Default ESM P51b Engine Help

I picked up a ESM P51b last night in a trade, and here is my problem. I know the DLE 30 and the PTE36 are amazing engines for this plane. But I really love the sound of the 4 stoke saito enignes. I have a CAP 231 with a 150 on it and love the sound of that thing.

I try to get out every week and fly but that normally doesnt happen so I would really love to get 5-8 flights on this plane a month.

So would a 180 be an ok option on this plane? or is a 150 enough to really fly this plane well? Or should I just make the jump to gas and get a pte36 or a dle30?

Personally I would switch to a gas engine.You will spend less than $4.00 per gallon and it has agreat sound. Now as to wich engine and we sell DLE,DLA,PTE and JC EVO. The PTE is a rear exhaust engine 36CC so it can fit in very tight cowls.

Personally, I dislike gas engines. They smell bad. Sometimes they are rather difficult to get started no matter what brand of motor.

For glow...yes a saito 150 would be enough. I flew the 80" stuka with a 150 and it was more then enough. I have a 180 in my first esm me-109e. Nice combo.
Even a saito 125 would fly the p-51b, but yoyd be happier with the 150.

I have the esm p-51b, but put an electric power 110 in it.

hi, cant give you any info about a 4 stroke, but I can about the model.
first off the book CofG is WRONG, set it at a MAX of 130mm back from the centre join of the wing, 120 would be even better. that is where I have mine.
I have the ESM P-51B model, with an RCG26 in it, in hindsight I wish I had put the DLE 30 in, but it flies well with the 26, this model looks great in the air and on the ground, there are a lot of D models around, but not that many B models.
the other thing is beef up the undercarriage mounts, then tilt them forward as far as you can, have the back mount almost level with the wing, it will improve ground handling a LOT. the balsa on the L/E where the wing locating pins glue in was very soft on mine, they came loose, with the balsa still stuck to them, I put longer dowels in and made up brackets to hold them in place.

the book control throws for elevators are also out of dream land, ailerons are reasonable, but be careful of the elevators, I think I have about 10mm up.

Thanks for all the comments, I was watching a youtube video from TBM doing a demo of this plane with a saito 125 and it flew great. So now i wonder if i even need a saito 150 at all.

its a War Bird, they need a bit of grunt, go for the 150, the 180 would be even better, you will need the weight up front.

I would go with the 180 you know you would like the extra power.

The bigger the motor, the bigger the prop you can use for closer to scale.....but...also the more fuel you'll use. The 150 is much better on fuel then the 180 and can still spin a decent size prop. I have a 150 in a CMP Corsair with a 16x8 3 blade prop. Tank size is 18oz, but even after 10 mins, it hasnt even used half a tank. On the other hand, my ESM me109e with the 180 and same prop, it uses up 3/4 worth of the tank and can fly 9 mins....same size fuel tank.

The 125 is fine, but, its gonna be somewhat marginal on the p-51b. It'll fly, but it wont be a lot fun. I had a 125 in my Kyosho 71" Spitfire and it flew great...plane weighed 11 pounds. I took it out to use in a TF 60 size P-51 and put a 91 in the spitfire...and now it flies, but cant even do a loop without diving first. So...the esm p-51b will come out weighing 14 pounds or more......the 125 wont be optimal...better suited for an 11 pound TF 60 p-51

Plus the saito 125, 150, 180 are all almost the same price. I think im going to see how a 150 would work on it. I could always get a 180 down the road.

Hey Kyle, Its Cory. Also, keep in mind the clear coat over the paint is a light polyurethane. It may not be very nitro-proof. It will strip that paint right off.

I could always spray the plane with some over coating, that should help. I just dont wanna run gas im just not a fan. Maybe someday, however I do like the sound of a G62 and up. Flying weedwacker isnt my style.

I have a question for people using Nito engines. How is the finish holding up to the Nito fuel?
