I don't have any information on the Maloney 100, but I did have the 125, and it was grossly underpowered. It would turn a zinger 16X6 at about 6800 RPM and would lose power quickly under any load. I tried it in a Pica Waco with marginal success. The engine would start easily (with an electric starter), but could not be hand started. The carb adjustments were: High speed starting point 1 1/2 turns out, and low speed 1 1/2 turns out. As memory serves, the engine did not require very much fiddling with the carb tto get it to run. If it had been a fairly powerful engine, it would not have failed as miserably as it did. I think it would make a better conversation piece than using it to fly a model.

Kaintuck:
If you are just getting back into R/C, then any engine is, by far, better than the Maloney 100. It rates right up there with the old GHQ from the forties. I sold one from my shop to a local customer, and I never saw such a pitiful running engine - that is when you could get it started. At the time I had six engines in stock - so I gladly gave him his money back, and I sold all six engines at auction for considerably less than what I had paid for them.
Go get yourself a G-26 or equivalent, and be happy about returning to this hobby.

I LIKE the maloney.....it ran my old spook perfect....cheap, quiet, and enough "old time" power! no nose weight required, and looked neat up in the cowl......

Well, I am surprised. You have to be the first person I ever came in contact with that actually likes the Maloney 100 engine. Sorta proves the old saying: "One man's junk is another man's treasure". Good Luck on the new Maloney and Spook build. Keep us informed as to how it all turns out.

One of the guys had a Maloney 125 in a Robin at the field. Absolutely would not hand start. Did finaly start with an electric starter, and
was easy to run and tune, but lacked any serious power. The Robin did look and fly nice with the rather tame Maloney.
The fact that it would not hand start was a huge deterrent in how often it flew.
Enjoy your Spook, Very graceful looking plane.

RE: Spook 96
I have 2 Maloney engines, one 100 converted to diesel and other is an 125 stock, both are getting dust.
Tried both on a 90 size GP Piper, did fly it but no more.
The instructions say nothing important.

I have had a Maloney 125 since I bought it new around 1988. I flew it in a Balsa USA Citabria pro with some sucess in several Scale Masters Qualifiers, and lots of local events in California and Arizona, back then. It was and is a wonderful engine. One has to realize that for its time, it was quite unique, as small gas engines were not plentiful. It was designed to be started with a starter, not by hand. I think it takes about 800 rpm to get the magneto to fire. I know that the 100 was underpowered, but the 125 had plenty of poop. My 125 used to glitch my old 72 mg equipment, had to keep the receiver and wiring back away from the magneto and spark plug. Probably 2.4 will be OK, but I would still keep things seperated as much as possible. Most complaints with were for the 100, low power, but then alot of people have "0" abilities with ANY engine! Where do you put the spark plug! Does this engine need oil?, and other assorted drivel. I hear it all the time at the field. I think a 15/6 prop will be good for your 100, should fly the dog out of a 8.5lb airplane. Good luck, Kaintuck!
