Hi Guys,
I just finished a TF P-51 I picked up from a friend. It was an RTC that was glassed and partly primed. It had the Spychalla cowl blended in. Looks great, but I was worried I wouldn't be able to replace the chin if anything happened. I did some searches and nothing came up. Leo, are they still being made? I'm running a DLE-55. Tight fit. The JTEC muffler designed for the Aeroworks P-51 just barely fits with nothing hanging out. It hasn't flown yet, but Saturday looks to be the big day. I'd feel a lot better if I knew I could get another chin if it got dinged, or came loose during flight.

I had my maiden yesterday. The plane flies great, as always, with the typical down trim. A link to the video is below, courtesy of Terry Farmer and WylieWarbirds. If you watch closely, you can see one wheel fall off early in the flight, then the other wheel just before the belly landing. Also lost one side of the Tony Howard scale exhaust !! We found one of the Robart wheels, but the other probably is at the bottom of a pond. Just another $80! She'll be good to go for Warbirds Over TX this coming weekend.
Thanks

Hello All.
If possible could someone tell me the length of the Sierra struts from the axel to the top of the strut?
Thanks, Richard.

10 inches from axle center to the top of the strut....
Of course this is adjustable and with the axle centered
with the wheel on and in the wheel well it has about 1/2 to 5/8 inch above the strut (tee) for lack of the proper technical term for that part. This is from my RTC.
Hope this helps.
Cheers

GSnut,
Thanks for the measurement, could I bother you for the diameter? I thought they were half inch, but wanted to confirm. I havnt had good luck with e-mail to Sierra, so I appreciate the help!

Richard,
The upper strut is 5/8 inch o.d.
The lower strut is 1/2 inch o.d.
Do you have your wheels yet? If not pm me as I have an extra set of 10 spoke from
Equinox RC Scale Products. ( www.mnbigbirds.com )
They have Spokes on one side and are solid on the other.. One could mount (fake) brakes easily there. IMHO..
Otherwise they are similar to AeroTech's 4 7/8" Diameter
1.50" Thickness - .250 Bronze Axel Bushing
These are not the foam ones and not diamond tread which are for the 5 1/2 and 6 inch dia sizes.
Cheers

I'm trying to replace a Robart strut 9 3/4 overall. It's a 5/8 upper but the top 5/8 has an adapter to 1/2 to fit Aerotech retracts. I have the Aerotech mains. They are for an Aerotech Mustang, maybe if I do eventually get into contact with Sierra they can fab me a strut. I do appreciate the offer for the wheels.

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Hi. I just picked up a used Mustang TF with a DLE-55. Big Doll. It has Robart air retracts. The tail wheel also. The tank is empty so both mains are out. But why is the tail wheel not out in the landing position when there is no air in the system? Will i have to land if i run out of air on the rudder? Also, i have two 22-8 WW11 props from VV. Can i fly it using this prop. Will it not fly with it or do i have to have the 22-10? Thanks

I'm building a 4 blade static prop for my 1/5 TF kit built mustang and would like to find a place to post the build, would anyone mind if I did it here? Leroy

Value Floater,
My guess on the retracts is that it would depend in what part of the cycle they were in when the air supply was depleted....
Example: as in your case when the command to retract was given the tail wheel retract air cylinder being of smaller capacity would at least unlock first and may even fully retract. Now being out of air in the mains with their larger capacity they would stay in the pior state or extended.
If you pump up the air supply and give no command the mains may either ignore (if locked yet) or retract if unlocked.
Just my guess as I have been wrong before.
Am not farmilar with the DLE 55 or its condition, so would not venture an opinion as to the size prop to use.
Good Luck with the Doll !
Cheers

Leroy,
I don't mind, although this thread is approching 3000 and is quite large.
Whatever or wherever it fits best. I'm not the OA or the Mod so have no say.
A four blade prop build may deserve a thread of it's own, say like in Giant Warbird or Scale ?
If you do just comeback here and let us know if you put it somewhere else and a link would work just fine.
It's up to you though.
I'd love to follow along with you on that.
Cheers

Well I finally got back home. I just ordered a Hitec Aurora 9 and it is sure nice to finally see. No hobby shops in the Kansas City area carry these. It's all Futaba and Spectrum. I have my cockpit finished up

RE: TF 1/5 Scale P-51 ARF Assembly (1ST MISHAP!!!)
Have a flap question. I am in the process of setting up my Mustang. I have a Futaba 10cap with a r6014 receiver. I have the flaps set fo full drop with a bit of delayed down elev. programed in when you drop the flaps. I have it set on switch c. A triple level switch. It`s either up or down. I can`t figure out how to get half flaps at the center switch position.
The question is that, how many people with this plane even use half flaps? Do you always land full flaps. I do on my other planes. Also, how much down should i program in. Does this plane nose up bad when applying flaps? Normally i just hold a little down on the stick when landing. Any advice. thanks.

I use half flap when it's windy.
As for the pitch change, I've never noticed it. As a make my approach with flaps down I'm flying the plane to the ground anyways. I never think about it.
I do have my flaps on a 3 position switch but they are timed to go down in about 5 seconds. (half second up) Maybe that is why I never noticed any pitch changes.

Others will chime in, I do not believe that the Revolution 35 will be enough to Fly this plane, most of us are using engines around 50cc, the manual illustrates using the US42cc engine, a lot of DA-50, DLE-55, Revo 52 and G62 Engines are being used.
