Here are some Hartman Zeus pictures. The three fuselages in the first photo are the Zeus Mk. IV which was designed to use the Quik Fli II wing. The center fuselage is a Zeus Taurus which features raised engine mounts for an inverted installation. This one was designed for the Sweeper which was published in MAN. The top fuselage is the Mk. III which somewhat resembles the King Altair. The Zeus Interceptor was designed for the deBolt design. Each fuselage has a label with the date of manufacture. As you can see, Dwight installed some support structure, engine mounts and a firewall while there is nothing in the mystery fuselage.

The fuselage belongs to a very old pattern design called the VIPER. It was produced I believe by Hartmann but never really achieved any popularity in the magazines. There is actually a picture in MAN of this plane being hand launched. I will see if I can't give you the dates and scan in the advertisement.

Sorry Dan, it's not a Viper. The Viper was produced by Glaskraft, the designer was Mack Beauchamp around 1964, much earlier than this fuselage. The Viper featured a stabilator. The mystery fuselage has a conventional stabilizer that is mounted higher than the Viper.

Hi,

At least the "mystery" fuselage seems to fit rather good to a Phoenix 1 wing. See my simple Photoshop image below.

Still no definitive answer? Still seems to be of the Phoenix family but somebody out there has to know for sure.

I am 99 % sure it's a Taurus. A few were made of fibre glass by skyglass or maybe it was fliteglass. But by that time the Taurus had lost it luster because of the more modern pattern planes. I had several Taurus' back in early 70s. You can tell by the swept vertical stab and the long nose from the wing leading edge to the spinner. The wing was swept, but not as much as the P1.

This picture was taken in June of 1967. Don Lowe was flying it and I believe it is a fiberglass fuse, although I can't prove it, it sure looks like it could be. The filets and rounded lower aft fuselage look that way. What do you guys think?

I lean towards the body profile being a Taurus with thinner wing. Can someone photo-shop it like they did for the P-1?
