That is a good looking exhaust system, but I'm with you, the price of some of these products put them out of reach for many of us[&o] Leroy

Most of my customers are epoxy bonding the Spychalla cowl to the firewall and then taking the engine in and out of the assembly through the lower hatch. This allows for the seam to be filled and not visible. It makes for a much better looking nose on the Mustang. Regarding the Keleo, I would wager that it would not fit my cowl recess pockets. The pockets are as close to scale location as possible and consideration for a muffler has not been made. Personally I am for keeping engine cool and running the exhaust out the bottom and not holding heat up in the cowling where there is no air flow. Check out these photos of cowls with filled seams.

I haven't gotten that far in my build, I wasn't aware that you could mount the engine through the lower hatch, I had assumed that you mounted the cowl after you mounted the engine, I plan to fill in the seam as well, which is why I bought your cowl, and I have to agree with you on the exhaust heat issue, do you know off hand if you can mount the Revo52 engine through the Lower Hatch?

Yes you can install the Revo 52 from through the lower hatch I do it with mine no problems also a fellow builder uses this engine and does not have any issues with removing or installing the engine through the hatch on Leo's cowl. we are both using a stock pipe from Revo slight modification to the width is needed it is a can style Pitts exhaust.
here is a couple of pictures, hope this helps.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Hi Guys,
I just finished a TF P-51 I picked up from a friend. It was an RTC that was glassed and partly primed. It had the Spychalla cowl blended in. Looks great, but I was worried I wouldn't be able to replace the chin if anything happened. I did some searches and nothing came up. Leo, are they still being made? I'm running a DLE-55. Tight fit. The JTEC muffler designed for the Aeroworks P-51 just barely fits with nothing hanging out. It hasn't flown yet, but Saturday looks to be the big day. I'd feel a lot better if I knew I could get another chin if it got dinged, or came loose during flight.

I'm running a 23x10 Xoar WWII prop. It turns around 6,800 if I remember correctly. Motor is brand-spanking new. Idles great.
That's the first I've heard about your Warbird event in Austin. Maybe our two clubs should communicate a little more. We are hosting Warbirds Over Texas next weekend.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Well guys, mine is ready to go. Test flight (if I don't chicken out) is this afternoon after work.
US Engines 41cc with a zinger 18-8 prop. Turning up 7000 rpm. Balance is slightly nose down
at the CG marks. Lateral balance is good.
Every thing that vibrated loose or got blown off during the engine tests is secure.
Wish there had been room in the truck for the Corsair and the P-51. Would have flown big blue
first to chase off the butterflies. Palms sweating just a little bit. Six hours to go.

For those guys running the REVO52 and the Spychalla Cowl; where are you mounting your Ignition Module, when I got my Spychalla Cowl; Leo, had built a mount on the inside top of the Cowl, so the Module basically hangs from the top of the Cowl above the bottom aspect of the Crankcase of the engine.

Mike,
I'm sure it will be fine. Reliable engine, cg is correct, control surfaces moving in the right directions and
amounts (I'll have an independent set of eyes verify that, just to be sure).
I just got to remember to take a breath every now and again during the flight.
Pictures, sure. a full report to follow.

Tracey; are you also cutting some holes through your firewall to allow some venting through the fuselage like Karl did?

Doug,
I don't have the big holes that Karl has and i don't think they are needed, although i do have a large hole behind the Carb and two holes for fuel lines and i matched the linkage hole for throttle and choke same shape and size as the mounting plate.
if you look at the pictures i posted you can see the additional balsa build up that was added to the back of the cowl, it worked out that the engine was mounted with stock mount plate and no standoffs were needed in my case.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
The maiden flight is complete.
6:30 pm EDT at the MVRCC field in Lebanon, Oh. 85 degrees wind was light (5 mph or less) cross wind from the west.
no clouds CAVU.
What a great first flight! She tracked the runway center line with very little rudder input. Tail came up at about 50 ft of
take off run and lifted off well before the end of our runway (350 ft paved). Took about 8 clicks of down elevator trim
to get hands off flight. No other trim changes needed.
The US 41 had plenty of power, but I think I'm going to change props from a 18-8 to a 18-10 or a 18-12.
The landing was a piece of cake, reduced power on the down wind, cut it further on the base, kept the nose down on
the turn to final and let her sink. She crossed the end of the runway at about 5 ft, started feeding in some up elevator
and pulled the throttle to idle, touched down on the first 1/4 of the runway for a tail low wheel landing.
I think I'll keep it.
No pictures dangit. My camera eats batteries and today was no exception. But one of the guys got some video on his
phone. If it is worth posting I'll do it.
