I bought this Edge 540 68'' (60 - 90) went to purchase the evolution 1.00 and its discontinued... well i bought an RCGF 20cc 2.2lbs Gas engine and want to install it. I wrote an email for advice to horizone hobby on what i should do to install as in cutting a hole in the firewall for the carb to move the cg's back a little. They said ''We do not advise you to install the Gas Engine'' no explanation as to why. Now can anybody tell me why i cant install this engine? Can I cut hole to fit the carb in behind the firewall? Iam used to spad's and am new to balsa....I can really use some expert advise right now.

welcome, here is what I think. I think they are thinking that if you have to modify the firewall to install the engine, you are on your own and they will not be held liable for damage incurred by you doing so.
My advise is to go and install it, as I have, but do not cut into the firewall to mount the motor unless you have to. Gas engines produce alot of vibration, and you do not want to reduce the strength of the firewall in a plane that was not originally designed for it. Instead, move the batteries, gas tank, and anything else to change CG. Then spend time beefing up the motor box with some wood glue and maybe pinning the box too. If you do cut it, glue in some support around the inside of the box around the cut hole.
If this is your first gasser, read this page, it will help you set up the plane.

also, I have been flying mine for 2 months on gas, so I would be happy to answer your questions.

Having stripped the airframe down, I can say that it is likely due to weight. The nose of the plane, really from the landing gear forward is not build to support the weight of a gas engine. I am in the process of putting a 26GX on one and you can see what I did to strengthen a rebuild the firewall is this and the following posts: [link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9383266]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=9383266[/link]
Also, if you are used to spads, this airframe, with a gas engine is going to be a real handful for you. It will be in the 30+ oz/sqft wing loading range and will not be a forgiving floater.

I have this plane with an OS 91FX.....
I want to install the new DLE 20.....
I am very excited about the idea... I feel the OS 91FX is underpowered for this plane but I still like it, the DLE 20CC should be comparable with an Saito 125!
what do you guys think?????

Get a larger 4S or go electric. You could probably get in around 9 lbs and you could do it on 6S only (though 8S would be better, but more expensive).
Good luck!

there is no reason you can't do this...look through the threads and you'll see that its been done.
There is a guy at my field that put a gas engine is his and it flies nice, no 3D bird but seemed to track well, do knife edges, aileron rolls beautifully. The only issue is the weight.
as to going electric on this...6S will be fine, just need to have the right ESC/motor/battery combo. I'd look at going for a 2KW setup for this plane... Actually there are a couple people that have done it here...look through the thread, you'll see it.

RE: Seagull Edge 540 - 68
Hello....
but why 1/2lbs to 1lb in weight????
The os 91fx that I am using is about 20oz (or more with muffler) and the DLE 20cc is suppose to be only 29oz.
I must say that I put some weight in the nose of my plane and it still flies very good.... I guess that it shouldn't be that bad then?????
I am using the standard fuel tank that came with the kit..... would I have to change the fuel tank as well by another of more/less capacity????
thanks...

Go with which plane you like better. Both are great planes that will serve you well but each plane has its own flying characteristics. The wings, for example, the edge 540 wing is a straight leading edge...the entire wing flies at once. On the Extra you have a tapered leading edge...the inner wing area flies first.
If you're referring to the Seagull Extra 260, I believe that's a 180 size plane about 13lbs. They have a .75 one that is about 7lbs but I believe that engine is too large.
Just looked at Horizon Hobbies- they carry the extra 260...better call Seagull to see if you can still get parts for this. Yes, your engine will work here. I don't know if it will be good for 3D on the extra as it's slightly heaver than the Edge.

I am unfamiliar with the concept that "the inner wing area flies first".

Hi guys,
After doing a lot of reading here I thought it was time to sign up. Great thread
I have a dilemma I'm hoping you guys can help me with. I'm building a Seagull Edge 540 60 size (68" span) for 3D flight but can't decide on what engine to run.
Short list is:
Saito FA-125a
OS 120FS pumped
OS 120FS non pumped
ASP 120FS
ASP 180FS
The Saito I know is the lightest with best power to weight (but also most expensive). Also, the lightweight may require additional weight on the nose to balance the aircraft correctly?
Not sure of the difference between OS pumped and non pumped in real world use. How are they for 3D flight? Does the pumped version give good consistency in all attitudes? They are also heavier than the Saito which could be of concern.
The ASP's are well priced but how suitable are they for 3D? How good is the throttle response? Do I go with the 120 or 180 (180 has same footprint of 120 but there is a weight penalty of 100g or so).
I welcome your thoughts.
Thanks
Pete

On this smaller airframe (all mentioned engines are over-sized). I did have the minor on-going problem of vibration. I think the current ARF now has extra plywood up front behind the firewall that might resolve that. It was really no big deal, but did require checking stuff after every couple of flights. Muffler did like to come lose, but that might have been me being a newbie. With the Saitos, it's good to check and adjust valve clearance after recommended hours.
Edit: I did install larger rubber wheels and metal spinner so that might have helped with weight distribution. I don't usually might weight if item provides a benefit.
Never owned a OS 4-stoke, but I love their .46-.75 2-Stroke Ball-Bearing (fx-ax) engines ... very durable and dependable.

Just finished building it - my review: my second or third Seagull ARF, this Edge was the worst yet. The hardware was terrible - the worst of any ARF of all I've built. Off-center stamped washers, rolled metal threads, soft rods, lousy, really crummy, badly-molded plastic, too-small gear legs, etc. I sure hope I don't land too hard because it is impossible to reach the blind nuts for the main gear.
OTOH, the plane itself was overbuilt and well-covered, just as expected. So, if one already has the hardware, one can build a great plane I knew from past experience that it would be very tail-heavy so I used a Webra Speed 120 (pumped) engine, CF main gear and pants from a similar Phoenix Edge, and a 2S LiFe tied to the only tray. Weight came in at 9#.
I will edit this with a report about the maiden after I get the engine dialed in.

Hi all.. Been lurking and reading a while..Just registered and have a question for you guys.
Just bought a used seagull edge 540. 60..
mine does not have the tail struts like I am seeing on some of the pics here...
Do I have a early version?...Is it critical that I install a set?
Thanks
