SR, you've unknowingly talked me into doing this thing, this is a 1997 C&H SynchroSpark I borrowed from my Merco .61 Petrol engine. I marked TDC on the High Compression Saito 1.50 and marked the end of the Rare Earth magnet that triggers a spark, the other end doesn't.

Well that worked! I adjusted the low idle, it was to lean. I riched up and it started. A BIG thank you for everyone's help.

Thank yourradial1951for the impressive tip, I will have to that in my ever growing bag of tricks. (only been flying 2 years)

I would like to pose another question:

will I damage anything if i cut a small hole into the left side of the fuse just behind the firewall? (A hole just big enough to run the throttle cable through)

I'm not sure what you're asking. It's been common practice for as long as I can remember to run the throttle rod/cable through the firewall and the only way you can do that is to drill a hole. When you drill, make sure there's nothing behind or in front that will be damaged if you happen to get too close or go too far with the drill. It would be a good idea to remove the fuel tank and engine, if installed.
If this didn't answer your question, maybe a picture will help us understand what you're asking.

I was hoping that w8ye would jump in here, it is sadi that the OS-f, the Saito SS and the YS four stroke plug are all the same, as for proof I have none.

You can feel safe drilling thru firewalls on most models. Some ARFs skip on wood, but they should all take a hole for throttle cables.

Dave - I always felt the SS was a little hotter than the F. I also used both in 2 strokes where the heat ranges are more pronounced.

Jim once gave me a couple of the older Tower plugs. He had a card and they were old looking. I later bought some new ones and I would bet they were colder.

Ah, I see now. I used an EZ connector on my throttle lever to prevent binding against the firewall and mount. It works fine as long as you put some blue thread lock on the grub screw.

Why doesn't Horizon sell Saito SS plugs?

Use teflon tape on the muffler / manifold threads or high temp pipe thread compound with teflon in it. The latter can be found at most hardware stores but not all.

Because the last time I looked at AdvantageHobby they were ridiculously expensive. I did buy a "card" of ten SS plugs a couple of years ago with my R325 when they were on for a super special sale price as was the engine at the time.

BTW the Saito SS and the OS-F plugs are physically very different in almost every dimension and their appearance, even the copper gasket is a slightly different size... hard to believe that OS would supply such a vital item to their main competitor. Who knows...? When the original plug needs replacing, I guess most would go for the F plug anyway. They sure work well.

The question of OS supplying a competitor may be moot. They could buy them from a supplier with their own logo and P/N and the identical or closely similar specs used by another engine manufacturer.

As with any machine assembled from lots of bits not all are made in house. In some cases none are and the name on the building simply denotes an assembly center.

fly boy 2, there are lots of ways of rigging throttle cables. A pic was posted recently of my solution on the Skybolt where a bellcrank was bolted to the motor mount to shift the movement 90 degrees, (I milled a flat into the mount to anchor the bellcrank at the correct angle). This was done to work around the fact the fuel tank was directly behind the firewall and would have been in line with the throttle arm. There was also the problem of the motor recessed into the firewall to get the distance to the thrust washer to match and there was no room to have full swing of the arm recessed into one cowl mount block.

The throttle arm on the carb can be adjusted to any clock position by loosening the grub screw and tightening once where you need it. DO NOT use Loctite on anything plastic as it will cause deterioration. I also like the fact on Saitos you can flip the carb 180 on the back plate with absolutely no problem to have the throttle barrel and HS needle reversed. It took me a bit to realize this as the Skybolt was my first 4-stroke install and once the carb was set up with the HS needle facing downwards the solution came quickly.

I have experience with several fourstroke plug brands, Taipan 4c, GloDevil 4c special, Saito SS, Fox Miracle, OS-f, McCoy, as near as I can determine they are all the same performance wise. I used to keep two OS-f plugs to test now and then and they never change anything when an engines carb was set correctly. Having said that I think the F may be able to cover up poor tuning better than the others. Day in and day out I use the Fox Miracle. It lasts forever and does nothing to draw attention to it.

Ihappen to know that MERLIN plugs supplies plugs to some major OEM manufacturers, usually made to order like black bodies etc.

I used to buy the SS when they were a couple of bucks cheaper than the F. Now, they are too expensive.

I have another Satio question.

My Satio .91 will not idle correctly. I can't get the classic "pucka, pucka" low idle. The carb is closed as far as it can. It just won't idle at a descent low speed. I am swinging a three blade 14X9.

Is there a saito manual on the web I can use. Also when I adjust the low idle the engine dies.

Tower gets $8.99 + shipping for the OSF plug. Ican get them at the LHSs for that and I don't have to wait.
