I am having problems with my egde snapping to the right. It is balanced right at aeroworks recommendations. It seems it snaps too easy. Even on low rates. I found some info on page 14 but not much else was said about. Anyone else have this problem or have a fix?

The things to check first is to make sure your lateral balance is good. Then make sure both elevator's have the same throws and are moving at the same rate. As far as cg goes I think mine ended up further back than the starting point in the manual in order to get a more hands off inverted flight. Mine will snap out but only during extreme g loading when I think most planes would also. If all this is okay, might have to look at some possible incidence problems. Hope that helps. If not come back on here and someone will know what to do.

The first thing Idid check was the elevator throws. They are the same and Ieven increased the left side by 1/4" or more as it always snaps right and did so again after that adjustment. I will check lateral balance and see what Ican find.

Well I've been searching and searching. Ichecked my elevator halfs using the pieces of balsa. And were perfectly straight and same speed. I checked my lateral balance and the left wing consistently dropped, so I added a 1/2 oz. to the right wing tip. This seems backwards as my right wing is the one that drops. After flying it again it seems it has no effect on the snap to the right. Wings seem to be nice and straight. I am stumped. Should Itry moving the cg back?

I think that's what I would try at this point if I were confident there are no warps/twists and surface throws are are setup right.

Sir,
1. I would tell you that the very first thing I would do is to check your CG again. I have flown over 400 flights with mine and suggested CG from AW is pretty close to spot on. I would check it again and make sure its correct.

2. Next I would use something like carbon fiber rod to check that all the surfaces move evenly to one another. A piece of balsa is not ridgid enough to be sure. Measure the turnbuckles from ball link to ball link to determine if they are equal. Do this on both elevator and alieron.

3. Next, I would also take each surface off and check to make sure all the surfaces are not twisted and level. You can also check this with a incidence meter. If that checks out, I would insert the carbon elevator tubes and attach a incidence meter between the rod and compare it to the incidence of the wing. I doubt there would be a problem here as the planes are built on a jig.

4. I would guess you will find a problem in the first two steps before getting to step three or four.

I still can't get the snap out of this thing. I have checked cg and seems to be happiest where aeroworks recommends with the balance buddy. Also used the inverted 45 cg test and seems to be spot onl I used carbon rods to make sure my elevator surfaces are equal and traveling at the same rate. Turnbuckles are equal distances. I checked all surfaces and seem to be straight to the eye. I tried to laterally balance using the spinner and a finger on one of the tail gear screws. It always wanted to drop the right wing or snap to the right and when Ilaterally balance the left wing would drop so Iadded 14 grams to the right wing with no change in snapping to the right.

Well, Ijusted weighed my Edge and is FAT. I'm guessing my problem is wing loading. It weighs in at 12 lbs. 5 oz.!!!! Is this normal? I know the original owner fixed the main gear. But in no way does it look like he could have added a full pound or so.

I don't know if mine isas bad as yours but it also will snap out to the right in extreme g's. I never figured a way to fix it. I still have a good time with the plane. Mine also has a pretty healthy wing rock for an edge.

Yes, Istill have fun with mine also. Just scares me sometimes. I was wanting to do more with this plane. Iwas expecting more from it, being aeroworks and all. I'm wondering how much lighter it would have to be to get it to fly better and if its worth it.

I believe its just because its an edge 540. I have never had one that was not afraid to drop a wing. Mine flew great but at slow speeds or to hard a pull on the elevator and it would snap or drop a wing. Just my. 02cents worth. I know some guys swear by them but I would much rather fly an extra or a sukhoi.

I don't know where you would start on removing weight except maybe the ignition battery could come out with a good ibec. I've done it on my other planes. It already has carbon fiber gear, tubes, and spinner. If you do lighten it in another way I would sure be interested in your plans.

So I guess the snapping from an Edge 540 is something you have to live with?

Just have to be easy on the elevator and bring them in with a little speed. If you ask 100 different people you can get a 100 different answers. I like the way an edge flew just didn't like the way they landed.

I believe it is something you may have to live with certain manufacturers or model sizes of the Edge 540. Isaw an Aeroworks Edge 100cc fly this past weekend at a fun fly that was doing amazing things. And I'm thinking to myself, "why won't mine do that". I found a wing loading calculator and punched in the numbers from both my 30cc edge and the 100cc edge and sure enough, I think Ifound my answer. I believe it is in the wing loading, the 100cc has a much lighter wing loading than the 30cc. I may try to lighten it up to help with the snaps, but am wondering how much lighter it would have to be before it goes away. Idon't think this airframe was meant for 3D.

I came across the AW 30cc EDGE 540 ARF-QB after I got my 71 Slick and I keep coming back and looking at the AW Edge. I haven't finished my 71 Slick yet but wondering if the AW 30cc EDGE 540 ARF-QB would be a better "first gasser" for me since the plane is built with thinker balsa making the AW more durable? Looking at the instruction manual and hardware between the 71 Slick and the AW 30cc EDGE 540 ARF-QB....I like the AW better. Personally the throttle servo setup on the 71 Slick has been my biggest challenge. Makes me think that the AW 30cc EDGE 540 ARF-QB is more suited for intermediate builder looking for his first gasser and the 71" Slick would be the next plane. Is there anyone that has a 3DHS 71" Slick and the AW Edge that could give me some feedback on the differences between these two planes? Any advice? Thanks!

I don't have the slick but I can tell you the aw edge is a great first gasser. Great instructions and built extremely strong.

Just got my Edge today. Looks great, cant wait to start.

Question: Would Savox 1256TG servos be ok for this airframe ?

I think its definiltey more torque than needed but could I damage the airframe ?

The 1256'd will work for you and yes they sre over kill. I had 1258's on mine and it was great. You will be fine. They are a bit slower than the 1258's

Thanks, Brian

Any advice on servo arms for the Savox servos including the pull pull rudder ?

I think the servos only come with the 4 arm option.

Default RE: 30cc Edge 540 build

hey guys, this is my first gasser but i have a little problem, I live in Bogotá (2600 meters above sea level) and I was concerned about the 30cc performance at this altitude. Asked around local hobby people and said this airframe with a 30cc would not give full performance, basic aerobatics and thats it. So I decided to buy a DLE 55cc for it, hoping it would give the plane the power it needs for hover and more demanding/power aerobatics.

I know that its suicidal to full power the plane (maybe on a vertical) with that engine I rarely fly full throttle on any of my planes anyway, so thats out of the warning list.

Does anyone knows someone who has mounted a 50cc on a 30cc airframe? Should I reinforce the firewall? landing gear? Any advice at all?

Thanx for any response!!!

You can use a few choices. If you go with savox make sure you use futaba splined arms. Swb, mpi, and spot ob make great arms. I think you will need 1 1/4 for elevators and ailerons. You will need a 2 3/4 or 3 arm for the pull pullm. I used dubro heavy duty arms
