Default What happens if timing is off?

What would be the impact on performance if timing is too low (say, 20 degrees) or too high (like 35 degrees). At what point does it start to matter?

To low and the engine acceleration suffers. To fast and the engine will surge or miss at WOT or may hole a pistion.

i replaced a hall sensor on an engine when i didnt know any better... i didnt check the timing...... the engine backfired on me and gave me a good whack.... i learned how to check the timing and it was about 35 or so... i set it about 27-28 and problem solved

Either way will make the engine run hot and can cause other damage.

At 10° late from 28° you will just loose some power. A lively engine becomes a lame duck. It will however run very well. EGT will be up, CHT will be lower.
At 10° early the engine will be subject to extreme loads, will run hot, show detonation, and will accept tune less. Piston failure is a real possibility, unless the compression ratio is real low.

Thanks, very helpful. On my ZDZ 210 I was 3 degrees or so too advanced. I notices 100rpm pick up and smoother running (still not set up totally right). I think I'm now close enough

timing depends on your muffler system. If using high resistance pitts mufflers you may gain some rpm using earlier timing.
Using canisters or tuned pipes, the timing should be a few degrees later.
