Default Twin Sabre Build: BVM and Trim Aircraft

Hi,

I'm about to start construction on two Sabre projects side by side. One is a BVM AFS Sabre (60") and the other is the Trim Air Sabre. I tried to sell the Trim kit, but then I actually pulled it out and looked at it. The quality of this kit and it's components is simply superb, so I'm keeping and building it. Both kits are out of production, so I don't know how much interest the builds will be to the readership here. Anyone want to see a thread on them?

I would be interested in seeing both of these kits..... how long has it been since we have see a real kit, let alone build one ?

Thanks for doing this...

I have just got flying a very old BVM Sabre kit. I'd be interested in seeing a thread on the AFS version. - John.

I know, I wanted to buy it off you but you changed your mind before I could get my mitts on it! I wanted it to replace my original Trim Sabre which is 8 years old and going as well as ever but is beginning to show its age and creak at the joints. It's an excellent model and you made the right decision, keeping it and building it. One change I would make is to stiffen the rear of the fuselage around the fin, the thin f/g flexes and allows the fin to wobble a great deal, people think the fin is loose but it is secure, it is the whole fuselage that is flexing. I don't believe it is a safety issue, my Sabre has clocked up more than 6000 miles in the air and survived the odd nasty tumble on the ground and the fin is still securely in place. My plan was to make a couple of 1/8" formers to fit in the fuz at the front and rear of the fin to stop the flexing, but you might argue that by stopping that moving the stress must appear somewhere else and might break the fuselage/fin joint. The fin is merely butt-glued to the fuselage so I made a large c/f horn that comes up out of the fuselage and goes deep into the fin to help secure it. Other people used dowels secured to a thick balsa plate inside the fuz. This video shows the fin moving by flexing the fuselage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xDvPi6mRtLg

It looks it, but seeing how much it has survived, (over 500 flights, 6,000 miles and ahem a cartwheel across a field!) the evidence is that it is not a problem. The fuz is thin f/g and the whole fuz can twist a little so the bending is shared out over a large area. It does however make me wary of using the rudder as some of the rudder force will just go to twisting the fin/fuz and I wonder if the wobbling contributes to the sometimes fishtailing/dutch roll that happens in gusty winds.

I think you'll find that all model Sabres seem to suffer from that Harry, my L39 is also a terror for that but no problem to fly around as you know.

Build away Shawn.  There's not enough build threads on here.

Is this the same BVM sabre you were talking about in the other thread? or was that an ARF? just curious

Enjoy the build, and hope you get to fly them I LOVE the ARF i'm flying on EDF... really fun plane

Jack,

This is no ARF, it's the AFS kit. Yes, same one!

I have an unused rotating nose gear retract which will fit both jets (BVM / Trim) if anyone is interested. Just send me a PM.

Thanks

Nick

How is the BVM F-86 build coming along. I too have an OLD BVM Sabre kit in the box (plans dated 1991) and I'd like to see a build thread.

This is all I could find on speed brakes on the 60" BVM Sabre.

Might help out a little.
