Exhaust Threads Stripped
Hi,
I am working on a Magnum Pro 45.
The threads are stripped on one of the exhaust bolts holes.
Will this bother bench testing this engine to see if it is a keeper?
If I decide to keep it I see two solutions:
Drill and tap to the next size.
Drill and add a heli-coil.
Anyone know of any other solutions?
Thanks,
KW_Counter

I have done that before, test run a engine to see if it is worth fixing or not. So yeah go ahead and run it. But it may or may not idle too good with the muffler off though. But it isn't a biggie. You ought to wear hearing protection too.
Yeah the usual fix is to drill and tap for the next size up in screws. I usually alternate SAE-Metric-SAE... or Metric-SAE-Metric in the screw sizes as the SAE size is the next smallest increment in size up when you do it. Using a insert is doable too, but it depends on it you have enough metal around the old stripped out hole to do so. You could thread a brass rod and then drill and tap the hole for the rod, Then use permanent lockite to lock the rod into place, then cut the excess off and let it sit for a few days so the glue can cure really good. Then drill and tap the rod to fit the muffler screw.

Your problem got me wondering ...
Anybody convert if from a hex head machine screw to a stud that is "loctited" into muffler assembly then using split washers & nut to secure it to the case?
