fly the stang after flying the Yak LOL.
They are two different birds and fly much different than one another, you will find the yak to fly light on the sticks were as the stang is going to be heavy as we no and will need to be muscled a bit more.
I have not made much progress on my Stang but I am looking forward to getting back to it, I have to many projects going at once and cant seem to get focused on getting one done, I have been spending to much time on all instead of concentrating on getting one completed.
Any way it sounds like you guys are making good progress, and I have been enjoying the thread, keep up the good work.
Happy flying.

Thanks Madness ..... I really wanted something that I could get actual stick time on that didn't cost much (just in case), and that I could grow with with the flick of a switch - and that I could dump all the old running gear off my old trainer into!
Aside from thin CA for the hinges and the receiver that I'll order tonight (for delivery after Easter), I have everything needed on this build here already, and after quickly looking over it all, there isn't all that much to do in fairness ...... well ..... compared to the Mustang there isn't a lot to do!!
PS - as for progress, works keeping me busy lately, that said, I have an oath to myself to get the motor 100% sorted this weekend, the yak will take priority aside from that.
As for flying, the (electric) Yak55 1.3mtr on my Phoenix sim flies really nice once I adjusted the weight and power output to what I expect mine to be, it tracks great, but really slams things when you really use the sticks - great balance really!

RE: Hangar 9 .60 P-51 with DLE20.
yea i have a 27% extra 260 from hangar 9 that i built as my 3rd plane and its so fun to fly. just have to watch the nose overs somtimes. Its no to bad. But i love that plane with a dle 55cc it flys awesome at half stick. It will do more than i can ever do right now. But its so fun.
As for the P-51 im getting there. I got the engine mounted and all the electronics mounted except the throttle servo. I had some servos lying around but no hardware for mounting so i just ordered a new one.
Im working on hindging the radiator scoop. I have it hinidged but trying to figure out how to mount the servo. Might beable to start it this weekend. No flying as no cowl installed website has the pitts muffler on backorder ohwell no biggie

Chaos - there is a video on "tinkermanrc"'s youtube account where he mentions how he did his radiator with the servo, perhaps looking that up will help (it was a video going over his post build result I think)

Re -raiator venthinge,
Some place back in this thread I posted some pics of how I did mine, If you are interested. I just used one large ca hinge and my slot machine, it worked out great, the servo was a bit of a pain but with some patience installed down below the dowel pinholes behindwingscoop.
Good luck

Just a couple of hard wood blocks, I mounted the servo on the blocks and then glued it in after as oneassembly. (cant get the screws in otherwise)
Then just glue or epoxy control horn to the inside hinge line of the vent,I had to put a substantial offset in the push rod but it seems to work fine.
I like the idea of using a micro servo for this aplication, If I had one kicking around I would have used it.

kiwibob,
Hurry up and get finished as you will love it. Mine is done out electric on 8s lipo and flies like a warbird should. No mixing when flaps deployed and yes you can bring it in long and slow with a little power on full flap. CG is middle of the range suggested but aileron is 60 0/0 of recomended. No idea of weight as I never weigh any of my models.
Ian.

Your not going to believe this, but I managed to snap a tendon on my finger trying to de-ice the car last week, so while I'm back in my home, the house hold is mostly still in boxes, we still have painting touch ups to get done, and to top it all off, I find 'fiddly' things hard to do with a big old plastic splint on my right index finger - and I have 3 months to get accustomed to that! [:@]
Still ..... what do you do? (least I THINK I can still fly my Yak54 and Heli in the mean time - find out Sunday if I'm right or not, other hand fingers crossed )

What did your come in at weight wise Ian? .... I'm starting to try to look at my baby getting through what I can with this confounded finger, just having a little fun finding all my required tools being as the interior painters are to only be finished this Friday, and half our stuff is still in boxes as a result.
In fairness though, I'm only aiming for a early summer maiden flight (your winter), as I have not been able to fly a lot as required, and being kinda new to planes, due to work, family etc, I still need to spend more time on my Yak before I want to trust myself with the Mustang as I have not had the airtime to a point where I'm comfortable.
PS, the Yak with the throws at 30% and with 25% expo is an utter kitty cat, it really hides the monster that lives under the control of my dual rate switch quite well!

Eleven months and no maiden yet? Get to it. Your missing out I have the DLE-20 in a Sig P-51b and it's a blast. Below is a link to the video of my maiden flight if that sort of thing motivates you...

I hear ya .... despite the dud finger causing me issues I am getting around to working on her slowly again. Got the motor 100% where I want it last night in relation to being centered, as she was 2mm off to one side. Once happy there, I started on doing the holes for the pitts exhaust as well.
This is where it got annoying, as being as my locally obtained pitts is NOT a Jtec, it's looking like it might be a little fat around the side. I might have to open the cowl where the side of the muffler goes, which I am NOT happy about - I was hoping I could enclose it all other than exit pipes and spark plug lead.
I'm fighting doing this at this point as I have noticed that the spinner (and thus motor) can come back about 1.5-2mm, and I'm going to see if moving it back a little will help with the in-cowl issue by moving the whole assembly back towards the fatter part of the cowl. I hoping I'll get the few mm's clearance I need, as if not, it's ugly bit out the side, or I get the welders at work to trim and re-weld the fat part of the exhaust away.
I will need to open up the bulk head a little around the carb bolts and choke butterfly, but that said it will prevent the motor touching the bulk head and introducing hard vibration onto the air frame beyond the mount points themselves.
Re taking 11 months, in my defense I only had access to my plane in January, as while we brought it in August last year, it was still a birthday present. So it's really only been about 6 months now, and for the last two we have been living out of boxes etc while the earthquake damage is repaired on my home. Does not mean I don't want her finished. I just need to finish learning to fly my other planes to a point where I'll be happy to fly (and land) her first - heli guy here!.
Now that my wife's not working Saturdays anymore, I have more time open to me to spend up at the club since we don't have to condense an entire weekend into one day (WOO-HOO!!!!!!)

OK Kiwibob,
I put the finishing touches on her today and ran up the motor, Spinning a 16x8 APC prop.
The C.G. is set at 4.5
The all up wate came in at 10 lb 10 oz
Maiden will be tomorrow
Wish me luck

I do not have any currant pics, but if you go back in this thread you will find some that I posted, and hopefully some useful ideas.
Good luck with your build, Lets see how mine flys and then I will be happy to answer any questions you may have, or update some pics for you.
Best Regards,
